Swimming when someone sees you...

So, this year I'm going to start swimming in a tail (I'll create my fabric tail soon, until I'll do a silicone one) and I feel really excited about it :)
But there's a "problem": luckily I live in a seaside little town so I know where I can do it, but I am not sure about people on the beach who can see me :/ nobody here knows about mermaiding and I don't want to feel weird for them >.<
What to do/say if this happens?

If it's obvious the people asking "what the hell are you doin" are intolerant jerks, I usually say I'm practicing dolphin kick, and I found the monofin look ugly so I wear an extra fancy one.

If it's decent-looking people, or young girls who don't make a show of trying to burst my eardrums with forced moronic loud laughter, I usually tell the truth (aka, being an aquatic performer with mermaid a part of the repertoire) :)

Well, no more problems: my parents (I just talked to them) won't give me the permission to go swimming in a tail where people could see me, but they let me take swimming lessons in a pool. I think this prepares me better! :D

Mermaid Claudia there a lot of Mers out there who have thought the same thing a we have come to think "who cares". If people don't like it then they can go pound salt. It is not for them to believe bt only you an tha is all that matters. It i on how you feel an what you like to do. If they dont like itthen they don't have to look.

i can fel the problems too, usally when we do a fursuit event we look before the location,
in your kind maybejust go out swimm with a monofin, and look, next step organize the performance, maybe 2 good friends, a spotter and security
and someone who fixes the spot, makeup and acessories.
Great idea is to come togther with a other costumer o he mermaid and make a performance.
in the case of the own village and first apearance i suggest to look for a diferent location. european quit good to give you the shelf in the wardrobe as freak - may not good thave that at first - later you setup all you stil can say hello i'm mermaiding or do marketing maybe a photostand for a charity object whenyour villge has kind of ocean fest.

OP I feel the same way!!! I want to go to the beach with my tail this summer but I would be self conscious about the fact that I am certain such a spectacle will naturally draw a crowd! I want to do it for me and for fun. I really wish I had a private beach so I would not have to turn my intended day of adventure and fun at the beach into an unintentional publicity stunt.

I too am wondering how people will react when they see a 15 year old boy in a pool with a tail, hahaha my brother says I will accidentally hit people with my giant fluke.

Own it. Swim with confidence and joy and don't care what anyone thinks. You will regret every time you worried about it and did not swim in it. People's perception is not your problem. Believe me. :)

I know, but my parents won't leave me do this anymore -_-' if I want to do mermaiding, I must do it in events or similiar. Yes, I'm going to start taking swimming lessons so this summer I can work as a mermaid. I hope to be able to do it :$
