My D&D group is attending A-Kon this year and I'm going to cosplay as Aquata from The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning. I've always wanted to cosplay at a convention, but I've never had the time/money/sewing skills. Since I'm already spending money on mermaid stuff I figured I'd do a mermaid cosplay. I did a little looking around at animes/mangas/cartoons with mermaids and decided on Princess Aquata, one of Ariel's sisters.

We both have brown hair and eyes so I don't have to dye my hair or buy a wig and contacts. Plus I'll be buying a blue Merfin, which will match with the blue sheer fabric I'll be covering it with for the fin. There's already some pretty awesome Aquata cosplays out there, so I'm getting a lot of inspiration from them on tail/top construction, hair, etc.

A-Kon is in June, so I have about 3 1/2 months to get all the materials, make the costume, and loose a few pounds before I go around a crowded convention in a shell bra! For those who are wondering, I'm planning to borrow a wheel chair from my grandmother and wheel myself around when I'm in costume for events or to swim in the pool.

I just placed an order for 2 yards of 4 way stretch metallic royal blue spandex with 60" width from Fabric Empire. Has anyone ordered from them before? They seem to have the lowest price for 4 way spandex. I already have the sheer blue fabric from the fin leftover from when I used to belly dance (luckily I'm a hoarder and kept that fabric just in case!). I'm not going to measure or make the pattern yet until I order my Merfin and get in better shape. I'll post again when the fabric comes!

You totally should! I've seen some of the mermaid accessories you've made, you're very crafty!

Blue's my favorite color too! But I'm trying to think up some other color combinations for my future neoprene tail. I feel like every mermaid here either had a blue, green, or orange tail and I want to do something different. The Aquata cosplay gives me an excuse to make pretty blue tail.

Guess what came today!

I'm so excited! Now I just need Carla's Swimwear to get their large blue Merfins back in stock so I can order mine. I can't wait for when I can finally start making my tail pattern.

Regarding my goal to get in better shape, I've been very good this past week about exercising every day, so hopefully I'll start toning up and slimming down soon. I want to be a lean, mean, swimming machine come June!

Tail update! I got tired of waiting for Carla's Swimwear to get more Merfins back in stock, so I decided to pay the extra shipping and ordered from Mahina's site. That was over a week ago, so it should be arriving in the next week or two. I'm so excited and can't wait to swim in it!

While discussing my tail project with my grandmother, she volunteered to sew my tail once I make the pattern and cut it. She's a wonderful seamstress and used to make costumes for me to play in when I was little. I guess I never grew out of it! She's also lending me a wheelchair (she has three even though she walks, I inherited my hoarding from her) to help get around the con while in my tail. All her help is going to make this cosplay so much easier.

I was telling my friends who are also attending A-kon my plan to wheel myself around, which they though was brilliant and would make hysterical photos. One of them offered to push/escort me so I wouldn't be alone with my legs pinned together in an emergency, which I hadn't even considered. I was reluctant to ask anyone to take time away from their plans just to push me in a wheel chair, but he volunteered. Then, without any input from me, my friends decided he should dress up like a bodyguard for Princess Aquata, the visiting dignitary from Atlantica. Then they started asking how do you get a mermaid in and out of a pool! So basically without even asking I have a team of mertenders! My friends are awesome. :group hug:

My merfin finally came in the mail and I took it for a test swim yesterday! It was fantastic, I am in love with this fin. It's a little too big in the foot pocket though, so I need to buy some neoprene socks to wear with it. Minor inconvenience, I'll probably practice with some regular thin socks in the mean time.

Cosplay Checklist

Have
- monofin
- tail fabric
- pearls for hairband
- wheel chair

Need
- neoprene socks
- nude bra
- waterproof make-up

Any pictures of your completed costume yet (is it improper to call it a costume? It doesn't feel right.)
Sounds exciting!
