BTW, there's a lot of cool stuff you can do without tails. Some of the people in the SoCal area are getting together to go to the aquarium as a group later this month, and people in the San Francisco area are doing that too. I strongly recommend going to the aquarium with mers in your area, especially while the weather is still too cold to swim outdoors in most places.

Because I didn't use it enough. I spent $200 on my tail a year and a half ago. I swam in it three times I think? And that was it. It was just sitting in my closet because I don't have a neighborhood pool, a hotel pool, or a friend that would let me use their pool. The only pool I have access to is one I used to work at and not only would that be weird, it's not allowed there. So I sold it to Fifi so she could use it for her mermaid camp/school/program. Now people who want the opportunity to swim as a mermaid can have it :) And my tail won't be collecting dust in the closet.

While I'm working on a fabric tail, it is slow work (I've been saving up fabric bits for MONTHS now, and I'm sewing it entirely by hand as my sewing machine is dinky). Also, I have no monofin, just a cardboard-and-water-shoes mockup until I can afford a monofin :p I've gotten to borrow Morticia's monofin twice to practice with, though, and it was so much fun :D

So, I'm kind of tail-less. I'm in a weird, in between tail and legs stage, kind of like a snake haha.

I'm kind of jealous! I've spent the better part of the last year and a half trying to design my perfect tail, and I can't seem to settle on any aspect of it! Fluke shape, dorsal fins, markings... XD I can't even settle on the colors! One day I want it blue, then red, then green... Designing the tail is practically the hardest part for me! :P

I wonder if a thermochromic paint would be best for you then?
It's a pigment that changes colors depending on temperature. (Like ... a child's Mood ring, or the paint job on someone's car that changes when it rains because the rain is cold, etc.)

Although I have no idea how you would incorporate such a paint.
I think it's safe with some plastics (considering it's used often in mood rings?) But I have no idea XD

Not sure what to say about the rest of the aspects, fins and fluke design could be tied into another aspect of your life that you really enjoy?
For example I chose the Lyretail fish because of it's relation to an aspect of life I highly enjoy. I don't really feel like picking other fluke types or designs because I'm content with the meaning it carries (for me). If you really like insects you could create a butterfly fin design or something? Or if you like dragons, or bats, or vampires, go with sort of a winged look? Etc.
The bottom line... If you hold something dear in life, try to incorporate it into your tail.

Well, I've been wanting it to look kind of wing-y, since I'm also really passionate and obsessed with birds, but drawing it out, it's been difficult to get it to look right. XD

And the thermochromic paint is actually a really awesome idea! Maybe not for the whole tail, but for certain markings or accents... Ohman, that could actually look really pretty if done right! You're a genius! <3

It may sound silly but it might be an idea to find an artist you can commission and collaborate with on a design C: I have a few friends who are helping me with most aspects of my tail and I'm picking and choosing and redesigning. That is one bonus with the amount of time it takes to save for a tail: You have all that time to perfect your design!

Some of us don't have tails because we can't afford it, but quite a few of us also don't have the because we can't really use them. I try to live a minimal life, and owning a tail makes little sense to me when it would hardly get use. If I ever live near a place I could, that might change. What won't change is that I've got a tail in my soul, and that's something I can say for all of us ;) Nobody can take that tail away from you!
