Instagram & Mermaids.

So, I've heard about the ridiculous instagram accounts that steal other mers' pictures, tails, drawings, designs, just uploading, editing and doing all sorts of crazy stuff for followers, or for kicks, and just the younger mers in general. I see it all the time, but I was just looking on instagram under the merbella tag...and I found one of my own drawings on there. Keep in mind this was like the first tail I uploaded on here I think (before I started really appreciating brightly colored tails) and I'm by NO means a sketch artist. I'm better with other materials...but still, I feel kind of offended almost? Like, this isn't even a picture of me with me photoshopped out of it like I've seen happen before and it still sort of upsets me. I don't have an instagram, but I still cannot believe someone did this. Like...just what the heck? Do these people seriously think ANY of this is okay? Do they know what plagiarism is? I mean, maybe they don't. I have a friend who wasn't taught what it was and she was in sixth grade.

My thoughts are jumbled. Just...gyah. I'm sorry for anyone who has dealt with this on a larger scale than just a practice drawing being stolen. No credit or anything. Claiming it's their own.

I report my images for DMCA Takedown all the time. People are so disrespectful of others work. I have a lot of the mermaid photo accounts ban me from their profile for crediting and tagging photos they post (and they delete all the credit comments I left too). Will get banned for asking a user to take down my photo that they posted (I always take a screen cap on my phone when I find one so I can still report them after they block me). Straight up disrespect. If you see an image that's yours, report it.

It really pisses me off that mermaids, photographers, artists, models, ect spend years and years and countless thousands of dollars to be able to hone their craft/skills to where they can make the images that these people post, yet asking them to take a few seconds to credit said photos/art is unreasonable. And to some someone else commenting and tagging the stolen photo they posted with credits is offensive and unforgivable?! Some people are despicable! I encourage people to report stolen images if you own them. If enough people do that for an account the account will be banned by Instagram. I've had a few banned by contacting the copyright holders of the images. These were ones that deleted credits and banned users that did so.

I straight up will not follow accounts unless they're original content (by the user) or they give credit for everything that they post. It's not okay to take the works of dozens of people without credit just to gain popularity. Drives me MAD.

Completely agree with you there, Iona. I saw your post on Tumblr a little while ago about the whole mess...it's unbelievable how people can be with these images and stuff. It's just...I just wanna know what they're thinking. >_>

I won't follow anyone unless it's all original content as well. Ridiculous how many mers get their stuff stolen. My tat is so everywhere it's ridiculous. And since I've had so many cropped out watermarks I have a hard time when other post my work, even WITH a tag or credit given. :/

I guess we'll just have to keep being copyright police.

Art theft is so horrendous on the net. Just today I stumbled upon two etsy shops selling laser cut acrylic pendants.. with stolen artwork as the design. They're so popular this person has sold hundreds, and close to or over a thousand of these pendants at around $15 each, and $90 sets as well. I knew I'd seen the artwork elsewhere so I found the devianART user who was the artist and let them know. I hope they sue the pants off of those shops. People suck so hard :thumbdown:

I've had people email me about using one of my photos for a kindle book cover.... and because the email got lost in the abyss that is my inbox, they assumed my silence was an 'okay' and used it as their cover >_< I had to point out to them that it was used without permission especially as I've had lots of bands and authors interested in that same image and if a publishing house wanted it for a book cover I would be paid at least £350 per image for example. I had one approach me about some of my snow princess images and even when they finally decided not to use it, they gave me £100 for my time.

People also msg me asking if they can use my images in their own work..... I have to inform them that it's not stock and certainly not free >_<

I have acquaintances who run their own t-shirt business. They are constantly having to send cease and desist letters to people on zazzle and cafepress to stop using their designs, and the thieves just got it off the Internet. It's a pretty bad problem. Makes me not want to put any kind of art or craft online.

I make sure to watermark my images as a deterrant at least, it does tend to help but if people are determined, it's hard to stop them.

I had someone do this with a photo that was very personal to me as it was taken on my honeymoon. It was just a photo of me swimming underwater holding out a conch shell, but this mermaid fanatic thought it was cool and posted it as their profile picture without even mentioning that the person in the photo was not them. I flipped and asked them to remove it as well as reporting them- luckily it seem it was just some young kid who didn't think much of it and she removed it but it still freaks me out that she basically has this photo of me that is very personal and important and I can never change that. It creeps me out.

Instagram seems to be full of the worst perpetrators of the problem. On Pinterest, most people give credit, and on Tumblr, there's a place to link to the original. I don't know if Instagram offers that, but it sure doesn't seem like most Insta users are using it.

Tumblr users are really bad with giving credit too but it seems slightly better than Instagram.

if they use the free insta repost apps, it usually overlays a credit to the original user but otherwise there's nothing to prompt people to make sure they own copyright or to link back when they post something as instagram is meant for people to upload images as they take them themselves, not to share images from elsewhere. They do have a fairly good reporting system though.
