Man, with Christmas approaching all I am hearing from the teen BOYS at my school is how badly they want their new shoes--TENNIS SHOES that cost $500! Some special edition sneakers or something. One kid has 27 pairs of sneakers! Now, I have a lot of shoes, but they're cheap ones from, like, Payless and Target and Ross and stuff. I have some that cost maybe fifty or sixty dollars, but definitely not $500! HOWEVER, I am considering using my Christmas money from my family to purchase a pair of these shoes on Etsy, only instead of brown shoes with the green leaf it would be forest green shoes with a purple leaf. They cost $400 because they are custom, hand made moccasins. I have wanted them for YEARS (they have been in my favs on Etsy for SO long!) but I am afraid that once I get them I won't end up wearing them! The truth is, I pretty much wear my Toms every day, and I doubt I could get away with wearing these shoes to work unless I managed to SERIOUSLY dress the rest of my outfit up. Yet I LOVE them and all I have heard from people is how amazingly comfortable and wonderful the shoes these people make are. Plus I will be able to get them in Narrow, and I have very narrow feet but own NO narrow shoes! So that will be neat. What do you guys think? Should I take the chance and hope that they don't end up collecting dust at the back of my closet or save my $400 for something else? ARGH I HATE THESE KIND OF DECISIONS! Love versus practicality! And not knowing if I will REALLY use them when I get them. Plus the wait is over two months! Still... you have to admit they are COOL! What's y'all's opinions?

Those are really cute!!! Bah I feel you. I have a friend who spent $200 on heels. I just could never justify that. I bought $40 heels and i felt so guilty. I can't imagine spending over $100 on shoes. $100 shoes would have to be like shoes I'd wear everyday. Thank god I live in Florida where I can just wear flip flops 80% of the year.

Erm, $20? I think? I think I've of the last times I bought shoes was three years ago, and I only just recently retired them after they fell apart. I generally wear one pair of sandals or something until it gets too cold to wear without sending conflicting messages to the kids I sub with.
I guess I'm not a shoe person. I'd probably be more into them if there were any styles available that I like, though. It's all toe pinching, crappy vinyl, and too high heels.

I do think I like the ones you posted, though I'd want a different style probably. I think you have to take into account the process that goes into making those handmade custom shoes before comparing them to the cheap junk you can buy at Wal-Mart. Then it doesn't feel so weird spending that much. I would probably want to know about how long their life expectancy is with regular wear.

I have one pair of shoes. Had it for decades.
It wasn't expensive either.

Now, dance shoes, on the other hand...
I spent a fortune on those back when I was at it.

3 pairs of tap shoes, Irish, ballet, jazz, flamenco...uh-oh.

Well, I've a few pairs of shoes and boots in the $500+ range.... And I have a great deal more that are over $150. Most of these are "special" shoes (dance, historical repros, extant historic, designer formals, etc.), not tennis shoes. Tennis shoes are my $50 shoes, because tennis shoes just aren't "special" so to me, they hardly warrant anything over an $80 cost. Definitely not $500. But that's why I'm me, and not a teenage boy, lol.

I think $400 for a custom pair of costume boots is perfectly reasonable if you really want them and will put them to good use. The boots you want are only $100 more than a Competitor monofin, or the same price as that Lunocet monofin now that it's on sale. So if you put it in that light - the costuming light - you can see it's a reasonable thing.

I"d also like to point out that you'd be surprised with the footwear you can get away with, I wear my historical shoes ALL the time with stuff (sometimes the Dr. Martens or Chucks/JPs just don't cut it for how I'm feeling that day).... Especially jeans. No one thinks twice about them with jeans. I'd totally tuck skinny jeans into those boots and wear like a drape-y blouse with them. Tah-dah, fantabulous and acceptable for daily wear. Alternatively, if you just wanted to wear them because they're comfy but not draw attention to them, boot-cut jeans are good for that.

If you've been wanting them for a long time and your feet are done growing, you should go for it! They look awesome, super comfy.

I've only spent like up to $30 on shoes before...I danced for nine years and I don't remember how pricey the shoes were but I'd guess probably $80.

I own a pair of sneakers, flip-flops, waterproof snake boots, and biker boots. I might have a pair of dress shoes hiding in the closet, somewhere. When a pair wears out, I buy another pair. I wear the snake boots when I am walking in the woods or feeding critters. They cost around $200 when I bought them six years ago (to replace a pair that wore out).

I think the most I've spent on shoes was around the $50 range. I'm pretty hard on my footwear so I try not to spend too much for fear of ruining them!

I had a beau whose mom skated competitively for years!

If I told you how much I spent on a pair of shoes (back in the day), you would all chase me from the network with pitchforks.

I can't tell if that's a "I get them for free" chase with pitchforks thing, or if that's a "thousands upon thousands" chase with pitchforks.... If it's the latter though, I might have to be chased away with you.... That "a few pairs $500+" that I mentioned was my attempt at justifying her boots purchase without me sounding like I belong on the Shahs of Sunset. :$

I'm a Payless girl myself... with the exception of a few purchases at some low end place like Ross or Wal-Mart or Target. could never justify spending more than $30 on shoes and even then I try to stay in the teens. most expensive I've done would have to be last year's black friday sale at Bass for some long needed boots at 75% off (35 each).

although i wonder if monofins could technically be counted as footwear. hmm... lol

Time to get out the pitch forks....

Back when I was making 6 figures a year I thought nothing of dropping 500 on a pair of heels, but then again when you are trying to convince somebody to give your company a million plus contract, you don't want to look like a slob.

I miss those days.

I like to spend no more than $10 for Indian bridal slippers (khussas) hand embroider and bejeweled in India. Been buying them for 20 yrs!
Lately they're up to $39 due to trendiness

It really peeved me to spend $100 for leather riding boots when taking horseback riding lessons.

Would you wear them often? Or would you be embarrassed to wear them in public? That's the real deciding factor for me when I want expensive things that are a little different.

I tend to shop cheaply for shoes (I LOVE shoes) because I'm afraid of ruining them once I spend a ton of money on them. I scuffed up my favorite pair of nude pumps after only a few minutes of wearing them. But, if you're willing to spend the money, then do it! Do what makes you happy!

Hahaha! We would be chased with pitchforks for the same reason! And you and I both know there is no such thing as "free shoes". ;)

LOL, I am embarrassed about nothing. I am one of those shameless people who will dress as weird as possible just to make people state, LOL! I think I will be getting them, though.

I have also spent much moola on riding boots, but those things last through many, many a mucking, so I don't mind that!

I got a pair of new rocks, I think I paid £140 or so. That's really the most I've paid for a pair. I will be paying £80-100 for a pair of medieval long boots soon for both re-enactment and cosplay.

Several years back I spent about $350 on a pair of burgundy velvet Victorian boots which had a Louis heel also covered in velvet and laced up with black ribbons to the knee. Most beautiful shoes I've ever owned, and comfy as heck, they lasted 10 years of steady wear. No regrets.

But I wasn't a mom, and I was working good jobs, and I had no debt. So I could not/would not do that now.

Le sigh. I miss those boots. They were actually stolen out of my storage unit when I was out of state. The thives took about 500 DVDs and those boots.

I bought a pair of $100.00 dollar boots a few months ago and I would very willingly drop $70.00 for good tennis shoes. But then again, the arch in my left foot is higher than the arch in my right so I need them. All in all, though I'd say get them if you can afford them and use them because you love them. :)

I used to wear lolita (Japanese fashion- nothing to do with the book) and I think my most expensive shoes were $200. Even though I sold most of my loli, I still keep those shoes because I cannot bear to part with them. haha!

I once splurged on a pair of shoes that was way over my usual budget, but they were so worth it for the quality and comfort. It's amazing how the right pair can make a difference. For guys who want to find great deals without sacrificing quality, shoemall (https://shoemall.pissedconsumer.com/review.html) is a good place to check out. They often have a wide choice at pretty reasonable prices. Sometimes, it's okay to treat yourself!
