Look what I just found when I was browsing around. The Ring Lord now has polycarbonate scales, which are 40% lighter than their aluminium counterparts :)

They are a little under and inch by a little more than half an inch, and with overlap, I estimate you are going to need around $500 worth for a tail!

That's a lot of money Pearlie. I'm sure though that if someone wants to have a tail like that though they are more than willing to put that much money into it :)As for me, I've got other ideas in mind ^_^

Are they light enough to swim with?

The plastic should be light enough but you will want to be a strong swimmer I've worn scalemail made by them before. Both the regular and the aluminum were heavier then they looked. With the size of a tail & the number of links needed for connections and the number of scales there is a possibility of it being heavier then you would think. Though I suppose if you stitched them on instead of connector rings that would eliminate a lot of weight.

I think they'd be cool for accessories at least! I saw those and want to order some so bad, but hubby is still holding off on his Ring Lord order until he can figure out all he needs for his current chainmail and scalemail projects. *wiggles impatiently*

Why not make a scale mold and make your own resin scales? You can save a of money if you have the time to make them by yourself? Goo idea?

Yeah I was considering sewing them onto neoprene.

I wanted to do that with these, it think it would look really cool. I think I'm going to leave silicone to the professionals tho. lol

I just found out that they make other colors now as well even glow in the dark ones. Maybe I will get a few and sew them onto a bra or something to keep it lighter then with all the extra rings

i dont think you could use them to put directly on a tail but maybe for a scale mold

I read that as The Lord of the Rings.

Then I tried to remember the scene that that couldv have been in. Only to reread the first post again, and found out I failed.

I found somebody that knits them into their knitting pattern. http://craftymutt.blogspot.co.uk/p/learn-to-knit-with-scales.html
Dunno how good that will work though for a tail, maybe for a dry tail it would be fine

I have done the exact same thing no less than four times when checking new posts.
