it's such a shame, you can always see the monofin! in every single tail he makes, I used to like his tails but now...

Yeah, and that's a pretty strong show of the fluke. But I'm glad it's so obvious in the pics, anyone bidding knows it's prominent.

MerAnthony

I don't care if you see the monofin or not, an I really don't think that people are going to look that close anyway, But if they weren't so expensive I would have one in less than a heart beat.

The visible mono-fin really doesn't bother me that much. It's such a pretty tail!

In this one it looks like the corners of the monofin were coming out of the fluke and possibly repaired.....

deepblue

Oh wow... that does look like they poked right through. Yikes. So that's the repair she mentioned.

Jessica
02-10-2014, 08:41 PM
Even with the monofin showing and the repair, it's still a lovely tail! I really love purple and the purple ridges on the fluke remind me of my first tail :)

i love thin flukes because they look more flowy (and are light enough to lift over your head!) but there really has to be an absolutely perfect balance to get a thin flowy look and not show the monofin. It isn't easy!

deepblue

I do like the fluke, myself. Pretty colors and it looked really great on her in the pics posted above. But it's for sure for the person who doesn't mind the fluke showing. Some people don't seem to notice, for some of us it's the first thing we see.

My fluke looks pretty good, you can see the monofin only if you look for it.

Everytime he makes a new tail on his facebook page, I can't help myself, I always look at the fluke immediatly

He HAS to stop saving on silicone. It doesn't make sense. No mer on his/her right mind (If I may say, no offence) shouldn't pay more than 2 or 3k for these tails. We shouldn't have to tell to the kids the usual excuse "you have bones for your legs, this is the bone of my fluke".

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way. My eyes went straight to the fluke and I freaked out hubby by screaming "WHY ERIC!!! WHY!?!?!?!?!?!?!"

Thats pretty much how it happened. But he came over (eventually) pointed at the fluke and asked why it looked funny (he's used to me looking at ravens tails). So there, I have my non mer guy looking at his tails and seeing the big bad monofin sticking out and recognising the crappy work.

(For reference he and I have never discussed visible monofins before)

Yes true you can see the monofin but I believe that was one of his earlier works in tails. I have seen alot of tails from different makers an there has been alot of improvement over time. We all learn from our mistakes to improve quality an durablity. So even though this tail has had some repairs I really don't think to many people are going to sit down an really look at the fluke for a close inspection. An if they do they can say that it was caught on a hook or something.

Well said :) I honestly think it's one of those things where people(including kids) who have never seen a tail before up close would never notice. I had to repair my first tail and no one has ever asked about it.....and it looks bad to me in some places! Personally I really don't like the monofin to show, but this is a used tail and a good deal for someone who can't afford to buy a new silicone tail at full price. It's not a perfect tail, but it's still pretty and looked beautiful on in pictures!

Anyway.....I think maybe we should consider that someone is going to buy this tail and hopefully love it and love being a mermaid.....and hopefully that someone will join our community too :) I just know that if I saw this tail, fell in love with the colors, and bought it only to find out later that the thread advertising it was full of comments on how bad it was.....I would feel bad (and I think the mermaid selling it would too.....how would you honestly feel if everyone commented on how bad your tail looked?) I totally understand that the majority of us don't like the monofin showing, but let's remember that mermaid tails are like babies.....moms love their babies.....even if they aren't perfect! Getting a realistic mermaid tail is a dream come true, so please let's not ruin it for someone else.

I'm not trying to stir up drama, I just want everyone to realize that this has happened before in a thread with one of Eric's tails and it made the mermaid (who was so excited to get her tail and loved it) feel really bad---and unwelcome. There's nothing wrong with pointing out that you don't like the monofin showing and critiquing an artist's work, but I really just don't want another mermaid to feel unwelcome here. It's a fine line, but I really think it's more important to consider how another mermaid might feel in this case than to make a point about Eric's work.

And just for the record....I've never met Eric, never talked to him, never even seen one of his tails in person so don't think I'm just some mertailor fan/defender....I'm not, I just really just don't want this to become a community where mermaids/mermen have to feel bad/unwelcome because they own one of Eric's tails their monofin shows.

Its a preference. Some people dont wanna pay that much for a fluke with that visible a monofin. Thats supposed to be one of the reasons for paying so much for silicone. This is a classified so I think its appropriate for people discuss reasons for buying or not buying. But I see your point.

I was 3 mermaids that have Eric's tails . Sadly there so cheaply made I couldn't believe my eyes! What you see in a picture on his site and what you get can't be any further from the truth!! Between rips, silicone in foot pockets, crooked monofins, uneven chipped paint, and extra silicone pieces jamming into one girls waist... I didn't know what to say!! There are no small vents on the fluke so water collects and makes odd random bubbles in the tail. I was so shocked at what I saw compared to what I thought he made ! (2013 -14 merfest) I hope with the price he is charging that the quality soon changes!!

and that is the reason why I would never order from him.

It's just dishonest to post polished, photoshopped pics on your site as a seller, when the real thing looks...much different.

As a tailmaker (or anyone who sells anything), one should put the product photos unaltered on the shop.
What you see is what you get.

Keep your shopped photos for art shots or something...

I agree with this. I know when people talk bad about this tail they think they are talking bad about Mertailor, but really it also insults and hurts the feelings of the tail owner. Maybe you could start another thread where you can discuss how much you dislike the monofins showing thru flukes so it's not ruining this tail for someone who might have wanted to buy it.

Having seen this tail in person, I think it's beautiful! If you want to use it for fun, photos, or even professionally, this is a great tail. It just got fresh paint too, which is worth alot! It has it's flaws, but its definitely worth more than $1200. I'd buy it myself if I needed a tail.

Arion, I don't think thats what anyone meant. Of course you're free to speak your mind about things. I think they are just asking that people keep in mind that people do own these tails and that we remember that they have emotional connections to their tails, as everyone does :) no matter who it's from. <3

Reports from people commenting in this thread that eric is now harassing them for doing so. It goes both ways people. In a classified for any product I think people are validated in expressing their opinions. If a person joined the forum and introduced themselves and was then attacked for having one of his tails I think that would be different. I dont agree with how this thread turned out. There's no need for it to be a back and forth because either you'd buy it or you wouldn't. But I do believe Eric has created this atmosphere himself and people wouldn't feel the need to speak and act this wag if he didn't try to squash every criticism ever in his history. Ive encouraged the members who were contacted by him to post their screen shots in the drama thread.

Tldr: responsibility goes on both ends here. Realize a classified will be open to criticism but that doesn't mean it can melt into name calling.

^^ this really sums it up well :)

arion,

i didn't see what you posted before you deleted it, but you are always free to speak your mind. Anything that has to do with the Mertailor always blows up, and there are a lot of us caught in the middle who can see both sides. I was just concerned that whoever buys this tail would feel bad or feel like they have an inferior tail. I don't care about who made it, I just don't want anyone to feel bad about a tail that makes their dream come true. A tail is so important to each and every one of us....it really completes the dream of being a mermaid and for me....it just makes me feel complete.

As a community I think it's important to hold tailmakers accountable for their work. I just think when you single one specific tail out and really pick it apart.....it's like blacklisting the tail and I honestly think it can really hurt the owner's feelings. I also think it's so important to support each other, regardless of who we bought our tail from. I really like BlueMermaid's idea to start a thread specifically for monofin showing through the fluke, or to maybe just move the serious critique of Eric's tails to the mertailor thread/section. I think the difference here is that it's not the tail owner posting the issues/problems with the tail, it's the community pointing it all out.....and yes this is a classified so it's justified, but I just think there's a fine line between critiquing the tail and making others feel bad.

Eden, I'm really sorry to hear that so many mermaids are having trouble with their mertailor tails. I wish more people would post honest reviews on here so maybe things would change.

I think the bottom line here is that the tail has flaws and has been repaired, but appears to be fully functional(based on the pictures in the tank on BlueMermaids Facebook---which are beautiful by the way) and the tail is very pretty. The fluke is nice and flowy, but because it appears to be thin and has been repaired before, it may need repairs in the future. Overall, I think it's a good deal for someone looking to upgrade from fabric/neoprene/latex or as a starter tail.

As for the harassment......let's pop some popcorn and move on over to the drama thread.

Aaargh, don't I know! The extra silicone everywhere was too much for me so I started doing some repairs... And the paint does chip in some areas, nothing bad though.
I can show you at some point how much silicone I removed from the tail. I saved it all, don't know why :D lazy?
Hopefully the quality will eventually go up. The tails are very beautiful imo

@Jessica

I just feel like I have said enough. After all, we all know the quote "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". Even if sometimes it's the ugly truth. Many of you already know what I think about Eric's nasty behavior for harassment toward mermaids and his cheap work. At this point, it's better to say no more. I guess I will just sigh from now on. Contrary to Elle, I don't have a husband to watch me yelling at the computer and facepalm my head.

I know you meant well and so did I. I totally understand your feelings about this and I acknowledge them.

I've got nothing against Eric as a person or a tailmaker. I just get a little over zealous when I see too much monofin in a silicone tail. I hope the tail goes to a good home and someone gets good use out of it. I'm just a bit too picky about the little things for my own good. Damn the perfectionist in me :headwall:

I do not own one of his tails now ever life is so short to be mad all time.. Every mermaid tail maker from Mernation ,Merbella, Mertailor, Finfolk, Mermaid Creations , the one and only Thom Shouse, mermaid Julie, Citrine ,Mike Van Daal, and any one I missed because I know I didn't catch you all ... Are all so creative ad incredible artists. I have learned so much this year about our big mer family and I love you all. I'm not perfect I made a stupid mistake. That won't be repeated..
