Hey guys! I posted this in the "wavedancing forum" as well so i thought i'd share it here too. :)
After fishing for a few threads to see if there were any similar threads like this one, i decided to make one dedicated to interior design and how to make your own little humble mermaid abode. I hope the moderators and admins dont mind that i put the thread under traditional art since.. Home design technically falls under other art .__. that stuff is more difficult than it looks... but i digress.
Reason for this thread creation is that I bought my house over the summer; papers signed, payments made. All that's left is to go to the design office and have the house built!
but i had no ideas in my mind about what to do to make my home...mine. and after collecting a few images and stuff, i thought it'd be really nice to share with my sea sisters and brothers!
and i also would like to see what sort of designs and ideas you guys can come up with as well!
so i shall start.
i wrote about what kind of home i will have in my blog (one of the images is messed up..) so you guys can see what it kind of looks like.

I think my sense of style has kind of IMPROVED a bit. when i was in grade 5 i watched a lot of debbie travis painted house shows and other home decor/design challenge shows, and since i lived in a tiny apartment with my big family, i've always wanted to have my own dream home and fill it with all this cool stuff. when i look back on the images they looked childish. and even though i still want my mermaidy ocean home, i kept wondering.. how should i upgrade the look without sacrificing the awesome? and low and behold the above images in the links showed up. :)
Quite excited to share the process with everyone once the plans are in motion! i've always wanted to do this!

:swoon:OOOOH! I love this all so much! I'm planning on re-designing my apartment after the holidays and these ideas are so perfect! I love those stairs, with the blue gradient. I wish I had stairs in my apartment that I could paint! But those jellyfish lights are totally cool. Might have to do something like that.
Good luck with your house! That is so exciting to hear! The day that I get my own house to tear apart and decorate and make mine, man, that'll be an awesome day.

Ok so guys I realized I neglected the dining room and the open balcony. I don't know what I do with the dining room since its open concept .. Meaning there's no wall separating the kitchen and living room so everything is one big space. And for the big balcony, well... It can fit a patio set and a BBQ grill.
Clueless about what to do with the space. :(

Ok so I wanted to visualize what the space would be like so I decided to use sims to recreate the house. What sucks is how the stairs are designed and placed :( can't control how high they're supposed to go!!!!!
Made an almost scale replica of the place. had to tweak a few things because the sims scaling didnt exactly match the real floorplan
SeaGlass Siren
01-11-2014, 08:58 AM
Anyway there's not a lotta mermaids options on sims but I was able to make the second and first floor coastal and nautical themed..ish

Those are so cool!! I love the jelly lights.
I'm actually working on my mermaid fantasy home (well...apartment, lol) right now! We just moved in so I have a bunch of pics and decorations I haven't hung up yet but so far we've painted our walls seafoam green in the living room/dining area (the paint color is actually called "mermaid song". Go figure.) I have an iron mermaid statue near my plants, a jellyfish picture hung up that looks like a scientific poster kind of, a large shimmery ceramic sea shell that holds my candles, another candle holder that is filled with shells and sand, a conch shell I found which is now just kinda...hanging out, and a glass ball with a glass jelly inside. Maybe I'll post pics later.
We still have a ton of sea life and mermaid pictures to hang and a porthole mirror. But after all the work we put into this thinking about even MORE work just makes me want to go to bed, lol.

update: after the wedding my mother in law says i must move into their home until the place gets fully built. so while we're at it, we decided to give his older sister's room a makeover! (she has since moved out).
colours of the wall are basically mint coloured. and i'm refurbing their old furniture (painting them white and they're letting us keep it for the new house)
also i've been a magpie and collected things to decorate the room with. mason jars specifically, and fererro rocher chocolate boxes with seashells inside indetad of chocolates

ok so here is my hubby's room. used for work and sleep and videogaming. you can see we went with a dark nautical theme room. the pantings are mine, and the davy jones sketch was from a disney artist from fanexpo. 18619 18618 i helped him repaint his room last year which is why its kinda all over the place now.
and here is the room being worked on. 18620 the corkboard, chair, tables and stand are not mine but my inlaws gave them to me so technically they are mine now :P so i'm repainting them. the cd rack thats not been painted yet, i'll be turning that into my shoe stand.

i just finished painting the 1st layer of paint for the chair. still have to go with 2-3 more layers for a solid colour.

i finished painting this coffee table 2 weeks ago and i bought these pillows from a bankruptcy sale at sears.
18624this one is a stand i'm gonna use for my arts and crafts. the two seaglass looking containers i've also bought from the bankruptcy sale. they have two openings and can me used to hold ugly tissue boxes, candles, or anything you want. the chocolate boxes are empty ferrerro rocher boxes that i use to keep gemstones and tiny seashells. the empty jars i've gotten from friends so i've kept them and the blue stuff i've gotten from a package from traci hines :3 that make it look super cute.

the jellyfish lights could easily be made on your own i'm sure...they look simple enough. It looks like the same thin plastic some placemats are made out of...or you could go with these paper lantern ones. :)

YAAAS! They finally finished putting up the foundations for the house! eeep! so excited!
i get the keys to my new place on august 11th. 1 day AFTER MY BIRTHDAY!
We went to pick out our finishes for the house as well. Best part was we got a 8000 credit, so we put that towards the upgrades for the house (hardwood floors in the living area, extra light fixtures, cabling, and paint program so we don't have to break our backs painting...)
gotta wait until a year so we can do the attic and basement but i have a few ideas for those already too :P

I am so psyched - I paint too (nothing really great or anything) and I'm going to use a few ideas from etsy. In fact, for wall art, I was thinking about printing off a silhouette of a mermaid and then cutting it out in glitter paper - using a dollar store frame and some colored paper (or construction paper) behind the glitter paper mermaid or just mod podge the cut out and stick it to the wall with double sided sticky tape (got some at Walmart for $1)
And I can't wait to see more ideas for your house SeaGlass Siren!

my mother bought me a house warming gift: a beach scape on canvas. quite large. i do not have a picture of this because she will not give it to me yet,but she couldnt wait to surprise me so she just went "ANDREA I BOUGHT U SOMETHING FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY FOR THE HOUSE."... oh yes i get the keys on my birthday :P
went to michael's craft store and bought a bunch of nautical things for the home as well. there's a little board that says keep calm and think of the sea that i took home, a circular mirror with rope-framing, and two "books" that act as containers/ boxes. i'm using one of them atm as a medicine holder, and the other to stash my dream journals

i have something like that but it's a baby's night light (no shame ok? xD)
it's a Cloud B Tranquil sea turtle that projects ocean waves and you can place it in any part of the room. it also has a few features like playing ocean waves, or music, and you can keep the light still too.
it burned out after 5 months of use and now i have to switch out batteries lol.

I can't wait to see it SeaGlass! We moved earlier this year but I was too busy to work on my room design. My plan is for it to be like a pirate captain's room / a mermaid grotto or something like that. I am also super inspired by Tia Dalma's house decor in Pirates of the Caribbean - I mainly like all of the jars hanging from her ceiling. Right now it is pretty plain except for a wooden bowl in the corner filled with sequin shells and mermaid jewelry. I also have an old child's ski propped against the wall that I found buried in the sand on the beach. I like how old it looks haha. We got some wooden palettes for free and I am going to put them on my wall somewhere and somehow. I will have to figure out what I want to do with those.

Thats really creative alea!! Maybe you can use the glass jars and turn them into a light fixture for the dining room or kitchen? That seems to be a popular trend. And the skis as a piece of art on one of your bare walls in the dining room as a feature piece?

excuse the large images.
So the bedroom i've kept it pretty simple. except for the narwal hanging over the bed. i got that at whitefauxtaxidermy.com. they have a bunch of resin taxidermy heads and a lot of style options.
The pictures above the bed and the coral ottoman are from Home Sense. The bed frame, side tables, lantern, and light are from Ikea. Pillows and bedsheets were wedding gifts. The letters were DIYed by me. Cute water drop humidifier was from babies 'R' us (fun fact, i like to shop in the kids/babies section of any stores because they have all the cute nautical/sea stuff there.)

This is the hallway that i sorta made into my own gallery full of movie stills. the second image is a close up of each image. my hallway was super empty before. you'll notice it's all from movies that have at least something to do with the ocean or the water. i tried to pick the most simple images with a focal point.
at the end of the hallway is a small mirror. i havent hung the picture or the mirror up yet because i'm thinking of adding a shadowbox with my mermaid wedding gown and i dont want to commit to anything yet.

The pillow thing I'm still debating on. I have sensitive skin and lie on pillows a lot so I don't think mermaid pillows are for me lol! I am eyeing a few cushions for the patio though. The bedroom is pretty much done. the next project I'm gonna tackle is the walk in closet where most of my mermaid gear and clothes and accessories are hiding.

I wouldn't sleep on my mermaid pillow :) I think they are better for decoration and... let's be honest, entertainment.
This blog post has a few ideas on how you can use them for decor.

Check these out! Mermaid mugs!
They might be fun as some decor... or on a cold night.
Let me know if I missed any that would look good on a shelf.

Oh, wow. That's exactly what I was looking for! I want to have something like this on the wall in my new bathroom. I made some renovation there, installed a new toilet on my own as sanitaryreview (https://sanitaryreview.com/category/how-to/) advised and a bath tub like this https://www.amazon.com/Whirlpool-Massage-Hydrotherapy-Bathtub-BLUETOOTH/dp/B00CG8VWY2. Thanks for the idea! Where I can find anything like this?

Hello! I live in a big countryside house. And of course, now it is that moment when we need to repair it a little bit. I want to replace windows and doors, my husband wants to change the siding. I'm thinking that it is better to hire the company or contractors which can help. What are you thought about it?

I see what you are saying about renovation and I have something to add. I recently did a bedroom renovation and I found the article https://www.decoreso.com/bedroom-design-ideas/ to make my bedroom cozy very helpful. There you can learn about the best design ideas for your bedroom that you can use to decorate your bedroom in style. The main thing I learned is that you don't have to invest thousands of dollars in design and decor. Goodbye.

Hello to all the users of this forum! Recently my wife and I decided to make repairs to our house. We didn't have any problems with it, except for renovating our bedroom. We didn't know at all where to get new furniture and decorations for our bedroom. Thankfully, then I was lucky enough to stumble upon this website https://www.reviews.io/company-reviews/store/1stopbedrooms.com where I was able to read reviews on 1stopbedrooms. As it turned out, these guys sell great bedroom decorations and furniture, so we went to them and didn't regret it.

I recently worked with Etobicoke Plumbers https://www.absolutedp.com/etobicoke-plumber for basement waterproofing, and I'm thrilled with their exceptional service. The team's knowledge and attention to detail were impressive as they thoroughly assessed my basement and provided the best approach to address my issues. The outstanding quality of their workmanship was evident in how they sealed cracks, applied effective waterproofing materials, and implemented drainage systems. Etobicoke Plumbers' dedication to customer satisfaction was remarkable, as they addressed all my questions and left my basement clean and tidy.

I'd love to! Interior design is such an intriguing field for me. What I find most fascinating is how it combines creativity and practicality. It's like a puzzle, figuring out how each piece of furniture, each color, each texture fits together to create a cohesive, beautiful, and functional space. I'm particularly drawn to the way interior design can transform a simple room into a reflection of someone's personality and lifestyle. It's not just about aesthetics, but also about creating spaces that make people feel comfortable and happy. The power of a well-designed room to influence mood and productivity is truly amazing. Isn't it incredible how much impact our surroundings can have?

You know, I have a bit of a passion for interior design. It's one of those things that just clicked for me. I remember when I was designing my own house, it was such an exciting journey. One project that really stands out to me is creating my own bed. Now, this wasn't just any bed - I wanted something unique, something that reflected my love for adventure. So, I found myself browsing through countless kayaking photos (https://depositphotos.com/stock-photos/kayaking.html). I was inspired by the sleek lines of the kayak, the way it glides effortlessly through the water. So, I decided, why not incorporate that into my bed design? And so, the "kayaking bed" was born. It's a little unconventional, sure, but it's also a perfect representation of who I am. And isn't that what interior design is all about?

In real estate sales, I've learned it's not so important house design—it's all about right presenting it in photos to make buyers crave it. A virtual staging service (https://homery.design/services/virtual-staging/) are my secret weapon for achieving that irresistible appeal, regardless of the design! With the help of this service, even an empty house can be shown so cool that it will attract potential buyer or several.

Last month I redecorated my home and found some great ideas to share. I started by reading empire today reviews (https://www.carpetflooringreviews.com/) and getting inspired by people's ideas. If you want to transform a space, start with pops of color - bright pillows or paintings can instantly liven up a room. Try adding some greenery - indoor plants not only decorate, but also create a cozy atmosphere.
