Okay, I know this seems like a nutty question, but I really want to know! Do you see "real life" Ariel as being a natural redhead (with orange-ish undertones) or having pure red hair like in the movie? I have seen people do both. I have always thought of Ariel as being like this:

16112

But a lot of people say my hair, which is Christina Hendericks red (because I am in SERIOUS LUST, er, love, no, okay, lust her boobs are beautiful) is "Ariel" red.

How do you see Ariel? As a natural red head or "magical impossible flame" red?

Tend to think of the second or an in between more natural red.

I don't like the fire engine red look, I feel it leeks really cheap and unnatural.

I kinda lean towards her hair being RED red, from a strictly color wheel-based contrast look. The character is designed to have a long flowing green (with a faint shading of blue/turquoise) tail and long flowing red hair. In order to balance the look and achieve the striking appearance of the character, her hair would have to be predominantly Red red (with maybe a tint of orange, as opposed to human-like orange "red" hair). That said, most (perhaps all) wigs and hair dyes lack the shading of the disney art studio, and therefore look "off" or "wrong" on would-be Ariels in real life. Also, while the daughters of Triton's tail and hair and even eye colors are wildly different, they tend to have close to the same almost sandy tan skin color, not the fairer, blushier skin common to human redheads, and no noticeable freckles. Finally, in the prequel, Ariel's hair seems significantly more fiery a shade of red than that of either of her parents (which, as an aside, really doesn't explain the variety of Ariel's sister's hair and tail colors), both of whom are shown as being redheads with more humanlike coloration.

For a more natural, human redhead, I think Princess Merida of Brave fame is the only disney princess who qualifies. Ariel's status as a nonhuman (at least to begin with) makes her a bit outside the rules of human genetics, apparently (again, as evidenced by her sisters).

I think it depends on how you personally want to portray Ariel...

I mean, if you want to portray her in the living flesh, I would assume a natural red-hair color. But if you're wanting to do a Cosplay/Faithful-to-the-cartoon portrayal, then the fire-engine red is the only way to go. Kind of like blond hair gets mixed up for cartoon/comic characters. Is their hair blond or is it yellow or white? It's usually determined by the type of portrayal.

I've seen cosplays of blond and redhead characters done both ways, and they both look really good when consistent. I personally prefer the natural look because I think it's easier to pull off for most people - since not may people can make their whole face follow up the cartoonish look. But boy, when people get the cartoon-style makeup done just right and it's paired with the cartoon-colored hair, it's just absolutely jaw dropping!

While I like the color of natural red better, I think that candy-apple red is much more fitting for a real life Ariel. It's also a color I could never pull off :P
