Hey Guys,
Its been awhile since I've posted, been busy buying a house and all that jazz. But a close friend of mine just had a baby and wanted me to make a tail. I had tried the silicone tail making before but didn't have the funds to finish up so I figured making a baby tail would be a little easier. Its not the best tail out there and it still needs some fine tuning but over all I'm pretty happy with it.

cuuute. Not bad for a first try! And really a baby isn't going to swim around, it doesn't need to be functional at this stage :) good for you. Congrats on the house! See you in January!

Raina, you were saying? XD
It's really cool actually - babies are born with the ability to hold their breath and actually swim. The ability to swim, however, goes away after a while if it's not cultivated and encouraged (learned about this in my developmental psychology class at SFU). Although, I don't think they would know how to master the dolphin kick and I doubt there would be too many parents willing to put their kid in a monofin haha. But here's another clip from BBC demonstrating the diving reflex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yr3jOXRU0IA
Anyways, back on topic, I think that the baby tail is absolutely adorable! The colours are so pretty, and those little pectoral fins are just perfect. :)

Haha I love that video its amazing! I did not put a monofin in it because I dont think a baby could use one ;)

a 2 year old is not a baby, they're a toddler ;) a baby can't use a monofin.

I know, I know... they can't use monofins lol. It's remarkable enough that they can swim. XD
Raina, the first video is of a toddler, yes, but did you watch the second one that I posted? There are lots of other videos too - some of newborns only a few days old. Like I said, it's a natural reflex for survival, the same as the rooting and Moro reflexes. It's really interesting stuff, you should look into it.

I didn't say a baby couldn't swim ever. I said the tail doesn't need to be fuctionable because a baby isnt going to swim around in it. There is no way an infant could swim in a mermaid tail, considering the very basis of infant swimming in their techniques wiht floating + their legs. I'm well aware of infant swimming. :p

Er, I think you misinterpreted me...

I was agreeing with you. Babies can only swim by kicking their legs, so they couldn't use a monofin. After you said "and really a baby isn't going to swim around", I was just poking fun at that statement because they can actually swim, and there was no mention of monofins. I meant it all in good fun.

Yeah I think all the links etc were coming off to me like a debate- I was just trying to point out to Hyli that it looks fine the way it is. I know babies swim. lol Also Mermaid Kariel just posted pictures and video of her toddler (I think she's 3 or 4 now?) in a home made tail with a monofin that apparently she can swim in, I haven't seen it in action though!
But either way Hyli, it blows my mind when people can make *any* tail so good on you. I hope your friend is happy and can't wait to see pics of the little one in it. Great colours too.

I just think it's so cool that infants can swim which is why I posted the links. XD
Makes you wonder... it makes me want to think that maybe our ancestors really did spend much more time in the water and were more closely related to aquatic mammals than previously thought. It might just be nonsense, but like I said, it's kind of a neat idea lol.

Thanks hyli! But I beg to differ....I've seen your silicone tops and they're just beautiful! You could make an absolutely stunning tail if you have the time to put in it!
Any chance you might talk your friend into letting you take pictures of you in tail with her baby? It would be just so cute! Even more so considering the shape of the baby fluke....it's like an angler that isn't full grown yet! :rainbow:
The tiny fins are just so cute by the way

I will certainly try to get photos. I'm not sure when I'm going to see them. I don't want to mail it because it is just so much more personal to give it in person plus I'd get to see the little one in it =]
