View Full Version : Tail wrinkles?

Do any of y'all have to deal with wrinkles in your tail as well? My new Finfolk tail is absolutely DIVINE and I love it to bits-- but one gripe I've had is that there's a big sag-wrinkle type thing at the ankles (even when I point my toes and lie all the way down, there's a teeny mark of it) that I can't tug up no matter what I do. Also, I've got a big wrinkle-fold of silicone that folds at my hips. Finfolk told me it was inevitable, ... but I'm just wondering - what do you all do to remedy this?

Its pretty impossible to not have wrinkles at some point where we bend. You'll figure out as you go how to hold your body so they're less noticeable

How do you usually pose to remedy it, Raina? Aside from lying flat out on one's back, of course, and using Photoshop. I've seen your pictures and there's usually either just a tiny fold or no fold at all.

There really isnt. I don't post photos where the wrinkles are bad. But you can see it more so in my videos. If your tail comes up past your belly button you'll have a wrinkle there because as we bend, so does the material. My dorsal fins hide any wrinkle that used to show up behind my knees. And as for ankle wrinkles, I can get rid of them when I'm posing but they often show up again when I swim. I think most of us just post the best looking photos.
Here's a good example of a candid shot from my instagram:

I find it's worse on dry land

You can hide waist wrinkles with a belt but everything else is really just pointing your toes and figuring out the best way to hold your body so they don't show. And my tail fits like a glove most of the time unless I lose weight. If it was taken in anymore it be too tight.
Honestly, if you search hard enough you can find a photo of most professional mermaids where their tail is wrinkled at some point.

If you bend in a spot, the tail will winkle there. Just no way around it. :/ I can get my tail wrinkle free at the ankles when I'm not bending them though. To get the tail wrinkle out part of it is putting it on with water based lube and a misting of water (I use a spray bottle full of water), then when I have it on I take a towel and put it down on the place I want to pull up, and press down and pull up. The towel gives more traction to the silicone than your hands can, while still being gentle. Here's a pic with no photoshop-

Other than that, it's what Raina said about positioning your body so it's not as noticeable.
When mermaids do dry events where they have to sit up and put their fluke on a flat surface- therefore bending in both places- they tend to wear a belt or netting around their waist and put netting at the bend in their ankles to hide it. Some put things like pearls or seaweed with the netting to jazz it up. You just learn to deal and work with the wrinkles.

Thanks for the responses, Raina and Iona! I'm a little bummed that there isn't much I can do-- but I enjoyed the pretty pictures. Taha. Mermaiding is all about creating glorious, glorious illusions, oui? ... even down to the little things. Like what Raina said, about posting only the great pictures, and what Iona said about the crafty ankle hiding with netting.
Raina, your wrinkle seems less pronounced (lol, comparing wrinkles) than mine. I've a feeling it's cuz your tail is cast thinner than mine, so no surprise there! I guess I'll have to dig around for some netting. Believe it or net, netting is impossible to find in cosmopolitan Singapore, so I'll probably ask some mer-friends to ship a bit of it over.
Will also have to work on building up ankle strength. My fluke is exquisitely long, which also makes it extremely, extremely heavy (I can't lift it up like you, Raina, and you, Iona, can), which hurts my ankles when I point my toes, even. The price we all pay for beauty!

Hi Syrena!
I absolutely love your tail! I'm not surprised that you can't lift the fluke over your head though...I can barely lift mine! When it comes to wrinkles...Raina and Iona gave some great advice...it's all about how you position your body. One of the biggest issues I have is not getting my tail pulled up all the way. It's supposed to be about an inch below my belly button, and if I don't get it up all the way I get ankle wrinkles even if I'm on my back.
I did figure out that it helps if I point my toes and roll my ankles so my hees are kind if pointing in. I can do this in my tail because I have a foil monofin. It's rather painful, but it works for me!
Heres a picture to show you my ankle wrinkles...you can see that my tail is pretty low in this picture too:

PearlieMae- LOL, that is so true. Mer-fectionists, you might call us. *winks*
Jessica - Thank you! I am so in awe of your insane tail making skills. Personally, I think you look great with the waistband at that length - you have a lovely flat tum. :)

Lol, this is so true! I haven't been mermaiding for long, and I didn't notice the wrinkles at ALL in those pics. I'm pretty sure that anyone who isn't a mermaid will be too astounded with the beauty of the tail to even notice. I feel the same about bending at the knees and ankle bumps--before I joined this forum, I didn't notice either on any mermaids, ever! After I saw people talking about it, then I noticed it. I really do think its something only knowledgable merpeople think about! So no worries, Syrena--no one is going to notice the wrinkles, they'll be too astounded by your beauty!
Also, if I remember correctly, Raina once stated that she usually needs help to get her fluke over her head like in her gif. I could be wrong, but that's what I think I read... I'm pretty sure ALL silicone flukes are heavy to some degree. Also, your muscles will build up in the places you need it to with this tail. Just practice, practice, practice (aka have a blast swimming!)
