Yeah yeah yeah, I know I have like 3 other tail making threads. Oh well. I only have 2 including this one of actually progress and questions and crap. Hahaha. Anyway, lets get to it.
If you read one of my other threads about my silicone tail, you'd know I don't have the funds yet, and I've also been looking at my fabric tail. So I thought, since I like the way the sequins look on it why not make a sequin tail while I wait for my silicone one!?
I think I should use neoprene instead of my already made and painted and sequined fabric tail. I was thinking nude coloring would be best. So I found this and need help ordering. http://www.seattlefabrics.com/neoprene.html?gclid=CKWpvtHF0rwCFe1cMgodKEUA-Q What should I do. If someone could fill it out (at least mostly) to help me on sizes and such. Please and thank you. :)
Then I already have the sequins picked out. To think of it it reminds me of cotton candy. Same colors as my fabric one, Bahamas Blue, Raspberry Flash (pink), and Crystal Clear (iridescent), but adding skin toned; Sundrop for a disappearing waistline. I have the approx. 2,100 (or something like that) for the iridescent, and all the others I have 3 packs of each, each containing approx. 200.
Then I found this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007TBYEXM/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?keywords=e6000&qid=1374269630&ref_=sr_1_3&sr=8-3 For gluing each one down. Good deal, right!?
I also found this for extra fins thinking it would compliment the colors being iridescent and all: http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/200747666664?roken=si2zWt&varId=500055458715 Is that a good price ($16.78 I believe) and go much do I need if I did a dorsal, sides, possibly ankles, and under-bra?
I'm gonna look for a monofin for a good price, so if you can find one please share! :D
So, I'm gonna go work on some drawings and designs and stuff and posts them to see what you all think. If you have any tips, please share or any deals, coupons, etc. Thank you all and really hope this goes as planned! Thanks!

With bubbles, wishes, and kisses, Mermaid Caspiana ~~~M~~~

Okay! This is actually happening!!! My project on Indiegogo (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/mermaid-caspiana-s-fully-sequined-realistc-tail/x/7976685) plus some real life donations have gotten me to (deducting fees/taxes) $227.80!!! That's enough to get a GoPro too! Now, my mom is gonna help me with the neoprene ordering, but other than that, I've everything covered. Instead of a monofin I'm using Finis Trainers (a little longer than Zoomers and cheaper) and a Lexan sheet. I'm still using the same sequins, but instead of Sundrop for the waistline, I'm using Peachy Keen, more nude colored. I'm also using iridescent vinyl for in-between fins and under-bra fins. I have my top partially done, with one cup covered in sequins, till I ran out of them and glue. But I will be covering it with sequins, netting (that has pearls and maybe a couple smaller oceany things, starfish, sand dollar, etc), and the little fins that I will make veins in with some sort of rubber coated wire. I also plan on making some jewelry, head pieces, even one that drops to the forehead with pearls and this adorable little seashell I found last vacation!, and maybe buying this really cool iridescent arm cuff!: https://www.etsy.com/listing/193972964/resin-opal-braceler-bubble-waterdrop
Well, that's all for now I think, until I order or receive something. But, guess who's excited!!!???
P.S.: Any ideas for coating the sequins in something to make them last a bit longer but still is flexible, and cheap!? :) BTW mod podge spray didn't really work at all.

Got Lexan the day before last, sequins yesterday, and fins today. After soccer practice I drew up my fluke design and transferred it to the Lexan. I hope the glue and/or neoprene come tomorrow! :) Next step leg dummy, then measuring, then cutting/sewing, then sequins and vinyl (which still needs ordered)! Yay!
(Picture order: sequins [2 large bags of 2,100 crystal clear iris that will be the majority of the tail, 3 bags each of peachy keen for fading waistline, Bahama blue and raspberry flash for spots through out the clear], Sporti Trainer Fins, drawn Lexan with fins where they will be, drawn Lexan [everywhere will have sequins including where the fins are cause it will be covered in neoprene except the areas between the "spines" which will also be without sequins and will have the iridescent vinyl])

Thank you! Me too! I'm calling it my cotton candy tail for now. ;) We are ordering my neoprene tonight finally (delayed, I know, finally have the money)!!!

Yes, it's polycarbonate. Yeah it looks funny cause I still have both of the protective sticky layers on it so it doesn't get scratched. ;) I don't even think the store I got it from has acrylic. I mean probably, but looking for that didn't even cross my mind. Hahaha

Hahaha, that's good lol. I try not to wear goggles for videos, but, we have more chemicals in the pool than usual because it looked like a swamp a little over two weeks ago. Hahaha. But I do wear them when I'm practicing for eye protection and I wanted to look at it bend under water. It's so cool! Gah! I'm so excited!
Update! I found this neoprene and I think we may order tonight! I'm also getting blue highlights in my blonde hair so today might be an awesome day! :D I'm also going backpacking tomorrow/this weekend with my dad and brother so yeah... EXCITED ON MULTIPLE LEVELS! Haha

Whoa! That's a perfect color! That blue will blend in the water right away. If you make long sleeved swimsuit and a cap, nobody would know there's a mermaid in the pool! They'd just see your face!

Hahaha, yeah, but the thing is, it will be completely covered in sequins, so I tried to pick the best color to be subtle and match at the same time. Haha

Another update for everyone! I worked on my life size design to day perfecting the waistline measurements a bit and then adding my side fins. And then I began to create the mini "monofin" type thing for their structure. So once I finish these (I just have to finish putting the iridescent vinyl and duct tape on the first one, then cut the second one out and put the vinyl and tape on. And I'll be doing this same thing for the dorsal fin. After that I have to wait for my neoprene to come. So in the meantime I'm going to finish a small but critical detail on my top (putting some sort of iridescent fabric between the cups to cover up some of my cleavage (Hahaha) and probably add some extenders to the back because the glue pretty much hardened the stretch of the fabric of the bra so it's kinda tight. Lol. Raises that I have a little bit of adjustments to do on my monofin like remove the back later of protective sticky thing because I'm a dunce and didn't even realize it was there (hehe) and reinforce the glue with more glue and maybe some heavy duty, water proof, construction's duct tape.
So here are some pictures of what I did today plus my design. I realized I haven't put it on this thread yet. So I'm super excited and almost can't believe it's happening. I'll keep updating and I'll 'sea' you soon, lovelies. :) (Sorry if the pictures are huge, I'm doing this on my phone. Haha)

Mermaid Caspiana
07-12-2015, 05:13 PM
Well since those pictures up there didn't seem to want to work, let's try this again with some new ones! :)
This is my design that I'm working on. :)
31362

This is new life size design with my monofin and one of my side fin structures:
31363

This is my outline from when I transferred the design last night. Now we just have to cut it out, sew, decorate!
31364

This is my top! I just have to do a little something covering some cleavage and add a small extender for comfort. ;) It has my color scheme in sequins along with the nude colored ones, pearls, netting, shark teeth (that we actually found on the beach, we have quite the collection), some greenery, and a starsfish. :)
31365

These are my side and dorsal fin structures. They are plastic folders and duct tape with my iridescent vinyl. They look kinda weird now, but hopefully they turn out like in my mind haha. The side fins are more sturdy and the dorsal is more flimsy because I will obviously be sitting on it. Hehe
31367

And finally, here are my new blue highlights!!! :D
31366

I think my vinyl looks like Aurora Borealis and that's exciting. :D

Update!!! Mom and I steamrolled through today! We have it almost completely sewed and ready for sequins including extra fins! We'll be done sewing tomorrow and then I'll start with the sequins and vinyl. We just have to finish sewing the fluke with my monofin in, I have to glue down a part of the left hand side fin because I had to combine two pieces of neoprene to make it and we couldn't sew it, and then the waistline in which we are putting an elastic band in. Because my last tail was a pain to work with around the waist because if kept falling or flapping down. Not dealing with it again! Woo hoo! I'll post again tomorrow hopefully with some sequin progress! :D

I just posted this on your facebook video of your test swim in the monofin:

Nice! Be careful those points don't push their way through your neoprene...if you round them off, the points of your fluke cover will have a nice flow off the edge. Also, the points are prone to getting creased and eventually breaking.

But then I saw you posted it in March. Did you make any mods to the fin tips since then?

Also, WHERE DID YOU GET THAT AWESOME VINYL? :swoon:

PS: Your tail looks amazing! I'll be following this one closely!

Thanks! Me too! I was so happy to find it. Although the seller was on eBay and ripped us off by having the wrong shipping down until after the transaction and everything. So it ended up being a little over $100. And the vinyl itself was only I think maybe $10 or $15 at most. -_- :'(

I was so confused at first, reading this and going to my page, cause I looked at my only video and there was nothing and I just posted it like a week ago, so I looked through pics of my monofin and found it. Hahaha. But yeah I just replied. (I said that my dad did sand the edges so they're rounded. ) And I got the vinyl from eBay. But like I said to a reply just above, I'd never buy from them again, they screwed us on shipping costs and didn't even get back to us when we tried contacting them before and after the sale. Yeah, really bad eBay experience. But I do love it. You might be able to find it other places too. It was just (as we thought at the time) the cheapest on eBay. Lol And thanks! I'm so excited! :D

Everyone:
Sorry, no update today, my mom had to go into work early so we couldn't get any more sewing done. But the good thing about that was my sister and I got to mini-binge on Supernatural! We are trying to catch up before summer (no don't say it... Don't say it...) ends (you said it). We are in season 4 I think maybe episode 14 I believe we just finished. Hehehe I love it. It's my addiction. As are Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) Jared Padaleki (Sam Winchester) (and also Misha Collins (Castiel)). Teehee
But she doesn't have to go in till 7 tomorrow so tomorrow will be a day of mermaid in the making and baking some cookies and goodies just for the heck of it. (I love cooking and baking... Plus I was craving cookies tonight. Lol)
I WILL post tomorrow! ;D

So... SEQUIN UPDATE!!! Finally, right?! Haha. I spent most of today working on my tail. Yay! Well first I baked some mini pizzas in muffin tins with tortilla shells and then baked some snickerdoodle bars. Both were delicious. Hehe. And then we did dishes and I went to harvest some stuff from the garden. And then I came in and began working around maybe 4:30ish. Idk I didn't look at a clock. Lol
But yeah, the vinyl took a little while, it was kinda frustrating to get the same sizes for front and back and make it look nice. But I think I succeeded. And then I began sequin-ing.
And then crap happened. I ran out of E6000. So we went to the store which he had to do anyway for regular grocery shopping. When we got back I did some more and then we had dinner and my sister got home and I was still doing sequins and then we turned on Supernatural and I kept going. But the the season 4 finale can around and I got distracted and that's where I ended up stopping for the night. Hahaha
Eventful... Right? Lol
What do you guys think? I'm so excited the more I put on the more I love it and each time I look at it after not for a while it's even better. I'm so pumped! :D More tomorrow! ;D
http://mernetwork.com/index/attachment.php?attachmentid=31493&stc=1This is a few pictures of the stages of sewing it up the other day. :)
http://mernetwork.com/index/attachment.php?attachmentid=31494&stc=1I put it on and scooted all the way into my mom's room to show her. Without even thinking it would make my arms sore. Hahaha! Waistband elastic in too!

Welp, done for today. But I steamrolled through the fluke at least. Lol I basically was doing it most of the day. Again we watched some Supernatural too (while I was working on it) but it helps. Hehe But I'm loving it so far! I'm so excited to see it done and put it on for the first time complete! And then swim and pictures and just gah! Teehee
I'm gonna need more glue for certain and probably going to probably need more crystal clear iris sequins. Great. But yeah! Eek!
Now I'm going to Summersville to just off rocks this weekend. So this will be a pause in progress. But let me know what you guys think. :)) (Plus my towel stuffed tail. Lol)

When making a neoprene tail do you have to add extra for seam allowance to your original measurements or just sew and let it stretch a little bit?

Mermaid Caspiana

When making a neoprene tail do you have to add extra for seam allowance to your original measurements or just sew and let it stretch a little bit?
Mine was pretty stretchy and I didn't want it baggy, so we did it to my exact measurement outline. It just depends on how stretchy your neoprene is and how much leeway you think you need. ;)

dont mean to spam your page, but what if you had a zipper? would you take the width from tail measurements where it was or not. <--I'm thinking that would make it slightly baggy

You're not spamming. Lol
im not really the one to talk to about zippers cause I've never done one. But my guess would be maybe give a little leeway not as much as the zipper is but enough to be safe. You know what I mean? Haha

To hope for keeping the sequins on better. And protection too. ;) It says it is flexible, water resistant and permanent. So let's hope for the best and we are getting glue one way or another tomorrow and I am finishing this thing! Wish me luck! Lol

You really don't want to end up as sticky as flypaper after all the work you put into that beautiful tail!
Thank you Pearlie! Good tip! I will try it tomorrow because guess who got glue! This Mer! A butt load too! We had been going by twos and since I only have less than a week I wanted to get as much as I could so I didn't have to worry about a last minute run out or something. Just in hopes that this is enough. Lol Cross your fins!
Hopefully more updates tomorrow! :D

I see that the spray is odorless but the regular glue - if it isn't odorless - be careful. That stuff can be harmful to breathe and it really does get to smelling. You might get a headache from all of that glue. If you can use it outside or in a well ventilated room that would be good. ;)

I made a book once and covered the cover with moss and created a little pool of water using E6000. It has a perfect clear consistency, but I started to feel a bit light headed. I guess it was worth it because it does look like water.

Yeah, I can't bring it outside for a few reasons, but I have read up on it and make sure to start a fan or open a window (or both) when possible if it starts getting to my head or getting too strong smelling. ;) Your book sounds cool though. :)

UPDATE! With 4 days left till we leave (at 3am Saturday night/Sunday morning), I have completed the backside of the fluke! I'm basically almost done! That's how I'm looking at it. Haha I just hope I don't fun out of sequins, we can always go get more glue in 5 minutes, but sequins we'd have to order so cross your fins! ;D First I'd w/o flash and second is with flash. Just about done guys! I ran out of glue tonight or else I'd be a lot farther. I know, I just had 5 tubes. Lol But the backside of the fluke alone took up 2! So I'm going to post finished pictures tomorrow for sure because it's my deadline because we are leaving for Myrtle Beach at like 3am tomorrow (technically Sunday but oh well)! So all I have is the little bit left on the right side, the backs of the pectoral fins, and the dorsal. If I run out of sequins which is a great possibility, I'm not going to do the waistline with sequins, but with netting and stuff. Like a belt that's never removed. Lol Opinions? :)
32447

And here I'm just lifting up the dorsal so you can kind of see both sides together. ;)

Well I have everything except the waistband and clear coat (I tested it btw). We are actually in the car now on the way to Myrtle Beach! Since I'm not using it the first and maybe second day/night, I'm going to sew and glue the netting around the waist and then spray on the balcony. Lol I'm always cutting so very close to the edge it's not even funny. Hahaha
Anyway! Hopefully finished product pics and vids tomorrow or at the latest the next day. See ya in the sand! ;D

Thank you! :) Oh goodness! Haha not for a while. I'm gonna have to fix this one some too.

Well, the E6000 worked great. It was the glue that the company used compared to mine. The shimmery stuff on the backs of the sequins stuck, but the sequins themselves had a lot of caualties. It's hard to explain. But yeah. So I'm probably going to have to go back sometime and see them on.

So if I used sequins without the metallic backing, would you recommend gluing sequins or not? I'm patient but I've tried sewing sequins before and I gave up very quickly. If glue works, even it it requires some repair, then I'd love to give it a try.

It should. I'm no expert, but it should. That was my trouble, the original backing glue. But warning, if you use glue, make sure you have the neoprene or fabric exactly how tight or loose you want it, because the glue doesn't give much stretch once you have all of the sequins on. And be sure to have extras for casualties. ;) But let me know how it works for you. :)

Had the first swim of the season today!!! Despite the rain. Lol I think I'm going to have to go back in and hand stitch sequins on on the problem areas, knees, waist, butt???, heels... For safe measure ba use they're still coming off. The shiny backing stays on thanks to the E6000 but the glue Cartwright's uses to attach it to the shell shaped plastic, soesnt do as well. And we might add a zipper because this thing is hard to get on without sequin fatalities. Lol And we're gonna take in the waist and I'm either finishing it off with sequins or making a permit any belt thing out of net and shells and stuff. OH! AND I'M MAKING ANOTHER TOP COMING SOON! Lol

Would it be a good idea or possible for me to put a thin layer of clear latex over my sequins for security? I've found out today... Hand seeing these on are not really my thing. Lol If you've been following this thread, the spray on E6000 didn't do what I wanted. So yeah. Help? Hehe

Wow, haven't updated this in a while. Haha
Well, good news! I'm actually almost done with my repairs!!! Lol
Thanks to a fellow mer on here (I'll have to find her name a little later), I found and bought some clear, silicone caulking and am putting a thin layer of it over my sequins as of yesterday, today, and tomorrow I will finish! <3 I'm so excited! It's exactly what I've been searching for and its working wonders! I'm putting the same irridencent glitter I'm using for my top with it so it's even sparklier than before and I'm in love. Every time I touch it I fangirl and it feels like I'm doing my own unboxing. Haha
Anyway, I'll be testing it probably Saturday, so once I do and such, I've decided to sell tails. :) They're neoprene, sequin, silicone hybrids! :) Once I make sure it's all good by this weekend, I think I'll start taking commissions. (By the way I'm opening my etsy shop soon so be on the lookout as I'll not only have tails, but accessories and other things like custom Lexan monofins and Art.)
So yay!!!
I have pictures to! As of tonight, I got the entire front (sans side fins) and the back of the fluke done! =D All with only 5 tubes of silicone! About $5 from Walmart. :) I need to get more glitter tomorrow and possibly one more tube. But once I finish this and my top, I'll be getting some photo shoots done!!! Yay!!! Then the beach!!! Woo hoo!!!
Front: 38238
Back: 38239
It's so freaking sparkly. I love it.
P.S.: This may sound stupid, but it literally sounds like an actual silicone tail when I pay it and such. But it's just awesome. You know what I mean. Hahaha

07-22-2016, 03:41 AM
Oh and thanks to working with this glitter for the past like month, especially the mass amounts for the tail, there's no getting rid of it. It's everywhere. Even a Best Western in Columbus I traveled to last week. Bahahaha
The curse of the glitter has bestowed itself upon my existence once more (two years ago, I made glitter tennis shoes for my role as Sharpay in HSM lol, the red glitter is still to this day found in my dad's truck. Hahaha)

Guys!!! I have almost everything covered in silicone!!! I have to finish covering the side fins, front and back, decide what I'm doing with the dorsal (either scaling with sequins and silicone-ing or just scaling ribs and glittering the rest idk yet I'll decide tomorrow). And we have to take in the wait about an inch and I'll be blending the waist out then. But I'M ALMOST DONE GUYS!!! I'M FINALLY ALMOST COMPLETELY DONE!!! *dies* Didn't get a pic tonight of the tail, but here's an awful one of me that I thought was kinda funny. Lol

Sorry guys, no finished pictures yet. I needed more supplies so I'm finishing it up tonight. ;) I'm so excited though! My entire body and fluke of it is done. I just have to cover the side fins, decorate and cover the dorsal, and take in the waist then blend the silicone out nicely. Then BOOM! Finally done!!! Year's progress on and off original and repair, I'm finally almost complete. *sigh*
And I hope this interests some people into commissioning from me. <3

Nope, I used a tailor's measuring tape, and wrapped it around then recorded it accurately onto the paper. :) Or you could measure just across and double it, or do what you said, or make a duck tape dummy. There are a bunch of methods, that's just what I did. Going all the way around seems easiest, at least for me, and most accurate and simple for fabric. :)
