I noticed that a lot of regular posters on mer network are relatively new to the site and (have join dates listed for this year) and that a lot of people have joined since I have. I was wondering if there has been a rise in the mer community or if people just tend to sort of drift away?

Actually this happens on every forum and has always happened here. There's no one main reason. And the reasons are pretty much the same for every other forum.

Whenever I'm at events or conventions, I always end up mentioning this site to people. Mostly it's people asking me about how to make tails and such. I immediately write down the website on the back of my cards, hand it to them and tell them that there is an amazing amount of information that they can learn here at the site. I don't know if anyone has joined but any opportunity to point someone in this direction to learn more, I'm happy to point the way. ;)

I try to be not too happy about this.
It's one thing to get new members and i think it's really cool but i would rather prefer a few ACTIVE members than A LOT who don't show up after one month or two when the fascination is gone. *sighs*

I think that some new members come to the site because of the recent mermaid "fad", but I only learned about mermaiding(other than knowing about Weeki-Wachee kind of) this year after I saw an interview on tv for the mertailor. :) I guess we just have to wait for the fad to end then see who stays and who goes.

what if i told you around winter is the time people think more about mermaids. aleast to my experience. winter i always see people draw more mermaids and more videos coming up on youtube. to me its a fad that happens every year. not to mention that Disney is advertising their little mermaid DVD around this time of year. i always make my tails during winter so when the weather gets warm i'll be right up and readdy

I did sell 300 books so far and mernetwork is in it. lol but yeah this happens on every forum. Some people just are more active than others, it's always been that way

I've had an obsession with mermaids since I was young... and my husband has just learned to deal with it and actually provide input (whoa, right??)

I know I don't have many posts, but does it count that I stalked this forum for probably a year before joining?? ha!

Thats an interesting view. Winter huh? I ended up here while looking at SCUBA photos while wishing the water was warmer and clearer, so I guess I can see people longing for the sea in winter--I long to dive again. Raina is probably right about people coming and going, though. I'm not really active in any other forums and the ones I look at now and then are so huge that hundreds of people post all the time, but I can see how on any forum people come and go. I just have nothing better to do on my conference period lol! I do bet TLM release has brought some, too, but whenever I looked at Little Mermaid stuff online it never brought me here... There's too much Disney Princess stuff out there, lol.

I agree on the thing about a few people sticking around, though. I love online friends--it's such a neat way to learn about people in other places and cultures!
