hey everyone! i was curious what everyone thought about recreational mers having/using silicone tails?
I know a lot of performing mers use them because they look realistic but what about non-performing mers? I know they are a huge investment so maybe to some it wouldn't be worth it...what do you guys think? :)

If you have the money to do it, GO FOR IT!!! :thumbs up: Silicone tails are beautiful, and if you really want one, I wouldn't let being a recreational mer stop me! My reasons for not getting one have more to do with making sure this is something I am going to stick with before I go and spend that much money, and also wanting to lose weight so I don't have to have it taken in and taken in and taken in.

Echinacea- totally! :) it would suck to spend thousands on one and then lose interest.

It would depend on the mer! If you aren't sure if you want to invest in a silicone tail, I'd suggest swimming a season or two in a fabric tail. If mermaiding is definitely going to be part of your life, you will probably move mountains to get a silicone tail.

That's not to disparage fabric tailed mers, I've been mermaiding for a long long time and will be soon finishing my first silicone tail this winter.

I agree with PearlieMae and Echinacea.

If you have the money and have gone through a fabric tail or two, then go for it! For almost year I was SO determined to save up for a silicone tail. I had my latex Fish Butt but I knew my next step would be a silicone tail. But after two swims in my Fish Butt, I kind of... Didn't feel this drive for a tail anymore. I was going through a lot of financial issues at this part in my life. As months past I found it more and more unrealistic to get a silicone tail. Like a lot of people, I really wanted a Merbella tail. But now, I don't think I could bring myself to do it. Just growing up into the adult world, I see all the money you have to spend on basic things like rent, bills, gas, food, ect. I couldn't imagine putting out $3,000 when it could be used for sooo many more important things in my life. I'm doing much, much better with money currently and I paused to consider getting a silicone tail a month ago. After thinking about it for a week, I couldn't get myself to consider it. I much rather put the money in the bank and save it up for a rainy day or a plane ticket to travel someday.

A silicone tail is not the end all and be all of being a mermaid. If you feel it in your heart you don't even need flippers!

I agree with what PearlieMae has just said above "if you feel it in your heart you don't even need flippers"

I am a new mermaid starting out and have just got fabric tails at the moment but whether they are fabric or full silicone long as you feel you can live your dream to be a mermaid it's all worth it in the end. I am currently saving up for my first silicone tail I am not planning to spend a massive fortune my goal is $1000 will take a bit to reach that but I am willing to save that to realize my true dream to have a full tail like that. So it depends all on what you want in the end !!! :)

^^I feel mermaidy as soon as I am below the surface anywhere xD
Doesn't matter if I have a tail on or not. It feels like the place where I belong.

Still, silicone tails are gorgeous.
I barely have the money for daily necessities, so I won't ever own one, but if you have the cash to spare, go for it if you want to! :)

Being a mermaid is totally all in your mind, and I think whether or not you get a silicone tail just depends in what you are willing to spend money on and how much disposable income you have. I am single, I own my house and car (no payments), and I make about $50,000 a year before insurance and taxes, so for me paying off $3,000 in a few months is not a huge deal. Now, if I had a husband and kids to cars for, that would be a whole nother deal. At this point in my life I can do it. If I give it up in the future, it will probably make me feel a little guilty, but it won't have put me in debt for five years or whatever. Overall, I don't think it really has anything to do with being a pro, cause there is no guarantee even a pro will make back the investment. I think silicone tails are for anyone who really loves mermaiding and can afford it/has the patience to save for it.
