View Full Version : Mertailor Latex tail - LOVE it!

I decided a few months ago that I really wanted a 'realistic' tail. I made myself a swimable spandex one & it's lovely but as I wanted to do some serious photoshoots and also use it in several large performances coming up I wanted a 'real' tail. I considered trying to make myself one but I honestly didn't have the time to spare to experiment nor the space to do it in so I needed to purchase.

As with everything I researched as much as I could. Researching is what actually let me to this forum (well the one right before it; came over with the move). I did see the bad reviews as i read everything I could since it's a big purchase. Finally I decided that i was going to take the chance as I honestly didn't want to pay $2000+ for a tail elsewhere just yet. So i sent a few emailed to Eric asking questions and chatting about the tail; he was always very quick to reply even though I'm sure he gets a MILLION emails a day (not to mention all the FB posts he gets from people with the same questions over and over again. oi. It's not even my page and it drives me crazy!).

I placed my order on July 29th; I had hoped to be able to bring the tail with me to DragonCon which was 4 weeks away; Eric said he'd try but couldn't promise as his current turn around time was 4-6 weeks. Alas that couldn't be met (Sadly Eric's grandmother passed during this time frame & I would never fault him for time off from tails for that) but it was probably a good thing I didn't get it before Dcon; I was already over weight limit on my suitcases anyways and never even made it to the pool! :p

So on Sunday Sept 11 Eric posted a pic of my tail saying it would be arriving in Texas this week! Sure enough it arrived on Thursday (almost 6 weeks to the day since I ordered); less than an hour after I left for the airport to head to New Orleans for the weekend! *facepalm* Eric even paid extra on the shipping over what I paid (two day air) in order to try and get it to me before I left. Hubby was home though and he carefully unpacked it and snapped a quick pic for me; it looked lovely! When i got home on Sunday night after loving on Hubby and my fur-kids for a bit I ran to check it out! I was too tired to try it on as we had been stuck in the air for hours circling the airport due to a electrical storm. it looked amazing though!

When I got home from work on Monday after taking care of the pugs I immediately slipped it on. It fit great! Perfect length; I didn't want to to come up to over my belly button and it didn't! Alas when I sit up & bend at the knee the back slips a little too far down and reveals the top bit of my butt; not sure how this could have been avoided as it is the correct measurement I gave that was taken while standing. The length is great when laying flat out as i would be while swimming. A friend said this is a normal problem most Mers have though so I think I will make a hip belt or something to put on while sitting up. I'm sure it would be a little problematic while being carried as well; do not want to flash people! Any advice on that would be appreciated; I'll ping Eric about it too.

Here are a few pics my husband snapped of me last night! Forgive the after work makeup & hair; was just trying to get quick pics!

(FYI I know there is a wrinkle at the ankles in this pic; it wasn't there the first time I tried it on when I got home from work but Hubby had hurt his back shortly before this and I was just trying to get him to lay back down but he wanted to take pics. lol)

Also will note here that he said my tail was one of the very last latex tails to be made with a smooth edge fluke; I'm glad i got in under the line on that one as I LOVE the shape of this fluke!! :D

I'm planning on bringing my tail to a lake this weekend; will see if i can get better shots as well as will find out how it swims! :D Will update when I can!

So overall I love it!

I'm really happy that you're happy with the tail :)

Alas when I sit up & bend at the knee the back slips a little too far down and reveals the top bit of my butt; not sure how this could have been avoided as it is the correct measurement I gave that was taken while standing.
I had that same issue, in the future should you have the time/funds I was able to get someone else to add an extra piece of treated latex/neoprene to my tail and it's amazing. I tried really hard to swim in it when it was too short because I assumed the same thing as you- I'd be stretched out (it was the same for me if I stretched out it seemed to cover so I thought I'd be fine) but it wasn't the case and I kept having to pull it up and eventually that just made for unfun swimming. With my extra 10 inches I had added on it comes up over my belly button on land (unless I pull it down some) but your tail is always going to pull down some when you swim so when I'm in the water it's below my belly button.

So there's a couple of avenues you could go
1) Have someone add on an extra piece- you'll have a tiny seam but I promise you people never notice mine and having that extra length makes SO much difference.
2) Try a belt- this will cover the bit of your bum but it wouldnt really help keep it up when you sit or swim unless you sew it into the tail (I say this because I tried EVERY avenue with mine before sending it to Raven to add the extra 10 inches)
3) I know Eric does alterations for a small fee too if you send it back
4) Meshpa had success with filing her monofin down a few inches. It let the monofin slide a little further into the tail so your feet go deeper and the tail comes up. It wont work if your tail is glued down, and if you're not careful you can make the bubbling fluke thing worse and end up with a bulge. (which you *could* fix if you were able to take in the fluke on your own)

Just a few ideas for you. Really you wont know what works til you get using your tail a bit more in and out of the water. The stuff stretches naturally anyway overtime so after a bit of using it it may end up long enough anyway. I hope one of these suggestions work for you :)

Can't wait to see what you end up doing with it!

I think he is getting better the negative reviews could have been a wakeup call and the recent reviews have been good and the pictures on his Facebook look good i hope every one can kiss and make up

As a follow up to the low in the back problem; I pinged Eric to ask if I sent him a pattern piece (remember I'm a seamtress part time) if he would send me a matching piece that would match the tail. I have a sewing machine that can pretty much sew through anything but if that doesn't work I'll hand sew it on with a leather tool. It will save the time, expense and worry of me shipping it back and forth and I can have it higher in the back.

I want to stress that this was not a mistake on Eric's part; he made the tail to my measurements I sent. I forgot to allow for the dipping in the back when bending and just made it to where it would lay normally if standing. I also want to point out that Eric did offer to fix it for me himself if I wanted to send it back but we'll try the pattern piece first. :D Well I'll try the whole thing out first with swimming in it to see what works & what doesn't work! :D

but see my main complaint here, is I feel it IS his responsibility to accommodate for that in what he asks you for measuring. That's just my opinion though- but it's clearly an issue that still needs tweaking on his end if people are *still* continuing to get tails that show their butts even when using correct measurement. That's a design flaw. The measurements should specify for that type of information and as far as forgetting to add extra inches etc he says right on it to give exact measurements not to add or subtract.

I think it would really help Eric (and since he does read my posts and still takes my suggestions as I've clearly seen, I will state it in hopes he'll take it!) would be to have an actual measurement chart. Describing where you want measurements from can be tricky e.g. "the widest part of your hips starting from your belly button." what if from my belly button across is not the widest part of my hips? I think having an actual drawing of someone from the waist down with notifications of where the measurements go, and perhaps having the measurements taken while sitting instead of standing, or he should by default add an extra few inches of height etc.

Andrew sent me a really smart diagram to show me how he wanted me to measure certain parts of my feet for his monofin. There's no way I would have understood without the diagram but now I am that much surer he'll get the right measurements.

Rose, just keep in mind if he does send you an extra piece that it'll still have a curing time :) when Raven did mine it took a while to stretch and cure first and then she attached it. (she actually took apart my whole tail though to make the measurements what mine actually were) but yeah- I think that's THE best way to go. You will have a seam but it'll likely only be noticeable to you and really it's just piece of mind. You dont want your butt showing or being afraid of it showing. Plus you can have the extra part so it covers your butt and if you find it too high in the front just trim it down :)

Good luck! I hope you can make it all work :) I think the silicone tails Eric does look very nice and they seem to get mostly a positive review- but I do feel the latex are lacking and need to be improved with all the issues for sizing, fluke bubbling up, hiding the monofin etc. Hopefully you can figure out a solution that works for you. *nods*

I believe I did which is why I started this thread. As for your comment, you have the right to express your opinion in your own review thread rather than mine. I am *very* tired of all the negativity on this board and your comment was of no use except to be snarky on this thread.

Raina, I will ask about the curing time. As for the seam I'm actually thinking of having a sort of crescent moon shaped piece that stars from the side seams and goes up in the center to give that higher part in the back. I do not need any extra length in the front that I know of at this time but will make sure this weekend when I swim with it and decide from there. That way there will only be a seam in the back. We'll see; I will experiment! :D

I agree. My original thought was that Eric asked for the exact measurements so he could add any extra inches that are needed for a well fitting tail. One example would be the extra length issue, another would be extra width in the ankle and knee area. I believe this is why there are bunching issues. Measuring with your feet together are going to be different measurements than when your feet are inside a monofin, and this affects the width of the ankles and the knees. Therefore the tails are made too tight and end up most of the time with wrinkling issues at the ankles and knees. If he is going to ask for exact measurements HE needs to take responsibility for adding the extra measurement necessary to make a well fitting tail. After all he is the tailor in this. He says that he takes no responsibility for inncorect measurements, but he needs to take responsibility for altering the measurements correctly to tailor the tail correctly- it's his job.

That's a wonderful idea! I know my tail I added a few extra inches when ordering as I'd heard people had issues with them being too short. It fits great in the water in that I don't have to worry about pulling it up, but on land it comes up above my belly button and can look a bit unflattering at times. Dipping down in the front could be the solution to this. Let us know how it goes!

it's really important to see how it fares in the water too like you said- because the natural pull will bring the waist down lower. Mine covers my belly (which is great because I have minor scoliosis so even on my flattest days I get a nice roll, lol) dry but the second I hop in that water and it gets wet it drags back to my waist line top of my bathingsuit. So when you're swimming if you find a lot of your suit is showing you may still need it in the front. I think it's safer to go all around and then trim to your desire. I prefer having the extra bit there to cover my belly. I have a birth mark right next to my belly button that some kids find waaay too weird. lol. So it's nice to cover it up.

You'll also need to see how the fluke feels for ya too all of that aside. It doesn't look like it's glued down and you'll have to decide if you wanna do that or not. I find it really helpful- but I guess silicone is the way to go to fill it from what I've heard.

Isn't it so exciting to have a realistic tail though? Wait til you get that dolphin kick down! The power behind that monofin is so awesome you'll never wanna swim without it again!

you have the right to express your opinion in your own review thread rather than mine.

Ryan, Im actually interested in hearing your experience because I'm not sure I ever heard it! Maybe you should make a thread, or you could PM me I promise not to bring it up publicly if you dont want :p

I am not looking for an argument or problems I'm just wondering how the statement above makes any sense in any context. If he follows the measurements of the client to the letter, why is he responsible for the mistake of the client? Please elaborate. He gives directions on his website about how to measure properly. If they decide not to follow said directions it is their responsibility to pay for alterations to their tail. It is not Eric's fault for making the tail to the measurements he was given, and it is NOT his responsibility to take the financial impact of the clients mistake. BUT if it is Eric's fault he does take it back for free, and I know this first hand since I live with him.

I agree with Scarlett (who started this thread in the first place)....this thread should be kept positive! Clearly she is HAPPY with the product she received, and even though seems to be a minor "hiccup" as far as how low it sits. However, she has found solutions and remedies for this and is taking care of it. There are other threads where people put up their complaints...maybe any negative comments should be kept there. This is a time that we should be HAPPY for Scarlett!

I think what Raina means is that if the instructions produce a consistent flaw, the problem is with the instructions.

It is, nevertheless, a very pretty tail, and looks good on Scarlett.

That could be possible, but again, it would be the customers fault for misreading while ordering. It says on the website to measure ABOVE the belly button, which is where the waist is anatomically located, so either way it is stated, Eric is not liable for the consumers faults. :) I am only making corrections where they are needed. I mean no offense to anyone.

Making a suggestion for how to fix her "product" isn't being negative. I believe if Rose felt my comments to be negative she would have said so or PMed me, she's nice like that.

And as far as Eric's boyfriend "Matty" joining the site, Hi Matty. Welcome. Do actually get involved in our forum before you spend every waking moment defending everything you perceive to be an attack on your boyfriend.

I think what Raina means is that if the instructions produce a consistent flaw, the problem is with the instructions.

Exactly. And while I could have gone into a great rant in my post, I didn't. It's my opinion, it's valid, it's professionally and respectfully worded. You dont have to like it- but you can personally PM me and take it up with me and keep your drama outta the thread. My statement makes perfect sense. This is an issue that keeps happening (not everyone is brave enough to post is so publicly for this exact reason- they fear retribution) - that Eric is the past has admitted publicly and within an apology- regardless so something should be adjusted with the technique. And if you bother to read the rest of my message, you can see I'm quite "positive" and make several thoughtful suggestions for how he could get around that. So it makes perfect sense.

Thank you for the welcome.

I don't care if you are making suggestions on how she can fix her tail, that is not what I can pertaining to. I am talking about how his website CLEARLY states what you should do for the best results. Some people, including you, decided not to follow said directions. I have a tail and I measured it myself and my tail fits perfect. And you can go on a long rant if you want, it still does not validate your false perceptions of his company. It is up to the CONSUMER to provide accurate measurements. If they do not, it is their responsibility to take whatever actions necessary to make the product the way they want, even if that means paying extra for their mistake. And I am not afraid to publicly post because before I post something on this kind of location I make sure all my facts are straight and not based on a previous encounter. And it's good that you are positive when it needs to be. And I am not spending every waking moment on defending my boyfriend, the fact of the matter is he doesn't need defending. His art, his passion is more effective on the lives of people than the things people can say negatively about him. In my opinion, the negative comments posted on this website are just as important as who the star quarterback is dating. It's nothing more than high school like drama, so I am only here do to as you do. Place my opinion, make suggestions, correct incorrect information, and bring false accusations to light. So I am here as a neutral party, if I see Eric is wrong I will tell him and post about it, but if he is not I will correct the party that has the wrong idea or false information.

The main point of me posting is me saying that THE MEASUREMENTS ARE THE DUTY OF THE CUSTOMER, Eric triple checks his measurements before even painting the tail, so measurements are rarely his issue. He makes sure that the customer gets the tail the way they have asked, and to the measurements given. That is all. :)

Rose, I hope you'll forgive me for de-railing your topic for a post. The mods can feel free to move these things around hide/delete later if need be.

I am talking about how his website CLEARLY states what you should do for the best results.
So are you saying Rose didn't give him her exact measurements as she claims? You seem to be misunderstanding the point winged mermaid and I make- we're not talking about the customer mis-measuring, or Eric mis-measuring. We're saying the current way of measuring and communicating measurement is not error free as many have demonstrated. So a review of that should be in order to improve it. Good professional businesses improve their practices. Professionals also don't have their boyfriends argue with customers. Keep in mind that when you affiliate yourself in such a way you are representing his company. Many people come to these threads to decide whether or not they'll buy from Eric and their opinion can be changed by seeing such behaviour.

Some people, including you, decided not to follow said directions
Ah, this recent new attempt to discredit me- the "Raina is lying" bit. Too bad Eric has all ready publicly admitted fault both in text (which is documented and all ready posted on this site) and both verbally to many people who worked with him and do no longer. That excuse really isn't going to work. And the thing you and Eric both don't seem to get into your head- it's been years! I dont care that my tail didn't fit right anymore- someone else made it better for me and that's awesome. I care about this kind of behaviour right here. This is supposed to be a safe place for customers to post their reviews HONESTLY. it's not a safe place if people are afraid saying anything negative will mean a bad tail from Eric or no help from Eric. it's not a safe place where if someone posts something critical- Eric's boyfriend comes at them on the forum. I'm waaay over the tail, it would not make any sense for me to hold a grudge over that... but I keep trying to move on from you guys- yet you keep pulling stunts like this. :\ I mean, seriously?

And you can go on a long rant if you want, it still does not validate your false perceptions of his company.
uh? I didn't rant? LOL. I gave Rose suggestions on getting around her issue :P

And I am not spending every waking moment on defending my boyfriend, the fact of the matter is he doesn't need defending. His art, his passion is more effective on the lives of people than the things people can say negatively about him.

This is exactly what you're doing. :\ no body goes into a thread where someone is 100% happy with their tail and have had no issues or mishaps and starts bashing Eric. Just look at Claudio's review if you need further proof of that. If Eric's work speaks for itself, then why not let it speak for itself and stop insisting on trying to censor people? The constant deleting of negative comments on his fan page, the streamlined controlled positive reviews, making a callout post to me as a "cyberbully" because I answer people's questions about my experience honestly. Perhaps a lesson about the Streisand effect is in order? If the community were treated with respect (which Eric does not respect it he's clearly stated several times all documented) I think you'd find a lot less negative comments.

So I am here as a neutral party
You are anything BUT a neutral party. You have his best interest in mind, you're his boyfriend. It stresses him out that people can be negative here so you want to swoop in and stop that. You've all ready proven to me right now that you're dishonest (or he's being dishonest with you) by accusing me of lying about my own measurements.

I can back up every single claim I make, and I do not take threats of "providing false information" lightly. The website becomes negative and dramatic with actions such as yours.

And I'll repeat this again, you have an issue with me, you know because I'm big bad Raina the cyberbully- you can certainly PM me to work it out. I have to say it's hard not to make the assumption that you're simply here to create drama when you refuse to speak with only me about your issue that is clearly, only with me. Nope, gotta post publicly so everyone can see ya right? This is ROSE'S thread about her tail. Perhaps you can HELP the community by posting your OWN review, and perhaps some pointers on properly measuring since you seem to be so sure of the process. You know- a video tutorial showing something like that would be excellent. Either way your "ahh lies about Eric" speeches are better suited to your own thread. Unless you;ve got something you'd like to actually say to Rose in her joy of having new tail? (or am I going to go to sleep and wake up to a slew of messages about how I'm a bully because I challenge your statements again... or perhaps a slew of unprofessional facebook statuses that aim to single out myself or members of the forum in some petty inside joke)

Okay, let's please move back towards Rose :)

I think the main problem is just that laying down and sitting up makes your butt have different shapes and measurements I guess is the simplest way to say it. Most people measure standing up or laying down. But if it's fixable, then I wish you the best in fixing it, Rose :D

No, I am not saying Rose didn’t fulfill her part of the tail making process, on the contrary, she did her part flawlessly and she looks gorgeous with no equal!

The current way of measuring and communicating the measurements is as good as it is going to get, I don’t see you complaining about how Mike and Thom communicate their measurements, they do it the same way. And there is nothing, NOTHING, on this planet that is error free. He is an AMAZING professional business and he is improving his practices, not because of what you or anyone on this forum say, but because he wants to improve so he can overcome himself. People do come to this forum to get background information on his products and their opinion can be swayed either way, but you continuously posting about him will make you look petty and ignorant.

First off, I am in no way trying to “discredit” you with the “Raina is lying” bit. I never said you lied, I clearly stated you just measured wrong. In addition, Eric only apologized in the hopes that you and other people would stop bringing him up on this forum.

And it has been years since your experience with Eric, so if you are over it why do you constantly bring it back up and bring up your experience when it isn’t even relevant to the current situation.

Customers can post their reviews honestly if they want, Eric nor I mind if they post their good OR bad review, he bases his improvements off of customer reviews. You were a customer until you took your tail elsewhere. And I have not “come” at anyone nor will I. So don’t make that assumption. I am glad you don’t hold a grudge, that is a sign of maturity. And what stunt do you speak of? Me doing exactly what you’re doing? Stating my opinion? Correcting false information? Giving advice? I have just as much of a right as you do. I may not be a well known or world famous mermaid, but neither are you. I will tell you how it is without holding back. Because I have enough respect for people in general to do so.

I know you didn’t rant. I never said you did. I said you CAN, which you didn’t. And Rose is a highly talented seamstress, I highly doubt she needs your assistance on making a decision of what to do with her situation.

I am not defending Eric, if he does something wrong I will correct him as well. And I got my tail and so did some friends of mine and they were all 100% happy with their tail, I paid off my tail and so did my friends. We earned them just like you all did. And the satisfaction or earning it and being able to have a dream come true.

Claudio’s review only helped Eric’s work speak for itself. Claudio and Eric are still in contact to this day about how much he loves his tail and the projects he’s doing with his tail. And everyone censor’s because some things are better handled discretely, not everyone can comprehend the bounds of that situation.

You can answer people’s questions all you want, I don’t mind, that is your right. But you don’t have to comment on EVERY SINGLE POST that pertains to Mertailor or Eric. And don’t EVER offer a lesson in anything to me. You are not above me in any way.

In my honest opinion, if Eric wants to disrespect the “Mermaid Community” he can, because without people like him there would be no “Mermaid Community.” You would be swimming around in a duct tape garbage bag.

I am neutral, you may think otherwise but that means nothing to me. Yes I have his best interest in mind, but right now I am a third party viewer and I am correcting those that are wrong in this point in time. If he is wrong I will correct him. First off, it doesn’t stress him that people are posting negatively about him, he doesn’t care because he’s confident in what he does and he get HUNDREDS of positive posts and emails and phone calls every day, so the negative posts you all make on this forum don’t even equate. I am not being dishonest and he is not being dishonest with me. I’m not saying you lied about your measurements I’m saying you got them wrong, but no one ever wants to admit their wrong so you can stick to your story but you me and Eric really know what happened, so it’s ok.

That is nice that you can back things up, that just shows major sense of paranoia in my opinion. And I made no threats I just said I would correct someone providing false information, it wasn’t directed at you, it was a broad and general statement.

If the website becomes negative and dramatic because of me doing exactly what you do, then it is uncontrollable. I am technically a customer of Eric AS WELL as his boyfriend, and as a customer I have no complaints, my tail is gorgeous and it fits perfectly.

I have no personal problem with you. And honestly it’s not worth my time to private message you. I do not have a problem with anyone on this forum, I do not know any of you nor do I plan to get to know any of you. I am here for informational purposes only.

I will make my own review and I think I will actually get Eric to make an instructional video of how to measure since there seems to be an overwhelming amount of people not able to understand how to do it.

And no one has to approve of Rose’s tail or how she looks, she knows she’s a gorgeous woman and as long as she loves her tail that’s all that matters, any smart woman knows it’s not about how it looks, it’s about what attitude you wear it with.

TL;DR- PM with your personal issues :)- I dont think I really need to make a come back, you dig your hole deep enough for yourself... it'spretty disrespectful to Rose that you're continuing your personal drama in her thread after twice (now 3 times) being encouraged to deal with it personally. (though it seems from your reply you don't actually understand more than 1/2 of what I said.) and you lied at least 3 times that I can see.

A lot of poor defenseless electrons are being molested over what should be a simple fix. The instructions should state (Mind you, I've never seen them) that results can differ depending on sitting, standing, swimming etc., and should include ways to fix that. No need for angst.

Ain't this a great forum? I can tell a perfect stranger, like Scarlett, that she has a pretty tail and not deserve a slappin'!

*Headdesk*headdesk*headdesk* @ the drama.

PleasePleasePlease stop. I am very happy with my tail. It needs to be tweaked but it's being taken care of SO THERE IS NO PROBLEM. I am very happy with the customer service I have gotten. I am very happy with my tail. End of story! :D

As for everyone else, please tell me more how much you love my tail *preens* ;)

@Rose: You look so gorgeous in your tail! I love that you're so happy with it. When will we be able to see a video of you swimming in it?

@merfanatic:
1. I have an awesome duct tape tail, thank you very much.
2. I like the idea of a video tutorial on how to measure. That seems like a good idea.

Wow...

Scarlet you look simply stunning in your tail!!!! When I saw that tail on his FB page "preview" I KNEW it was made for you!!!! It just looked so perfect for you, and it looks perfect on you too!!!! Too bad about the rear, but I know you will get it taken care of! Doesn't look like your bum peeks out too much so at least you can wear it in the mean time! :) Hope you have a great time at the lake and get lots of good shots!!!!

Thank you for posting a such well thought out review. You were very fair and thurough! I would love to get a Mertailor tail one day, was just waiting for some of the better reviews to come out! So thank you for posting one, my hopes are on the rise again!!!! <3

Wanted to add an update to my review. The tail was a little short in the water but still very swimable. Got some great pics! Lookit:

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6174/6183301960_c1e5d00d1e_b.jpg

It looks teal in that pic but it was too bright out for my hubby's cellphone to get the right color.

Anyways! I wanted to add that I chatted back and forth with Eric on what to do about the length. I asked for just an extra piece to add onto the top of it but Eric went above and beyond and offered to re-make the tail for me so I wouldn't have the line where the new piece was attached! I accepted his offer & I am very excited to see the new tail though I must admit I'm loathe to give this one up as aside from the top length the color, texture and fluke are exactly what I dreamed of. So perfect! Seriously, I love the fluke so much.

Speaking of the fluke I didn't have any bubbling problems with it at all; it stayed as flat as can be. I couldn't find any other problems with it at all and trust me; I'm a *very* critical persons when it comes to costumes pieces I buy from other people. ;)

I'll be having a photoshoot done as soon as I get the new tail as big things are going to be announced soon that involve this tail! :D Can't wait to share them with you but I've been asked to keep mum for the moment so indeed I shall! ;D
