howdy have been doing a bit of studying on tails. Seem a bit lost. For a beginner what is best? I am now in south texas would love to meet up with someone to learn more (male or female). I will be in san Antonio in april and Denver in june for the summer. I do travel and live in a fifth wheel.

Welcome to MerNetwork! I am still a beginner, also! I have a couple of fabric tails from Fin Fun (http://www.finfunmermaid.com/shop-mermaid-tails/adult-and-kids-mermaid-tails.html) and their monofin. One advantage for fabric tails is their portability - they fold down a lot smaller than a silicone or latex tail! Also, the Fin Fun monofin is very much a 'one size fits most' and is very comfortable to wear. It will not give you the propulsion of something like a Finis monofin, but it is only about $50, so not a large investment for someone just starting out, and as you improve and progress, you will have it as a loaner for friends/relatives (since it will fit just about any foot size!) There are many other manufacturers out there that make fabric tails - Aquatails, Magictails come immediately to mind - so check around and see what you think! You will find that we are a very chatty group, so pop into the chat room and get to know people! Always glad to see more mermen!! :D

I'm also a prospective merman, and I am leaning towards foxmoon productions tails. What sort of places are you planning on using your tail, and how often?

welcome!!

my first tail was a fabric tail, just to get started out. for a monofin i just laced two flippers together, so i knew it felt right before spending any money.

i think the first thing you should do is sketch out the tail you would like. just so you know where to begin.

there are a few sellers of fabric tails here, but if you or anyone you know has ever used a sewing machine (its seriously all just a straight line) i would look at the tutorials and make your own.

i hope you have a great time here! :D :D

just tried the new tail that arrived today from Germany. It was great although I do have to get used to using the monofin. It is completely different then a fin on each foot. Another thing I need to get used to is having my legs down one trouser. I felt like I was a hooligan walking down the street with my pants down below my but. When I checked things out the waist was always where it should be. I will swim with it the next few evenings then if I can get used to it I will get a more expensive tail. I did notice it is giving me a harder workout just kicking with the mono fin then a regular set of fins. But I sure did enjoy my time in the pool
