So I posted about this in a thread response, but wanted to start a separate thread for this topic... Amongst New Agers, the most popular belief in Metaphysics, and the common belief amongst a myriad of different Neo-Pagan groups and even psychics and mediums, is that mermaids exist as spiritual beings on a spiritual plane of a higher vibrational frequency. Some say that they're they same thing as faeries, but after doing a lot of research, it appears that the entirety of the Fae umbrella does not really include mermaids, or at least in that they don't fit into this category very well (in my opinion). The two most popular beliefs that I've come across are that mermaids came from Atlantis, Lemuria, Ys, (and some even say Pompei), when these lands, particularly Atlantis, sunk into the water - they say that some of the Atlanteans went into the sea and became mermaid/mermen beings in order to survive the loss of their continent. Many say the same thing about Lemuria. And then there's a third belief that seems to be gaining more and more popularity: the African tribe called the Dogon claim that fish-tailed people they call the Nommos (meaning, "to make one drink"), came to Earth and created bodies of water to live in, as well as teaching the Dogon people how to fish and drink water. They're described as somewhat amphibious and their origin is said to be from the star system Sirius. The Dogon are entirely off the grid and completely disconnected from the modern world, technology and media. What's interesting, is that the Dogon had already been charting and illustrating Sirius B long before it was discovered by modern scientists. Sirius B became a red giant and then shrunk down into a white dwarf. The Dogon people say that the mermaid visitors came from Sirius B to live on Earth when Sirius B became a red giant and therefore no longer inhabitable to, as they call them, the Nommos. Scientifically speaking, I just remembered something from back when I was earning my degree as physical anthropology major: scientists can't explain how 3/4 of the Earth came to be covered in water, a much greater percentage than any of the other known planets. They're also at a complete loss to explain how it has remained in liquid form for so many years when all other planets in current discovery have had their water systems freeze or evaporate. There are a couple very recent discoveries of a planet that may have water on it, so the previous statement would include all the known planets except for this new one. It's a popular belief amongst New Agers that mermaids came to this planet from Sirius and that the water distribution and the way the planet has maintained its water system is because of these mermaids. Now this is all a crazy stretch of course, but I just wanted to present some of the more popular New Age beliefs on mermaids, since I'm curious as to how people feel about them as possibly being spirit beings... Many clairvoyants claim to be able to see them, and there are also many published channelings that supposedly are communication with mermaid spirit beings through psychics. As I mentioned above, I was a physical science major so I believe that the physical mermaids in the ocean are more like aquatic apes and probably not so appealing or much like the images of our fascination. However, I also believe in spirit mermaids and I believe these are the mermaids that have the beautiful tails, beautiful voices with songs that entrance the human mind, and gorgeous, feminine bodies that have Goddess like traits of wide hips, large breasts and beautiful long hair. That's just my opinion though. I'm not sure what I think about the Sirius idea, but it is certainly uncanny that the Dogon tribe discovered Sirius B hundreds of years before any European or American scientists did... And as for Atlantis, well, I believe it existed, in my dreams, and on that note, I think we should all have spiritual dreams and fantasies because that's what sparks the divine inside of our own human spirits. I've acquired quite a collection of book on mermaids - if anyone's interested, let me know and I'll post my list. But back to the idea of spirit being mermaids... What does everyone think and feel about this concept?
