Hi there! I'm new to the community and like most of us, I have been interested in mermaids for a long while. I was secretly in love with the little mermaid when it came out in 89, but I wasn't able to openly express myself back then with how my family structure was and my fear of public scrutiny until recently. There were times when I would have dreams that I could transform into a dolphin when I was about 6-12, and that I would bind my legs when I was in my early teens with duck tape and cellophane. I've always enjoyed swimming like a dolphin- it always felt more natural than the way silly humans swim. Now that I've transitioned through what needed to be addressed in my life, I can openly love Ariel- and not just because I work at Disney :). I also have in my room an original TLM poster from before they had to edit out the "phallic nature" of King Triton's castle lol.

As for my first tail, I'm leaning towards getting one from Merbellas within two years, but am also looking at others including Jazz's brand since her cause is near and dear to me too. Raina's publications and work for the community have also been a big influence for me joining up. I recently purchased a shorty wetsuit and my first monofin (a Finis Rapid) to start swimming year round in Central Florida (outdoors without a heater pump). I didn't realize until recently that the colors of my ensemble look like Finding Dory! Before then I just had regular diving fins that I would lock together at the middle and back and use some extra stretchy leggings for the shaft. I certainly love the thought of swimming with a tail rather than like a human... But I'm a bit big for my height and am :$ really really shy, so any purchase I make would be for my personal use rather than anything public. I don't even know yet what colors or design I'd settle on, as the last time I did anything was some photoshops I made from when I was still considering a fabric tail from foxmoon back in 2004. Now I'd want something that's a bit more natural/realistic and representative of the area I live in and the interests I have. Next monofin I get will likely be a Hydra.

Hi there! I'm always happy to meet other mers from Florida, especially Central Florida! It's wonderful that you can now revel in your love of mermaids and Ariel (I love her too! How about that New Fantasyland, eh?), being a closet mermaid is no fun. If you're interested in a tail before you can get a Merbellas, making your own spandex tail is really easy and there are lots of tutorials here to help you out (and I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have).

Hope to see you at a meet sometime!
