So for the first few swims and a couple months my tail looked awesome! I used pearl ex paints, and holy crap it was amazing.

Winter hit and since I live in maine, I boxed up the tail for safe keeping.

I was asked to speak to a class about the tail, so I took it out of the box and was sad to find that it had faded to a pretty nasty yellow.

Does anyone know how to prevent this or is that just the flaws of latex?

That's the nature of latex, I'm afraid. I don't know if it can be prevented. :(

even silicone tails fade with repeated exposure to the elements and use. Paint in general, will always fade to a degree.

Even if the pigment is embedded in silicone during the construction of the tail, unless those pigments are high quality, archival pigments (VERY expensive), the colors will fade or shift over time. The term is "fugitive" color. Hopefully, by the time your tail has faded, you've saved enough for your next one!
