I think there are a number of us from dark subcultures around here. Not a ton of us. But we're here.
Personally, I've always been the dark and 'surly' type (I'm not really surly... it's something often assumed lol) - my childhood was spent reading Poe, listening to horror vintage radio shows (on cassette, of course, it was the 70s), and building insect cemeteries in our side yards. So being part of the goth subculture by the time I was 14 made sense and was the first place I found where I was totally accepted for who I was. Until then I spent my life being called weird and told I was somehow wrong for loving the things I did. I don't mind being different, but I needed to grow up enough to not care that others (who must have nothing better to do) kept pointing it out and using it to feel better about themselves. So odd.
So at this point, I've been in the darker subcultures for about 30 years.
And if there is one thing people outside the subculture don't get, it's how much it's just a part of one's life, not a 'thing you do.'
And also. We all stay out of the sun so much you can't tell how old we are. :p
Of course, I also understand how many people who would be in the subculture if they could simply don't have it around them, so don't get me wrong. Being 'a part' of the subculture isn't some kind of qualifier. It's easiest in cities where you can find events, or if you're connected online and can do things like Convergence or other big dark events.
In So Cal, there are events like Bats Day in Disneyland, the Nightmare Before event, and things like that to do for fun. Just to be around like minds if nothing else, though Bats Day has gotten kind of huge.
Hence, I'm a very dark mer type. :)

I have a child now so I can't dress as outwardly as I used to, especially since most of the families my husband works with here are way into drama so they will most likely spread rumors) but I still have some of the clothes, and I get to wear them around the house.

I'm somewhere in the Goth Genre. I don't think people really realize it at first, because I do enjoy color splashes, but the music, the general styling, the humor, the Disneyland ;) .... Yeah.

I'm of the darker persuasion as well. Somewhere between goth and cyberpunk as far as regular day style. My first tail will be something like a deep sea creature. I usually look extremely serious in public but I am really a goofball once you get to know me.

I used to be pretty goth as a teenager.
Was very much into dark creatures of the night stuff (was born in Transilvania, go figure).
I still have loads of gothic and dark medieval clothes which I only wear around Halloween nowadays xD
Other than being extremely pale and avoiding the sun (and being nocturnal for 2 weeks of the month), there's nothing much gothic about me now, but I still appreciate the style on others if it's well done.

SINically just blew my mind. :eyepop:
I've been gothy since my mom started letting me pick what clothes I got - so, whenever I hit 13, becuase before that it was all hand me downs and things she'd come home from the store with that she picked out herself. I've been described as an eclectic person, but goth and punk are definitely in the top :) I'm interested in steam and diesel punk, and cyber and raver fashion. My other big loves are Renaissance, medieval, and victorian fashion. A chuck of my clothes are also described as "hippy" clothes as well. The problem with all of these? They're so freaking expensive!! :money:
Oh, the pretties I would buy if I could! I tell you I almost lost my cool when I was about $2k in to my tail savings and was stuck there for nearly a year.. I almost splurged on massive amounts of pretty clothes! I go for bargain stuff when I can instead, or goth/punk it up with accessories. I've grown out of a lot of my good stuff I got in high school (when I was a stick). :(
I have a child now so I can't dress as outwardly as I used to, especially since my husband is in the military (most of the military families here are way into drama so if he deploys they will most likely spread rumors) but I still have some of the clothes, and I get to wear them around the house.
Thus the reason I never hang around with most other military wives, and never live on base. Ungodly amounts of pointless drama. I'm sorry you feel you have to suppress yourself :( I have plenty of friends who have children and they don't let that change who they are or how they dress. But I also understand on base drama can turn into more serious issues, becuase there's always that one who will go way over the top and drag higher ups into things -_-

Same, I'm looking at getting an angler fish tail, the one from merbellas is a fine example. And a custom trident from a speargun to do spear-fishing, as my mersona is a huntress

I have a four year old and I would never suppress who I am because it would teach her the wrong lesson. I'm teaching her to be who she is, no matter what category it might or might not fall under, and I can't teach her that if I'm not giving the example myself. But if you're in a situation where you have to modify a bit, that's not new to anyone. Heck, CorpGoths are everywhere in business and have usually had to modify to a degree.

I was a goth in junior high and high school, the only one I might add. I have a variety of different fashions and musical tastes now, although I do have a real appreciation for the darker side of life. I'd love to have a gothic tail... Not so much steampunk, although that tail in the above photo is incredibly badass... At this point I can't afford much more than the tail I have now but I'd really like to get a black Neoprene tail eventually.

Well, that's pretty defeatist. There's absolutely no reason you can't teach yourself to sew.

You could alwAys watch a tutorial on youtube or google a simple sewing technique and try it on a few small pieces of fabric and make tiny bags and pockets to practice making seams. Thats what I did as a kid to teach myself.

It really boils down to the fact that some people can sit and do something monotonous for hours, others can't. I'm in the latter group. I have bad ADHD and had extreme frustration just sewing a band patch onto a hoodie one time. I don't think I'm being defeatist, but rather just have something different going on in my head than others. I do like to do designs and sketches though, especially in Photoshop, so I'll probably end up designing my silicone tail but paying someone else to make it for me :-/

I sew and I hate it. lol I do it because I need to sometimes, and I've made some great items- corsets, cloaks, bloomers, skirts. It is nice to be able to throw something together last minute... I recently sacrificed my duvet cover to make a skirt, so I could go out. I ended up meeting my bf that night, it was sooo worth it. But yeah, I actually don't like it, and I find it monotonous and boring, and would rather be able to buy all the things I want and/or need. And as maddening as that is, I don't have adhd. That would, I imagine, make it really suck.
However... I have a dissociative disorder, and when going through a highly stressful time, I did forget how to sew in the middle of a jacket project. lol It eventually came back to me.
My sisters, however, are like divine seamstresses. They love it and have sewn for major opera and other theatre companies.
Still, it's nice to be able to make a corset... like what I'm working on now, from scraps of red velvet and a corset making kit I got years and years ago from Laughing Moon.

i used to be "goth" in high school. i'd love to have an entire closet full of victorian-inspired clothes, but unfortunately, it's super expensive.
i do, however, listen to metal, and i love dark colors :D my walls are dark purple and the whole room is dragons-and-celtic-knot themed.

Ya know, half my friends in teh subculture wear nothing but jeans and tshirts no matter the occasion. There's no dress code. Yeah, they're mostly in black jeans and tshirts, lol. But the defining characteristic seems to be an appreciation of the darker things that informs the personal aesthetic and life in general. As much as I love my Victorian and golden era fashion sensibilities, when I go to club I am in what is comfortable, so that I can dance. Usually it's a simply skirt, breathable camisole or tank top, shell and sea glass jewelry, and my Victorian boots because they've been my dancing shoes for 15 years or so.
I'm trying to distract myself. A friend of mine died this morning, quite unexpectedly. He has been in the subculture for years also, and we dated about 7 years ago. He had a wife and a daughter and a son not yet born. And this morning, his wife found him unconscious and not breathing. I'm so unfathomably sad for her. For his children. I'm sad and it's unreal, but... ah, here in So Cal, the goth scene has lost someone who many, many people loved. It's unknown how he died right now, it was so unexpected. He was only in his early 30s. RIP, Jesse.
I turn to the water to find my solace. Listening to the waves crashing.
Since we're all mers here, what are some of your favorite dark mer items out there? I decided I couldn't find what I love, so I made them. Was going to sell them on Etsy, but I couldn't afford to buy boxed to ship them in, ha. This has been a rough year, financially. But now I have some great shell, net, sea glass jewelry.
What are your favorite ways to indulge the dark mer side of you? So much of it is all sugar and light.

Hey! Gothic mermaid here! Romantigoth at heart, although I am interested in Steampunk style lateley.
Love metal music, vampires, tea, absinthe, horror novels, horror movies, cemeteries, vampires, ankhs, and most of the clichés embraced by Goth subculture. Did I mention I love vampires?
I am also a follower of Jillian Venters :)
Surly, I am so sorry for your loss.
Regarding your question, I find difficult to find "dark" items related to mermaids. If any of you guys know about this point me in the right direction, please.
As a fun fact, I do know about this video, which has dark mermaids:

omg. Your mentioning Jillian Venters made me recall her Tumblr, which had the trailer for the new Malificent movie coming out. It. Looks. Incredible!
ANYWAY. Yes, dark mer things... I've come to the conclusion that I have to make my own accessories, which is cheaper and more fulfilling, anyway. And I'm lucky to live right where I can go down to the sand at low tide and find some pretty nice shells. I find a lot of black shells of various sizes. Which is working for me. And I can check them to make sure no one is home, and if it's occupied, it goes into the tide pools and the little critter inside lives another day. One reason I don't like ordering from someone else anyway is that issue of where the shells come from, and if anyone was living there when it was harvested. There's a big problem right now with various species of sea creature being depleted because of sea shell, sea star, and sea horse collection from the wild. Problems like this are something I want no part of: Loving the Chambered Nautilus to Death (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/25/science/25nautilus.html?_r=0)
Thank you for your condolences. It's been a rough year for my circle of friends and acquaintances. We keep losing loved ones to death, and all far too soon. They still don't know why Jesse simply died one morning at age 33. And a little while later, I learned my friend Bob died, also. In the past three years, I've lost five friends, and my friends lost three others whom I didn't know. I feel grateful that so far in 2014, we haven't lost anyone else so far. I hope it stays that way. Having a comfort with or an acceptance of death, desire for the eventual to be a good death, certainly doesn't mean wanting it soon or wanting to unexpectedly have friends in their 30s dying one after the other.

My big brother used to call me the gothic-mormon-hippie-child-of-the-corn.
I have gothic influences, I suppose, and when I was in high school I did some kind of dark drawings. I'm kind of a weird one, because I love all kinds of stuff. I'll watch Queen of the Damned or Nightmare Before Christmas just as readily as I will The Holiday or Phineas and Ferb. I'm just as likely to wear a corset and heavy chains as I am a colorful sundress (half the time I wear some kind of costume, though). It depends on my mood, and where I'm going.
Vintage, New age, Hippie, sometimes country,
Victorian and Steampunk,
Medieval and Renaissance,
and especially mermaid.
I love it all. I'm eclectic.

Oh hi. I guess I'm goth, im waaaay too many things really. but I digress. I've been listening to goth music and in the goth subculture since high school I guess. I dont really dress goth anymore just because i got tired as hell of wearing black(i dress vintage 40s 50s now). haha. but I love the music, metal, industrial, ebm, death rock, goth rock new agey stuff. I used to spend a lot of time in goth clubs but I don't as much anymore. So yes, I'm goth.
Also Cthulhu plushie! I have one too! XD
As far as dark themed mermaid accessories...I dont know if my mersona would be very dark in nature. I haven't quite gotten there yet with my mersona. I have however been sort of on the look out for horror movie mermaids. I guess in relation to being goth I like the idea of spooky evil mermaids as well. heh.

^I never understand that- I do see people say it a lot. But then, I don't see goth as just what people wear, although it is clearly also a fashion category. Besides... black comes in all price ranges. ;) I think people must be referring to particular styles that fall under the goth umbrella.
Personally, I don't see Steampunk as falling under the goth umbrella- it can go there, but it's not automatically. I do see dark Victorian and dark neoVic as that, because of the Dark part. But there is a reason why most goth lists and groups have been banning the 'what is goth' question since the 90s. It has no simple answer.
I didn't start this thread- if I had, I think I'd have asked if there were any dark-subculture or dark-aesthetic mers, because it covers so much more, and so many more people. Still, don't take that wrong. I'm glad for this thread.
On FB, there is this thing people call Throwback Thursday. I posted a pic of me at 16, and I was thinking of how long it's been my subculture, the one I always came back to, no matter how many changes my life and self took. And why- because while I have *never* fit in anywhere, and always feel out of place everywhere, and I am used to that- even here, I don't feel I fit in and I don't mesh with other mers like some do- the goth subculture is the one place that I didn't feel so different. So while I never tried to fit in anywhere, and I didn't change who I was because of feeling so out of place, actually coming to a place where I don't feel like I'm sticking out like a sore thumb just feels nice now and then. I don't actually like attention. I've always accepted that if I look something out of the mainstream (something that is so common now, but when I was in my teens colorful hair got us kicked out of school, not to mention- ideas of what is mainstream have seriously changed over time) I would have to accept attention, even if I didn't like it. I love the goth subculture, and other dark aesthetic subcultural realms, for having allowed me to not feel like I'm being stared at just for wearing what I like. I needed that back then. Heck, I like it now, too.

I guess I could be called goth, although I don't wear goth style clothing as exclusively as I used to, and these days I love my bright pastels as much as I love the darker aesthetics. About five years ago I was absolutely your stereotypical goth - in fashion, music, everything. But then I started branching out more, at least with my fashion tastes. I wear lolita fashion mostly these days (hime, sweet and gothic lolita). My music taste has never changed though, I'm really into metal and I have always had a particular liking for symphonic and gothic metal.

Not sure if Id really call myself goth anymore, but I will say I own a lot more black fishnet than is typically deemed normal. That and metal, whether it be 80's metal to SlipKnoT, to Amon Amarth. I consider myself somewhat of a darker mer style, at least currently. My lifestyle and clothing is so eclectic though that it's hard to pigeonhole me into just one, or even three, categories. I wear anything from preppy to hard goth and back. Like I saw Iona post earlier, I've gone more towards a hippie sort of vibe. I'm also glad to see that I'm apparently not the only mer out here who has issues with sunlight! I evidently have a mild allergy (PLE and photo-sensitivity), but I also suffered a pretty hardcore sun stroke back in 2009 which only served to exacerbate the problem.
All-in-all I've got quite the leaning towards the macabre ;)

I am...maybe? Haha, I'm not sure I'd categorize myself as gothic per se, but I do have a lot of tattoos and I like a lot of "dark" things I guess you'd say...(I read oracle cards, I'm interested in criminal psychology, I like Poe and Lovecraft, etc etc.) My way of dress is kind of all over the place, but it definitely veers into the goth/punk/alt area a lot. My burlesque persona (when I did it) was strictly punk/goth.
I think you could at least call me "alt", which is kind of an umbrella term that "goth" is under too, right?
Bottom line: Don't worry! You're not alone!! <3

I used to dress pastel goth. I've switched to a much more ulzzang style now, but I used to love pastels. Bats and eyeballs and skeletons with pale pinks, purples, blues, greens, and one orange outfit...I still have an affection for pastel goth items and sometimes wear them, but I've sold most of my old stuff because I outgrew it and because I changed my style.

I fall somewhere under the lace umbrella that is 'goth' but I'm kinda fashion-goth if it has to be pigeon-holed. I tend to wear black as different layers with a darker, often morbid/victorian tone. For example I have a PU leather and jersey waterfall style jacket as my coat at the moment and would typically wear it with a loose chiffon shirt buttoned up to my neck, black skinny jeans and a sparrow-skull necklace and thick-soled boots. I also have a penchant for black snoods (tube scarf) <.<'
I've got lots of morbid facinations, love horror (my youtube has the video I did in 2009 for a my FMP on horror inspired photography), film noir, rock music of differing styles and levels (not into music where it's screaming with no vocal melodies as I used to sing myself), been dragged into the world of ebm by my husband and one of my best friends and I'm obsessed with tim burton.
My current tails under construction are a black velvet practise tail, a black and purple neoprene tail and even my first silicone tail I've designed (and hopefully will start at the end of the summer once I get my weight down) is black and purple and lots of spikey, angular elements a bit like a sea urchin and a little bit dark-elf.
But I also like ethereal and whimsical stuff, which I explore a lot with my photography and do work into my fashion choices sometimes. And I like theatre/musicals, electroswing, a bit of pop music, acousitc etc. I'm fairly eclectic lol Did I mention me and my husband have a family of giant, round fluffy plushies from squishable.com (the have an awesome cthulu in varying sizes btw :P) I warn you going on the site may forever ruin your life and your tail funds, so you has been warned lol But doing so would reveal why it's so funny that me and Doug are gothy people and we have all these plushies.... that we puppetier and pretend are alive and have personalities XD Yep, we're just that crazy haha

:) Ha, I totally get that. I only recently gave my daughter most of my plushies. Granted, there are microbes in there (Flesh-eating Bacteria (http://www.giantmicrobes.com/us/products/flesheating.html) and Mad Cow Disease (http://www.giantmicrobes.com/us/products/madcow.html) from giantmicrobes.com... I really want the Black Death (http://www.giantmicrobes.com/us/products/blackdeath.html) for myself, and the Water Bear (http://www.giantmicrobes.com/us/products/waterbear.html) because CUTE.), the rabbit with enormous teeth from Monty Python, and several bats and spiders... but I kept my Headless Horseman and the Sybil doll from Living Dead Dolls. :)

Steampunk mermaid is epic!
I've always been a little Goth, always will have a fondness for dark eyeliner and ripped fishnets.
As for darker mers, I find them more true to mermaid legends historically. While I love my unicorn-friendly sweet fairy-tale mermaids, the dangerous ones are just as awesome. They're water creatures, and water can be treacherous.

Melaina, you'll be pleased to know that you don't even have to stick to a category. Goth is a very do-your-own-thing subculture, free expression is completely encouraged. Use whatever you want to as a starting point and then find your own style from there. ^_^

@SINicallyTwisted : I adore your sugarskull mer outfit!
@PhaylennMurúch I suppose romantigoth would be a word to describe it :) though I wear all sorts of things, i'm a big 80's nut (neon colours don't really seem gothy lol) but still, love long dresses and lace, cameos etc...if you look closely though, you can see my 80's eye makeup hehehe
I don't get much opportunity to dress up much anymore, (work, and going to horse paddocks etc) but when given the chance I try go all out.
I do have short short skirts for going to gigs but i'm still trying to gather confidence wearing those..for someone who started out at age 16 and then two decades wearing layers of skirts and even trousers underneath..ya..short skirts are scary XD they look nice though.
my other dress; This is really heavy, lots of lace, only wore it once for this shoot, then it's been hidden away over winter so my red hair wouldn't run on it.

I don’t identity as a Goth, but I’m more of a darker, dangerous siren mer. Living in Tennessee, I’ve adapted to being a freshwater mermaid, but my mersona is from the deep sea. I’m a Scorpio, so naturally I wear a ton of black and dark colors, but I manage to wear so much dark without suspiciously appearing gothic to the public. In middle school, I once dressed as a Goth/Punk Rock girl for Halloween, sporting black and neon pink colors because I was curious of the style. I have two Victorian dresses in my closet, by the way! One is a dark red velveteen, and another is a floral satin dress with hues of purple. I usually wear them to events at a place called Historic Rugby, which was a Victorian settlement in Appalachia. They’ve got some haunted buildings! I wore the maroon dress again this Halloween for a party.
When I make my first tail (I’m tail-less at the moment), it’s going to be silver with black and blush details. Once I save up enough for my tail fund, I want to buy a Beauty and Brine silicone mermaid tail. I’m in love with the layered textures, subdued, realistic colors, and darker aesthetic.

I'm not goth but as a metalhead girl i tend to befriend goth girls easily. Also yeah know that i have my mertail i love it but it's far from dark style but still i'm more inspired from myths and legends of the past than Disney when it comes to mermaids so i'm also on the dark and dangerous mer style side in that aspect. This topic seems dead but who knows maybe you will take it back to life.

well, my mersona is definitely the dark and dangerous (and spooky) type, I have a few dark tails too, but my go-to colours in clothing (and main tail) is mostly white, silvery, or pastel.
I've always been very fascinated by "pagan" and mystic beliefs and rituals, been dabbling in Egyptology and history, but I don't think I've ever counted as "goth" (despite owning some very gothic costumes).
I only listen to classical music, and I like historical clothing much more than anything current, because back then people actually had taste and style.
Anything past the 1950s is just dreadful.
I do own a few medieval gowns (those nicely overlap with gothic and fantasy styles like elves), but my favorite period fashion-wise would be Regency.
I like it so much that I decided to wear it everywhere, not just at home.
I'm not sure what that makes me or if there is a word/subculture for that (most people seem to prefer Victorian stuff, or mix it up with modern).

Hey do any of you goth oriented mers know some good goth mermaidy song? I thinked about add a goth mer song playlist advice to the mermaid music topic here but i only know some mermaid/sea/water themed goth songs from some very well known goth bands. Here the list i had thought about : 1-Gene Loves Jezebel - Sweet Sweet Rain 2-Cocteau Twins -Lorelei 3-This Mortal Coil-Song to the Siren 4-Sister Of Mercy-Marian (ok it's not really linked but i'm feeling it mer connected somehow especially with the deep abyssal singer voice and some lyrics like "across the water, across the wave). 5-Clan of Xymox-Medusa 6-The Cult-Rain 7-Fields of The Nephilim-Blue Water 8-And Also The Trees-Mermen Of The Lea 9-And Also The Trees-When The Rains Come 10-And Also The Trees-Winter Sea 11-Inkubbus Sukkubus-Song of the siren 12-Inkubbus Sukkubus-Come To Me (Song of The Water Nymph) 13-Inkubbus Sukkubus, Three Woman And The sea 14-Inkubbus Sukkubus, Winter Rain 15-Lord Of The Lost Loreley 16-Inkubbus Sukkubus, Lost To The Sea 17-Inkubbus Sukkubbus, To The River A Life 18-Zola Jesus-Dangerous Days 19-The Horrors-Sea Within A Sea 20-The Wake-Silent Siren Are you agreeing about these songs being both "goth" and "mer" enough for this list? Do you think they may be better fitted songs for this i don't know of? Thanks.
