Whoa cool they would probably have issues sticking in the water

The only issue I could see would be it matching the owner's skin tone. (I'm always to light for everything, including the vast majority of makeup). You could get latex based paint and paint it yourself though, I suppose. Foundation certainly wouldn't work for water wear.

Those are awesome! And so convincing.

If I had fx skills, I'd make myself a pair of ribgills.

Oh man, It'd be awesome to combine these with some sort of webbed finger prosthetics.

Liquid latex and paper towels ^.^ We made scars that way in one of my Theatre Makeup classes. Then spirit gum :D

I know there is a way to make prosthetics really easily (and cheaply) from gelatin (like, the kind you buy to make preserves) but I have no idea how it would hold up in water. My brilliant boyfriend says that he thinks prosthetics made this way would be ok in water, just degrading faster than actual latex or what have you. Worth a try, in any case.

Mermaid Pandorah: Yes! That would be so cool! I read somewhere that humans would need gills the size of our lungs to breathe underwater like fish, so rib gills would be totally appropriate, not to mention accurate!

From a quick internet search, there seems to be two general ways of making latex prosthetics: making a mold and painting them onto the person and letting them dry.
Here's a source for the liquid latex, and they also sell glue and paints. http://www.fxwarehouse.info/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=FW&Product_Code=FLX1&Category_Code=RD407
Just in case someone wanted to try it out. ^_^

I buy from this guy all the time!
I have two pairs of elf ears from him.
He also sells this stuff called spirit glue, I don't know how it would hold in water, but it's very, very strong.
He also sells paints/makeup to paint them and it works very well, again I don't know how it would work in water, but in the rain the color doesn't seem to come off.

I saw someone wearing these at the renaissance festival :'D
They looked really cute~

I;m sure they'd stay underwater, just so long as you applied them correctly
and let the adhesive dry well enough!

These are actually a pretty badass pair, they're just a bit more expensive xD

I think he provides this things known as soul stick, I don't know how it would keep in water, but it's very, very powerful. He also provides paints/makeup to color them and it performs very well, again I don't know how it would perform in water, but in the rainfall along with doesn't seem to come off.

What kind of adhesive do you use Tideborn? I'd really like to make some mermaidy latex prosthetic pieces. :D

To anyone thinking of making your own, it really is as easy as most tutorials make it look. xD And there are looooads of tutorials out there for it.

I don't know about Psychic Tideborn, but I was instructed to use Prosaid for anything underwater by the people who make the gills and the ears. However if you are doing a dry event Spirit gum is cheaper and will likely work as well.

@Nyx its called spirit gum and most Halloween stores sell it. Its a prosthetic adhesive and I've heard it holds up under water too. Dive bar mermaids use it to stick on jewels

Thanks Sephina. I've already got spirit gum for my dry land latex pieces. :) And I'd heard of Prosaid, but didn't know anyone who had used it. I hate buying stuff without knowing much about it, you know? I'm going to have to go ahead and test out the spirit gum underwater, see how it does.

If you're going to buy from Aradani they sell Spirit Gum as well. Make it easier, get them all together. :)

I'd like real gills for sure!

Those, however, look a bit nasty. Like a big, horrible scar or something :(

I've used spirit gum on some ear prosthetics and swam. They stayed on no problem. :-) just make sure you do it right.

gahh i want gills. It would be nice if they made rib gills too though.

I was thinking the same thing. :/ id far rather have gills on the ribs, which are closer to where my actual lungs are as opposed to ones the are located on the neck, i would just be concerned with too much friction against the prosthetics on the ribs from movement in the water with my arms and elbows and stuf

I'm thinking both, but it'll be neck gills for the first go of it. :)
