View Full Version : My First Dragonskin Tail
Rogue Siren

Well, my first tail ever actually.... xD Bad idea to start with such expensive material......but I must. Lol
And to keep me on track I'm making this thread.
I may or may not actually post pictures....because my idea is somewhat original (I haven't seen anything like it).
First I'll make the scale sheet. I'm figuring I'll use craft foam. Do you think its possible to put a layer of clay over the foam to help with detailing?
Also, how large should the scale sheet usually be? Any clay people recommend over others?
Thanks!

I believe most people here use Monster Makers and really like it--personally I work with Sculptex Soft right now for another project but I don't know if that'd work for mermaid tails. Highly encourage you to just keep reading up on Dragonskin Tail threads, there's quite a few of them and I'm pretty sure they'll tell you what sort of clay they like. :3

Well....I've never seen a tail designed such as this....so if someone steals the idea, oh well. XD Means it was a good one.
I'll be buying craft foam to start on the scale sheet when I get paid tomorrow. Yay! Lol
I'm wondering if the tail design would work though. I know the fins would weigh it down, but would the fluke/caudal fin give enough push?

Thanks, guys! :)

Hi milieu!
i really love monster makers clay. It really captures detail well and is reuseable! It melts very easily in the microwave and you can use a blow dryer to melt it just a little when you're sculpting.
i love your design! It's very pretty and reminds me of a leaf! If I remember correctly, one of the first finfolk tails had a leaf like fluke too...but it was a different style than your design.
your design should give you plenty of propulsion in the water if you use a good monofin! Based on the shape of your design, you might want to consider a finis wave/rapid. I'm using a wave for the tail I'm working on now because of the long fluke design. Wider monofins like a competitor would require a massive fluke to get the shape in your design because of the width of the monofin.
Good luck with your tail! It's so nice to see so many people making silicone tails!

I will be making a tail as soon as I can myself...however, I just found out that my crap company is laying us off....so....yay unemployment? *le sigh* hopefully I will be able to get another job soon...but as I have a somewhat secret tail mentor (as I am not sure if she wants me to say anything just yet) I can use her scale board and fluke mold...cuts some costs in half :)

Thanks, Jessica! :) I want it to be a kind of freshwater/dragon mermaid. X3
@Littlepolly- got my paycheck! Whoo! XDDD
I'm sorry, JamesGunnels. :( At least you get free molds! That's the hard part....Lol
So I got my craft foam! And I spent like two hours roaming around Michaels.....*headdesk* I really shouldn't do that....Lol
I've got supplies for accessories now too. :) I'll probably sell some as well to help out...I have a lot of supplies. XD

yeah, it'll definitely help me out, but I do at one point in time want to make my own scale board and fluke molds :) I think that's half the fun designing the scale board and fluke mold...you get to see your designs come to life and it is a great feeling to know that you created something so beautiful :D

Ive used makers monsters clay for my filpper and fins. its great for detail and most importantly it can be used multiple times. it will also hold its shape, will not crack and its very flexible. the only negaitve thing i found is it very difficult to roll out with a rollin pin. even when its soft. when creating your flipper and fins create them on a template. thin card works well, this will help with the extracting of the piece when the mold has set. plaster of paris works great.

So here's my first accessory (been putting off the scale sheet....LOL).

Thank you Mizuko! :) I have started on one of my scale sheets (using two different ones for this design), and it is coming along nicely. Just no pictures right now... And I'm having a dilemma of leaving the textures my fingers left while molding, or smoothing them and adding my own specific texture.... xD
Thanks, Julz!
And on the accessory front, I finally got the arrow heads I have been wanting! Removed the shell on the necklace and replaced it with a light grey/ivory arrow head. :)
And here is where I will be having my first photoshoot when I finish my tail.... x3

Way ahead of myself, I know. But I visit this place any chance I get! I love it. It was inspiration for my Mersona. :) A freshwater mermaid. The place in the photo was home to many Native Americans, and were sadly taken away on the Trail of Tears. Other random fact, Jesse James was said to have hid out there behind the rocks next to that waterfall! xD

Suprisingly, Northwest Alabama. Dismals Canyon. Night can be even cooler because the walls light up with little glowworms affectionately called dismalites! :) Which is a reason I've toyed around with the LED light idea.... Wonder how Raven's LED tail worked out. :/

Urgent question so that I don't ruin hours of sculpting! XD
I am using plastalina modeling clay (van aken) and plaster of paris. Do I need to use any sort of release agent so the plaster doesn't stick? If so what? Totally new at this mold thing, thanks! :)
Trident True
12-12-2013, 07:08 PM
if your clay is a plastacine clay, meaning having an oil base to it then no, you wont need a release agent. MMC is the same and ive been working with plaster. have a look at my thread called Kyle's H20/Mako mermaids inspired tail with a splash of personality!!!!!

Thanks for the advice! It would likely have been another month until I could afford the resin....xD And I'm the impatient sort. ;)
Just because it's my first time working with molds doesn't mean I haven't sculpted before. ^^ I'm definitely an artsy person, and I love making costume related things. :) Your stuff looks great too anyway! Just styled a bit differently.
So now I have one scale sheet layed out in clay. Just needs smoothed then detail added. Took a little over a pound of plastalina. The fins took less than half.

Yep. The front scales will overlap the back at the seams. So the seams will be pretty obvious, but look natural like they're supposed to be there. Hidden in plain sight you could say. :)

Quick Question: How many gallon units of dragonskin should I plan on ordering?
Samantha Siren
01-02-2014, 09:06 AM
I think you need to order 2 (Gallon units). It's technically 4 gallons as part a&b are a gallon each!
PearlieMae
01-02-2014, 10:06 AM
I don't think so...The buckets are less than a gallon each, and there is room in the bucket to stir it. I could be wrong, though.
LaNyah
01-02-2014, 10:18 AM
They are sold as 'gallons' because of the bucket size. It's an easy way to refer to it. Truth is, Smooth-On actually sells by weight (per my conversation with them 2 days ago). This is why the gallon bucket isn't always full.
But there again, in terms of how to order, they use the term 'gallon size.'

At the moment my tail is on hold due to classes. I just have no time! Dx
And I realized how out of shape I am today. I felt like I was going to die after an hour of swim class! And it was only front-crawl. *shakes head*
I found out that the aquatic center allows monofins! :D I'm going to test my new one out tomorrow. :D

First swim ever in a monofin today!!! :D So amazing! It was fantastic! I could feel myself cutting through the water. And unlike the day before where I was exhausted and out of breath after an hour of swimming (without a monofin), today I wanted to just keep swimming (just keep swimming....lol). I swam a little over an hour today, but had to leave because I told a friend I would go watch Frozen with her again. XD
I also attempted some bubble rings for the first time. They're suprisingly easy! :)
I can't wait to go back to the pool. X3
Oh, and anyone have some tips in equalizing your ears? There was some cloth at the bottom of the pool that was annoying me, so I took off my goggles and swam down to get it and it hurt (like it always has). But I would love to be able to swim deep more often. Also, this was a diving/lap pool. Not sure exactly how deep it is, but I was in the lane on the incline to deeper water.

Thanks... :)
At least it looks like you might finish yours before Raven finishes hers though. xD
Well, maybe. Either way, I'll have a nice top.

So...no progress updates. :( I have gotten nowhere. So much to do! SO busy! Dx
I got my hair colored like Rogue from the X Men movies....so I'll probably be changing the colors I had in mind for my tail a bit.... (My natural hair color is brown. I merely got the front dyed white. And I LOVE it btw...)
Also...I found this. <3 I love this picture oh so much.....I just.... *sighs dreamily* Lol

Hahaha! I know. XD I'm amazed at all the mermaid fanart there really is. I already found one of Elsa from frozen as a mermaid! Lol
Anyway, not completely tail related, but I should have some Dragonskin FX Pro coming in the mail tomorrow! So excited to get to play with it and see what its like. I'll be testing silicone out with some scale prosthetics for another costume. :) Then my birthday money should allow me to get the Dragonskin 10 for my tail. :D

Thanks guys! :) Thanks to my birthday money, I should finally be able to purchase my silicone in a few weeks! :D
I did get a trial sample of the FX Pro for another project, and it turned out great!

So besides the Dragonskin 10, what else should I buy? What kind of pigments are best, and how much should I need? Thanks! :)

Opinions! I need opinions. :D
So I'm gonna make some gills, should they be for the ribs or the neck? Where do you guys prefer they be located? :)

So I'm gonna make some gills, should they be for the ribs or the neck? Where do you guys prefer they be located? :) I personally think gills should be on the ribs, because for a creature the size of a human, the gills would have to take up as much space as lungs do. However, every time I try to mold gills for my ribs, it just ends up looking like I'm emaciated (the gills could easily be mistaken for bony ribs). Hopefully you would have better luck making them look real.

gills are cool. I agree with ribs, but its an artistic decision.

And I borrowed my school's camera to video me swimming so I could know what the heck I look like. Lol

You've done a great job there! Your swimming looks really elegant!
But from what my lifeguard and boyfriend keeps telling me: goggles are not for swimming deeper than the surface. This is because you are unable to even out hte pressure while you swim deeper and may eventually hurt your eyes badly. The solution to this is either a diving mask that covers your nose so you can exhale into it keeping pressure even or... no mask at all.
Anyway, I liked the video much and the music too. An you have such a HUGE pool... and it's almost empty!

For the kind of mermaid I want to be, bony ribs would look kind of creepy cool. :) Some artistic examples I've seen make the gills look almost like scars with red flesh. I'll definitely need to play with it.

And thank you! I was lucky with the pool. It was my school's Olympic sized pool and no one ever swam near the diving end because they usually didn't have lanes put up. You're allowed to swim there, but no one but me seemed to ever want to! :)
Don't worry about the googles thing. I did a great deal of reading/research into it. The brand is safe for the depth I swim as long as I put the goggles on loosely at the surface.

So my original ideas have been scrapped! xD I found someone to cover materials, and am now working on their tail. I also have two others in the waiting cue.
This was the design we decided on.

The top to match is finished. The scales, fins and fluke have all been sculpted and cast. Just waiting on the monofin to arrive to put it all together!
