View Full Version : Midwest convention anyone?

Looking through the existing conventions, almost all of them are along the coasts. I'm thinking about starting up a convention here in the heart of the USA, Kansas City MO. Here in Kansas City, we have a surprising variety of great water attractions (great wolf lodge, oceans of fun, schlitterbhan, among smaller indoor water parks such as coco keys), hotels are cheap, everything's close to our major airport, and since it's in the Midwest, it will not only be more accessible to more people, but costs of travel will be cheaper than traveling to the coasts. (Unless of course you're already along that coast). I wanna know what you all think! Might this be something you would go to? What all would you want to experience in this convention? I would want this to be an event that brings together the merpeople from all over and be a great experience we can have fun with and bond over.

I would absolutely attend a Midwest convention. Somewhere on the Great Lakes like Chicago would be ideal, but I would go to Kansas City, too.

I am game. Do we want to host one this upcoming year? IT would have to be during the summer if we want to be outdoors, otherwise I bet we could find a waterpark somewhere in teh midwest that would love to host us.

Do we want to start with a meetup and move up to a convention? Do any o you midwest mers know how to organize one or do any of our costal convention merfriends want to let us know the best way to go about adding another convention to the community?

Someone who has time and good planning skills should probably take charge! *nose goes*

Yeah, have to agree with you on that.
Anyone fit the criteria?

Oh, Chicago? I'm totally in! Who's Chicago local? My soon-to-be hubster (getting married in May *squee*) has tons of experience putting together Cons and Faires (he did the Las Vegas Ren Faire for a time), but we're a 4 hour drive away from Chicago. If someone is on the ground, there, hubster and I can lend our skillz from afar on how to throw one of these shindigz. But we need someone there that can maybe put out a smiling face, pound some pavement and press a little flesh. lol

omg. . . did I totally just sound like schmoozy "I've owned and ran too many businesses" woman there for a bit? *headdesk*
Someone please stop me.
I'm running on so little sleep, right now. . .

I'm about 45 minutes away on a good traffic day, but I'm in college so I'm not an ideal choice!

Lookie what I found - Chicago pool eye candy. Sure, one is the Four Seasons, but we can dream, can't we?

Personally, I like the InterContinental - looks like it's big enough and has more of a "mer feel" to the pool. lol Though we're looking at like $200 a night for the rooms without any sort of group discount. Priced November and December, quickly.

Chicago sounds nice, but what about the Wisconsin Dells? there are loads of hotels, water parks, and if we do it in the winter, the tourist season is over! No tourists to harrass us!

We are currently planning an August meetup in WI Dells for the Great Lakes pod so that might help to get our feet wet with how the local hotels & etc. react. One thing I do know, since I live not too far from there, is that the costs for EVERYTHING in the Dells goes way down during the winter months. However, there are many waterparks that are also closed during the winter, so this convention would have to happen at one of the indoor waterparks if it were moved there. I can post some photos and info after we have our meetup in August.
IF this were held in WI Dells I would definitely be there! Unfortunately, I can't travel if it means having to be away from home overnight, so other locations I would just have to drool and watch the pics posted by those who could attend. Chicago might be a possibility for a short stop in but I wouldn't be able to stay long.
Wherever this is held, I think a Midwest convention is an awesome idea! We freshwater mers are in need of such a thing! :-)

I'm from Texas, so to me all of that is just plain NORTH. Yankees, yankees, everywhere. ;)

Most reports of which states qualify as "the midwest" pretty much include the same states...

WI and MN would definitely qualify as north (northern midwest) but they don't, by any means, qualify as "west", lol. As for IL, they don't necessarily qualify as North, either, lol.
