Hey guys it's Jazz! I would just like to say that the fundraiser for Purple Rainbow Tails had raised $3000 !!! http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/purple-rainbow-tails-changing-the-world-one-tail-at-a-time/x/5272826 You guys rock! And for Mermaid Miel I will be creating a silicone mermaid tail because of her $1,000 donation!! I also will be making another tail after for my friend soon.

I will begin selling silicone mermaid tails in a little for a starting price of $800 for a basic design. The majority of the money will be donated to the Transkids Purple Rainbow Foundation http://www.transkidspurplerainbow.org/ to support transgender kids who aren't accepted by society. The rest will be used for the cost of the materials.

That being said, I began sculpting the traditional designs for Purple Rainbow Tails. Here are the designs-

16707

16708

16709

Which one is your favorite?

I've used monster makers clay, sculptex, and now I decided to use Le Beau Touche- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005VEK54Q/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=1535523722&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B005VLOQL2&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=05P3QWDN80QNEWYHB4XE

I LOVE it !!! It is my favorite of them all. It softens from the slightest heat exposure including the friction from rubbing your hands. I cooked it in the microwave and it became so soft ! I used a blow dryer after and it quickly softened up. It also smooth VERY nicely. It capture fine details as it hardens ( but doesn't become too hard ). I also used mineral spirits and a sponge to smooth it. A paint scraper was so useful as well for smoothing.

Here is the sculpture for the classic fluke design-

16710

It took only 2 hours to complete as the clay worked very well and there aren't many fine details. I like it though. I hope you guys do too!:D

Happy New Years ! AND Happy Holidays !!!!!

Awesome, Jazz! You know, you rock!

I also use a decorative glass blob to help smooth plasticine clay, works great!

congrats on all your progress! Don't sell yourself too short. I think your tails are good enough to go 900-1000$ at LEAST. Even if you're donating the money, you wanna make sure you always break even :)

I'm so proud of you girl!

I love them all! Though I've yet to see someone make a template for a round shape paddle tail. Like an uncut Wave or Rapid.

usually people extend past the edge of the rapid/wave. my fabric tail has a wave with a zip tie/gorilla tape extension. you do see round flukes in fabric tails quite often

Mermaid Jaffa

Oh I meant in a non fabric tail.

Anahita

I think the problem is the monofin - most silicone tails are also made with fiberglass monofins, so they don't have that "paddle" shape that the Wave/Rapid have. So you'd have to really cut down the monofin to get it into that shape.

Mermaid Wesley

Its totally possible to use a rapid or wave in a silicone or latex tail. people do it, but that shape isnt very popular, i think.

Anahita
03-30-2014, 09:58 PM
I know it's been done. I wasn't implying it can't be. But from a design standpoint, I think it's that the straps that aren't so popular - the Rapid, especially, has had a few problems with them.

So if you think about it that way, you don't want to risk monofin problems on a tail that's going to cost a few thousand dollars. It would suck to put all that effort and money in and then have the strap bulges or break occur. Unlike a neoprene or spandex tail, it's not so easy to get the monofin out and replace it in a silicone or latex tail. That's why the fiberglass monofins like the competitor are becoming increasingly popular (among other reasons, like you stated, the shape, too, is more popular than the "paddle" look.)

Mermaid Wesley
03-30-2014, 11:09 PM
Oh oh oh. OK. I honestly never considered straps being an issue. Hmmm. Thank you for the information :)

Mermaid Jaffa
03-30-2014, 11:31 PM
Oh. Looks like I will have to find a maker of paddle tails.

I know its not popular, but its my fave so far shape so far.

I have searched and looked at many tails over the internet. Out of all that I saw only one paddle tail and it was made with fabric.

Jazz could probably make you a paddle-fluked tail. She stated a while back at the beginning of this thread something about doing custom flukes.

Maybe that's something to inquire about. $2,000 is a really great price for a fully custom tail. And Jazz makes beautiful tails.

Thanks Anahita!

I thought Jazz made neoprene tails?

No silicone tail for me until I am one with the monofin and have a few years swimming experience.

Random questions, Jazz. Would any of your flukes accommodate the Mahina Merfin?
