(Pssst - please let me know if these images are huge, I couldn't resize them but will try and fix it if it's not working! Thanks!)

I decided to try my hand at making some mer-inspired shoes for when I need my legs ;) I started with a pair of cheap canvas shoes (walmart, $5) that had a failed project on it.

Then I started layering sequins down onto outdoor mod podge.

I now have one shoe all scaled up!

Working on the other right now. I know I want to put knotted rope/hemp/something on the outer seam lines, but I don't know what to do for the rest of the shoe. Leave it plain? Glitter it? Paint it a matching color? Cover in lines of rope/cord? I just don't know!

I like the rope idea :) I would leave the rest either unpainted or painted a coordinating color :) maybe add some little starfish to it :D

Thank you both!

Ooo I like that idea :) I also picked up some tinnnyyyy seashells from the beach a while ago, I was thinking of seeing if I could add maybe one on the corner or something, but I dunno how sturdy that would be. Great ideas :) I'm also leaning towards a solid color the more I work on them (either a color or leaving it white).

I'd definitely say paint them, either a matching color, or sandy/tan looking. They look awesome already though!

Instead of rope that might be too bulky, how about using that brown hemp twine? I see it at the dollar store all the time and use it on lots of stuff.

I thought your Adventure Time artwork looked great!

I wanted to braid the hemp twine or square knot it or something so it's not just..... hemp twine, lying there, haha. Thanks for the advice :) & thanks! The artwork wasn't what ruined the shoes.... the fabric markers I used bled a lot on the canvas, and I couldn't fix it. Oh well. Old AT shoes breathe life into new oceany shoes!

Edited to add update: Finished with sequins! We'll see about the hemp twine & maaaaybe paint tomorrow!

Those are cute! Makes me want to give it a whirl :) You should update later on how the modge podge holds up (please)!

Yeah, I like the sandy paint idea and braided hemp. You could braid cowrie shells into the hemp too! These shoes look sooo snazzy! You could totally sell these types of shoes on etsy or something if they age well, I'd certainly buy them :)

I'd love to see PearlieMae's amazing scales on something like this! Love the way they look, I may have to try and make a pair for summer wear! Maybe some snippets of fishing net and/or plastic aquarium greenery to go with the hemp twine?

Thanks everyone! I decided to go with a light beigeish color.... Fantastic idea, so thank you for that! Here's how they're shaping up so far... the color's a little off, they're lighter and... peachier in reality.

Look so cool! You could also do some clear modge podge and sprinkle some sand over the peach color :/
