Metal grating for scales

So, for my future silicone tail, I think I won't make a scale pattern like many mers do. I'm going to put a metal grating on the clay, for saving time and space (and maybe money!). So, what do you suggest me about this method?

When I make a silicone tail I will have to remember that

I read about it in ALEX Plus latex tail tutorial, but I think it works even on clay ;)
