So here is the first tail i made before knowing there was a mers community and forum... ;)
there are some mistakes. the seams are too visible on the sides... the tail is a little short on my back, so i'm making a belt to cover my bottom... ;)
it was finished one day before i went on holliday, so i didn't had the time to make a better painting before trying it and taking video and pictures...
but i have the opportunity to try it during these holiday in mediterranean sea, and it was a pleasure... the speed is really great, and it's very comfortable... so really happy with it...

here are some pictures and video:

first belt test... sorry for the bad quality pictures, but it was just before raining... ;) so the color are bad captured
15111

So here is the new painting...

15138
15139

and i'm working on a trident spear, i need to sculpt the transluscent parts that will come on the sides and center...
the sculpt:
15114
first cast in resin
15113
inside where i will put leds to illuminate the transluscent parts
15112

I've already ordered silicon to make my new tail... i will certainly start making the scales mold next week... i project to use my old flucke as a base for the new one... and will certainly use the same dorsal fin design... ;)

updates soon... i hope... ;)

That is one awesome trident! Gorgeous. Can't wait to see how both the trident and your new tail turn out.

I love the way you made the scales all bubbly! I've never seen that before, but it's very fish-like. Well done :)

this night i started making scales for the new silicone tail:

i still have 3000 scales to glue, for a total of more than 7000... ;)

Wow! Seven thousand? What size are they?

I've started on my silicone tail, my first non-fabric tail, and have been experimenting with materials and concepts. I can't wait to see how your tail will progress, too!

Bon chance! (that does mean good luck, right?)

anceos
10-15-2013, 01:45 AM
Well it's 19/32 inch per 9/32inch... So very small... ;)
i will see your progress too... ;)
And yes Bonne chance is good luck...

woah ... you did that so fast! or maybe I just have no idea how long these things take. Well done, and can't wait to see more :)

Elles ne sont pas un peu trop larges ces écailles? Elles sont plus épaisses que celles que j'ai l'habitude de voir ici.

Aren't these scales too large? They seem thicker than those i used to see here. :thinks:

wow, i love it :)

Thanks, well the process isn't very difficult, only need some patience... and in this case it's not a lot, i needed more when i made all the little hexagons parts in 3D on my amazing spiderman suit... or when i sculpted rivets on my Nautilus submarine models... ;)

For the effect of being too big it's due to the picture i used a macro effect on my camera to xhow details, cause in fact a scale is 1,5cm/0,75 cm for a thickness of 3mm... so not big at all compare to most people who use 1inch to 1" 1/2 (2,5cm to 3,5cm)... and that's why i have so much to glue... ;)

anceos

15177

here it is... a little bit more than 7000 scales glued... now i have to mold it, to cast that with silicone...

anceos
10-17-2013, 02:50 AM
mold is done... still need some cleaning cause some resin went under the scales, but it's easy to take of... no bubbles and details are great... ;)

You must be very patient to lay out so many circles for your mold! I used about 1200 for mine and that was tedious enough for me. :)

what kind of resin did you use?

anceos
10-17-2013, 12:11 PM
I used polyurethan resin... It dryes fast, it's strong and well captures détails... ;)...

Very interesting! Was the polyurethane expensive? What kind did you use! Btw I love that blue tail!

So i took my time... but here are some updates...
flucke has been molded... and i casted the first middle part of the tail... and will make the second parts tomorow...

16227

16228

16229

16230

all will be covered with iridescent paint mixed with silicone... ;)

I like that fluke a lot- it's pretty simple, but the shape is great, it appears to be symmetrical (one of my biggest things!) and it looks very smooth. Lovely work <3

Hello,
so i took my time due to a lot of other projects i had to finish...
so here are the updates:
front silicon painting is quasi finished...
24159
24160
24161

i tried the tail this morning and it's too big, so i cut arround 12cm in the back, hope it will be enough, silicon is more strech than i anticipated. the cut will be hide by the dorsal fin...
24162

i also casted the clear blades for the trident, and as i had more resin, i casted the body of the trident in clear resin too, so i will see which one i will use... cause i want to add light in... ;)
24163

and i re-worked my latex tail, new colors and a gold belt
24164

Thank you very much mermaids... ;)
I'm waiting for the tail to dry, cause i made the painting of the flucke this morning and adding silicon where i resized it... So tomorow evening or perhaps more on thursday i will try it again to see if it fits me well, then 2cases:
1/ no repairs needed. Then only have to glued the dorsal fin and finish the painting so all will be finished before the end of the week
or 2/ some repairs to fit better then same as 1/ so all finished in a week and half... ;)

anceos
09-17-2014, 05:37 PM
so flucke's painting is done... sorry flashlight don't do justice... ;)
24265

dorsal fin has been glued... it won't be so round when wearing the tail... ;)
24264

so next work painting the dorsal fin in blue, then adding some black effect on the dorsal and side of the tail... and adding the green effect in some part... so quasi finished... ;)

it moves so realistically, do you have a monofin in the fluke or is you fluke completely silicone? also when your swimming then become stationary ( meaning you stop then start swimming again) do you tend to float to the surface? its something that im having trouble with in the water. good job :jawdrop:

anceos
12-02-2014, 10:53 AM
Hello, and thanks for your comments, i appreciate a lot...
For the fluck, i used 2 diver fins stuck together and then i put silicon between the 2 fluck parts so no air in it when finished... I don't have any problem and can stay stationnary even in the middle of the water...for that i let water come inside the tail after puting it on and the go swimming... but that process and the design of the flucke make the tail heavy out of water but really a pleasure when swimming as it's really well balance... For your problem, i suggestions to add weight where you can near the flucke or between your ankle parts... You can for exemple sew some little bag and put some lead inside... You will have to make test to know exacty how much you need... ;)

so after a long time, i returned on my trident... and thinking of a new flucke less heavy than the first one, to be abble to move it outside water... the first is perfect for underwater but outside it's a pain to stand it up... ;)

hello, i only used acrylic paint mix with the same silicon i used for making the tail... ;) and i hand-painted it as i didn't know how to use the airbrush... but i'm now in the making of my second tail, lighter than my first, and this one will be airbrushed... ;)
