Well since we had so much fun the first time we decided to do it again. Merfest will be in Cary, North Carolina again and will be from Jan 2 - 4, 2015. We have Thom Shouse, Mermaid Malena and Bob from the Mermaid Portfolio Workshop, John Jay and other joining us for this event. Please check out www.ncmerfest.com for tickets and program information.

I'm hoping I'll be able to go this time. I guess it all depends on whether or not my fiance is getting his masters or getting a job, and where he's getting either of those things.... Going to and from CA to NC is way easier than going to and from Canada to NC.

Im so there again! My first time being a real mermaid with my first mermaid tail, made for me by my husband! and to have had the opportunity to meet all these wonderful mermaid/mermen family was awesome in itself, but to have met and dined with Thom Shouse was the icing on the cake! im still on a Merfest high!

If we did a Merfest in California, it should be in Santa Barbara - that's a very pretty, ALMOST halfway point between SF and SD, so both SoCal and NorCal mers could easily make it.

I agree with Raina on this. My gf may not be a mertender, but when she was there she even had a blast an can't wait till the next Merfest.

I am tentatively planning on going, since I only live about 30-45 minutes away from Cary, NC! Although I have only known about mermaiding for a few weeks, I would love to meet other mermaids. It's really dependent right now on whether I can make my tail before then though. I wouldn't be able to stand it if I went and I couldn't swim in a tail with all the other mermaids..

Ok some cool news!! I have $512 cash saved up as of tonight! Actually more than that because I have a jar of coins I need to cash, but 512 in bills and dollar coins! I've only been saving for three ish months! And my mom owes me a hundred that I lent her too and that's going in the savings box as soon as I get it. Aaand I got a paper pay check and I've decided to take out 100 from that too. That's over 700! I'm getting there! Also I'm thinking that if I can scrounge up the funds I may bring a friend of mine with me ^w^ but that's still a long shot. Anyways I wanted to share my excitement!

I am so happy you might come! Don't worry if you dont have a tail, a lot of people didnt last time and some people brought multiples and shared or took turns with their tails. If you're able to get yourself even a fabric one just so you can enjoy while you're waiting- many of them did that. But don't let it deter you from coming. There is lots to do and lots of people shared tails :) I know christomer is bringing a few of his to share around <3 I tried one this weekend and it actually fit me because of the stretch, just came up to my boobs hahaha

MERFEST TO MAKE PRINT AND FILM
We have a independent filmmaker that will be coming down from Canada to do a documentary film about merfolk and Merfest in January. We also have an independent photographer and author who is doing a book about unique conventions and has contacted us about adding Merfest to the book. Does anyone want to share a room for NC Merfest 2015? It's 99/night. I'll be checking in on the 1st and out on the 5th. I'm a vendor this year, so our room might have our inventory in it until I can set up our booth. Otherwise, I'm a clean and organized person, non-smoking, not bringing any pets, and an all-around great roommate. I'm not a morning person, but I'll sleep through any noise you make, guaranteed. Most at the $99/night rate are 1 bed, true, but there are other hotels with 2 beds for less but a bit further away. I have one person interested in roadtripping from Texas with me, and she's okay with Motel 6, 2 beds with fridge and microwave for $40/night. I'm just seeing who is interested and in what- cheapest but safe is best! :-p

You don't necessarily need a tail, you have a couple months to save up. No one to go with? And? Don't know anybody? Don't worry, there are people to meet everywhere (what are we? Chopped tuna?). Your boyfriend isn't coming? He's going to be so sad he is missing such a cool time!

My biggest problem now is that my boyfriend doesn't want me to go if he can't go with me. He's about to get a better job than the one he has, so he won't have vacation time until then, and since I don't have any mer friends that are his definition of friends, he's basically saying he won't let me go. He thinks someone will be an internet edator and ask me to go, then I'll get hurt. He doesn't know what kind of people we are. But I guess that's that. I'll just have to see you all in 2016 if we even have a Merfest then.

I am going! Unfortunately my tail will not be ready so I will be wearing my cloth one :( I hope everyone understands. I was talking to finfolk and they will all be there I am excited to meet other mermaids and mermen. I do however have one problem. ....I dont have enough for a room for the whole time. I am struggling with the idea of putting it all on my credit card (which scares me because I've never had that kind of debt before), or staying home and putting my money toward my next tail project.
I actually think I'm scared that I'll get out there, and something will go wrong, and I'll be hundreds of miles away from my family, or that I won't be able to afford the check in for my tail at the airport, the hotel, or food, or tickets to the things I'll want to do like the John Jay class and and stuff like that....:biting nails:

New question: the preferred hotel is a 1 hour walk or 10 minute drive from the convention itself. Not really worth renting a car, but I don't want to walk in a NC winter carrying my tail for an hour each way. Is anyone interested in renting a car and sharing it or carpooling? Anyone know if NC Merfest will have a shuttle service?

You have to buy your tickets before December 15th, and you better check with the hotel now, because there is another group coming in as well, and I think it's almost totally booked. The group rate for merfest is closed, so it's probably going to be more expensive, as well. Julz may still have room in her room (I remember they were looking for roomies to split up the cost.) You should hurry!

Merfest never happened for me. It never would have.... the sheer cost of it alone for me (I travel with my fiance and daughter of course) is beyond ability. and then there is the fact that I am the source of income in my family... to be totally honest, merfest would cost me about $600 to possibly $1K to attend after ALL the expenses are taken into account.... :/
Which is terribly depressing, because as a creator and designer I would have loved to be a vendor BUT I don't see that as profitable at the event... and thats just me being honest here.

It costs us 3k last year. I was supposed to be reimbursed last year as a guest speaker but instead that happened this year with being reimbursed half, and then gifted with a camera (appreciated but wasnt the original agreement) this year cost 1.5k and ive had to put it all on credit card and used the 1.5 repayment to pay for the other half.

All people can really do is plan plan plan. I do feel like some people are being a bit over the top with their complaining about it though expecting handouts... Its hard for everyone it is just frustrating to always see certain people get so rude and entitled.

I'm sorry for anyone who didn't get a chance to attend. But there will always be events I think :) hopefully melu you'll get to something else. I know it is hard I am the only income earned too and while I don't have kids my medical expenses are through the roof

Instead of one big, end all be all convention, what about little mini-ones at someone's home or a free lake throughout months in different locations? Or, declare a mer-day, and that's the day local pods organize a series of events- whatever they can. Maybe just a meet up and swim, or an environmental education program outreach, or for those who are organized with several members- they can offer photography sessions and classes for each other and the public at large. It's not as good for vendors who love big crowds (as do sponsors), but it would allow for a wider reach, little to no travel costs, and keep it small and simple as the mer community grows in a grass roots kind of way.

I think the whole point of the big convention is that it functions differently than a meet-up and swim. There's a lot of us who already have regular meet-ups and swims, and while that's nice, it's really not the same as having a big event to look forward to where you get to meet your mer-friends from all over the country/from other countries. There's an atmosphere that's missing with the small things that is there with the big ones.

Like, I used to love Steampunk (I won't get into why I don't anymore), and it was fun to do it with friends for small local things like going to museums, and meet-ups at tea shops and absinthe bars, or going to concerts, but nothing compares to getting to go to a convention. You get to see people you are normally too far away to see, and see in-person and then buy things from vendors instead of ordering them and wondering. This was really like our ComicCon (sorry I jumped genres there, but I've been out of Steampunk so long that I can't actually think of a big huge international Steampunk thing that draws people like Comicon does).

Local meets are great, but I'm never going to get to meet, say, Arion or Raina, in person, at a local meet the way I would at Merfest. It's not really feasible for any of us without a huge Con to bring us together.

Most conventions lose money for at least the first five years. I used to help coordinate the International Music & Media Conference, the New Music Seminar, and all the Real Estate Media conferences. Eventually, they all turned into huge cons, but the first few years of each one was a struggle. It's not cheap, but eventually they pay off big for the organizers.

Also, not sure if this is possible but cons usually do better in bigger cities... more advertising, more local people. On that same note, local sponsors could be persuaded to invest with the pitch that as the con grows it will bring more people/more income to the city, and in exchange for sponsorship be given a free vend spot, increasing the vending area?

It would also help (I'm sure Raina would be the most knowledgable about this kind of thing) to turn it into an actual business venture- maybe even a non-profit- so much of the cost can be written off on taxes and the like?

I dunno, just thinking. It's such a cool thing to have and it'd be sad to see it go.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul area would actually be a great place for a mermaid convention. I just don't know who here would be able to organize it. I have the experience - was actually Artistic Director for a national puppetry festival and on staff for several regional fests, back in the day. But I absolutely would not have the time or stamina to take on a leading role in convention organizing at this point in my life. Be happy to advise/help, if anyone around here wanted to take it on. But I can't be at the helm. No, no, no ,no, never again.
