Hi! You could possibly have little shells, gems, marbles or shiny stones to give to the children. I know that some stores sell replica/dried starfish. Maybe a few educational printouts? Whatever you choose, I hope your parties go great.

I think it depends on your audience. If it's a girls party, maybe some plastic ponybeads and alphabet beads with strings so they can make bracelets/necklaces? Go to the dollar store or craft store and add a few little shells(they're sold in bulk packets). Messages in bottles?

Oriental Trading Co (http://www.orientaltrading.com) has loads of mermaid/ocean/beach baubles. As for edibles, Candy Warehouse (http://www.candywarehouse.com/) has a plethora of ocean/fish/shell related candies.

Maybe some merfolk and pirate costuming items, like inexpensive seashell hair clips or eye patches? Also some fish scale temporary tattoos might be cool.

What activities do you do with the kids? Do you do any crafting type stuff? You could have shells and starfish that the kids then customize during the party.

Be careful of getting things that could be a choking hazard, especially with the smaller kids!

What about instead of Chinese takeout boxes? You could have a pail and shovel to hold things in? Or treasure boxes from the dollar store?

I use Oriental Trading Co. for about 75% of my party bags that I bring when I'm hired to do stuff. It's a really neat and useful company, and kids love their stuff. The other 25% is my own secret "look at the awesome I stumbled upon" because I have a habit of finding odds and ends that I love, then I stock up on them, and they lay in wait for the perfect time to be rehomed.

Word of warning with the candy - I ask parents before bringing bags with candy in them for the kids, especially for food allergies. So many kids nowadays are super allergic to stuff it seems, and to keep me safe, my contracts that I make the people who hire me sign do have a disclaimer that I'm not liable if a kid is allergic, gets ill, chokes, etc. as I've done my best to accommodate, but since I didn't make the food myself, and cannot watch the kid while they consume the candy I cannot personally guarantee anything.

And then I make sure ALL THE CANDY IS PREPACKAGED/INDIVIDUALLY PACKAGED. Because I feel like the moment I open it, even if it's to distribute it in smaller quantities, suddenly I may become a sue-able variable. So...

I know that sounds paranoid, but it's best to take precautions - the reason why is because if something bad happens to someone's kid, they're going to be hurt, upset, distraught, and looking for someone responsible over it. Their kid is usually the focal point of their life, and you don't want to be on the blame-end of an ordeal because their kid choked, or had to go to the hospital and get a shot because of the stuff you brought.

My fave thing from Oriental Trading Co. Is the shell whistles, and the real shell leis... I'm super-weird with plastic and especially as a mermaid, I try to limit the amount of "new plastic" I use or give to others. I've been having a fun look through their selection of natural-materials products, I had to bookmark some for when I get a gig :D

I won't even touch my views on candy, I can get kind of scary then :P
