Finkini?? - Inspired by Forgive my Fins!

So I have an idea!

if you've ever read he mer book "forgive my fins" the character mentions that when she's not in water she can turn her tail into a Finkini for modesty purposes. Theyre basically short shorts made of scales. I was wondering if anyone has ever made these? Or would be interested in making them? Silicone scales would probably work best. If you wanted fabric you could buy scale print spandex and make shorts too! It just wouldn't be as realistic. I thought this would make a great bottom to wear under your tail, so when you take your tail off or put it back on, you can tell the kids that you turned your tail into a Finkini! What do you think? Lame idea? (:

I think I saw something where the mertailor had made scale bikini bottoms. I just don't think they'd be very comfortable

I know that the Mertailor has done something similar for photoshoots. He's done actual bikini bottoms made of scales. I'm sure it wouldn't be a huge stretch to do shorts!

I would love to see how it turns out! I'm thinking they'd be really good for performances mermaids or mermaids for hire. Likes they could take they're tail off under a dock or something, then come play with the kids on land!

Yeah, I've wanted to have a pair for a while now. I love the way they look and they've got to be really durable, stay in place, etc. compared to most swimsuits. But I've been weary about it due to the looks I might get wearing them at my Y. xD

I'm also making some bikini bottoms out of silicone, to wear under my tails to avoid the dreaded bather-rise-up! haha!

Why not just wear bikini bottoms that are boyleg cut? Or swim pants that go to the knees or ankles? Seems an easier option than making silicone panties.

Because they dont ride-up like that, they ride up and peak out of the top of the tail :)
And making silicone bikini bottoms is actually quite easy XD

Not if it was a high-waisted tail, but my tails aren't so I'm making the bottoms just to help out :) Plus, I can wear them to the beach normally, hehe!

I did this with my blue fabric tail, many years ago, before even knowing the mer-community existed, lol. I think if I had used an actual pattern when making the pants, it would have turned out much better. I do think it would be a great idea though. Especially for mers who struggle with the back of their tail being too short.

All I could think when I saw the silicone Mertailor made was HOLY MOTHER OF ALL YEAST INFECTIONS! NO! Yeah, non-breathable fabrics are NOT good for lady parts. When it's dry it would be very hot and sweaty, and non breathable. Also everything would pinch and pull until you got enough sweat going to lubricate it. Sorry guys but I disagree- I actually think it's a terrible idea :P At least not silicone/latex ones. Guess I'm the odd one out.

They make spandex ones with the scale print which are cute though :)

I would have to agree with Winged, not a 100% good idea for silicone to be used as 'panties'-esk making it hard for ladies to breath in their down stairs.

Also the smell when your parts don't get to breathe. Its like the stench of rotten fish or stinky foot jam.

Not only will your lady parts sweat, your butt too. And those two mix breeding bacteria which can make your skin infected and hurts to pee. And prob all kinds of other problems too.

A finkini looks very uncomfortable for a female to wear. An as for what Ashton said about not being able to breath is very true. Silicone an latex do NOT breath. So it would tend to get very hot an very uncomfortable to the wearer. Now the fish scale bottoms or shorts or pants seem to be the better option. But this is only my opinion.

O.o I regret posting this now, it's hurting me reading the responses lol! Maybe if there was some kind of liner and 'drainage holes' (for lack of better term) to let it breathe more? Although I do like those scale print ones..

I'm thinking maybe start with a swimsuit bottom, and only put silicone/latex scales on the front and back and leave the double lined area at the bottom with only the fabric. Might look funny though.

Maybe if they did it like pearlie makes tail, and did the scales separately over bottoms or shorts, that way their is breathing room between them?

Exactly! I was thinking about sequins, but that would be so uncomfortable under a tail and would probably jab you around the edges

Don't be hurt, the idea is great, we just need to figure out a better way to go about making something that gives the body proper ventilation.

Sequins in your nethers are not a good idea, ask any burlesque dancer!

You could adhere scales down to where the bottoms start to go under, as long as the bottoms are the same color, and start the scales in the back just under the curve of your butt...if you look at a standard pair of panties, just don't put scales on the part where the liner goes.

To be fair, I think everyone is assuming it will be worn on land. If it was going to be worn only in the water it would act like any other bather bottom- it wont get hot or sweaty- and yes, it will certainly get wet but that's what happens in the water! ^^;
And it wouldn't be too heavy, not if cast thin and using a fabric back-up (well, that's what I plan to do anyways! XD Will have to let you all know how it goes!)

Yeah, I wouldn't wear this as like underwear or something lol. I'd just wear it to, in and from the pool probably if I *did* have one. Which is like an hour total out of water.
