Are there any other overweight mers out there? I suppose since swimming is such good exercise, anybody who does enough of it wouldn't stay overweight, but maybe some people started out overweight when they first got into mermaiding?

I'm overweight myself but have been working hard to lose my pot belly. :) The extra body fat though helps keep me warm though swimming through the cold waters here in Scotland. :rollover:

I know when Little Orka (http://mernetwork.com/index/member.php?130-Little_Orca) aka Merlissa the Mermaid started (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Merlissa-the-Mermaid/219143271465322) mermaiding, I believe she said she was over 300lbs. I'm wanting to say as of this year she's lost about half of her weight! She never let her weight hold her back from loving mermaiding, and for that I know she inspired a lot of mermaids not to let that be a factor either! She's been an inspiration in a lot of different ways, really :) She was one of the first people to put out detailed tutorials on tail making and painting, and showed everyone that fabric tails can be very beautiful and realistic too! She's a beautiful person, inside and out.

I'm a curvy mer, 185, and I'm an older mer...I turned 54 last Saturday, and I have never felt more comfortable in my body since I was a child. If there is one thing I can say from this time in my life, it's to say please don't waste time hating your body! Seriously! I'm strong as I was when I was a gymnast in high school, and my boyfriend - whom I outweigh by a good 25 pounds - loves how I feel when he holds me. Love who you are inside!

Also, I kind of feel like I have no right post here but.. I'm about 20lbs overweight myself. My doctors love to remind me of that when I come in -_- At least shooting underwater is slimming ;P

Something not very many people know about me: I was once over weight, but now I'm not. Its not an impossible condition to reverse, it just takes effort, sacrifice, and will power. One thing for certain; swimming has given me more definition than any activity I've ever done. I have visible ab definition that I credit to swimming. Mermaiding is a great way to shed the pounds and develop muscle! If there are any mers in your area, schedule lots of mer meets! Swimming with other mers motivates you to swim longer and harder than you normally would alone. :) In the end though, do what makes you happy!

Iona, thank you for mentioning Merlissa "Little Orka", because when I first found out about mermaiding a few years ago I didn't think it was something I could do until I saw videos by Little Orka on youtube. She looked so beautiful in the water, it was like size meant nothing and I was absolutely inspired. She's the reason I figured I could do it, too, though I didn't know who she was or that her size had changed since I hadn't been able to find those videos again. I got a bit worried when I joined the forum and saw so many people that I would consider thin or of moderate size that I would be the only plus-size, as Mandi corrected me, mer on the site. I was also surprised to learn that I'm not the only bad swimmer looking to improve, but I really shouldn't be since a love of the water is really the only requirement, if that. ^_^ Thanks, everyone!

I'm overweight, but I'm slowly working on fixing that and I'm hoping mermaiding will play a big part.

Same here, I'm about 30lbs or so over the weight I want to be (I refuse to weight myself and get depressed over a number), but lately I've really been making an effort to exercise more, not just swimming. My new rule is to go for a walk every day and if I don't walk then I can't have any Girl Scout cookies! I'm being good and sticking with the serving size, too. :p Thin Mints make a good carrot to dangle, so to speak. I really want to loose that weight by June, when I'll be cosplaying at A-Kon as Princess Aquata (one of Ariel's sisters) and I know people are going to be taking my picture. Swimming, walking, doing short sets of squats every day, hopefully it will all add up!

I'm currently running about 25-30 pounds overweight for my frame. Sometimes I think it's an age/metabolism thing, since I eat about the same as I ever did, but then I really compare my activity between now and when I was younger, and I see the problem, lol.
I don't let the muffin top my tail gives me bother me, though. I'm charmingly plump, haha.

I've been big all my life, and wanted to be a mermaid since before I could walk.. but never until I found the body-positivity movement a few years ago did I EVER dream I could actually BE a real mermaid. I saw the mers at Weeki Wachee at 16 or so, and -desperately- wanted to join their ranks, but didn't think they'd ever take a plus-size mer- even one that could sing and act, and already swim w/her legs together. So finding Joy Nash's videos and later, the body pos. movements literally changed my life, and gave me the first inklings of confidence that I could indeed be a mer. And now, it's only been in the past few weeks that I got my first tail and have been mermaiding publicly. Thanks to a remarkable mer n my area I was given the gift of the opportunity to mer in public, and I gotta say, she's literally given me my dream. This is something I deeply wish I'd pursued as a kid, or a teen, or even as a young adult, and now, I NEVER plan on stopping, no matter -what- my size. It gets a little disheartening at times, but mers like Iona, Merlissa and other supporters of mers regardless of size keep me going, as does this whole, magical experience. Thank you guys for posting. It's great to know that there are other merfolk out there who truly "get it." ^_^ ♥♥
