View Full Version : Think I could turn my wedding dress into a fairy gown?

I was thinking about putting this thread in making clothing/tops, but it isn't really mermaid related, so 'Just Talk!' it is!

As some of you might have noted in previous posts of mine, I suffered from a broken engagement last year after everything was all planned out (and paid for!). It was not worth it to sell back my $850 gown because I wouldn't get much money from it, so it is in my closet. Now, with my fairy/mermaid kids' entertainment biz in the works, I am thinking of trying to turn this into a fairy gown. Obviously I would have to take in the train, but I thought it might work. Any suggestions for what alterations I might make? Flowers? Lace? I am wondering if I could even maybe dye it. (Disclaimer: Yes, I realize the dress would probably get screwed up working with kids in it, but it's just yellowing in my closet right now and I wouldn't get more than a couple hundred bucks at most if I sold it).

My lovely gown:

Yeah girl! I say maybe don't dye it. But add some colorful flowers and maybe some leaves and stuff. And maybe you can use the fabric from the cut-off train to make some wings.

Here's a pretty white fairy!

If you don't like the white, you could also sew on some colored tulle to the skirt!

I'd add some chains and poof up the skirt a bit so that it becomes a rock outfit

Go for it! It would make an excellent fairy dress and just follow your instincts on the design

That would make an EPIC faerie dress....

And I will admit myself to having gone to thrift stores and buying damaged/yellowing wedding dresses to use for this same purpose when I was younger (younger, lol, when my boobs were actually normal-sized enough to fit into things without wasting time making massive alterations)

I think this is an awesome idea and a great way to use the dress so it doesn't go to waste! Also, I totally think you should dye it. Why not? Give it some cheerful splashes of color! Something I did for a faerie/nature goddess costume once was to get several different shades of green fabric dye and put them in spray bottles, then I sprayed the dress to give it a dappled pattern. I started with a gold-colored dress so it gave it the look of dappled sunlight on the forest floor. I also misted the fabric with water to dampen it so the splatters would look softer and blend better. Maybe try something like that with green and gold paint?

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

A spray bottle, Cyanea? That's bloody brilliant.

That's a great idea, and I can test it out on the train that I remove! I would like to give it some color simply so that when I get stuff on it (which I inevitably will) that it doesn't look too horrible. I think I shall have fun with this, LOL.
