I'm the Mer on Fire!

Hello, I live in London, Ontario, Canada and my name is Tiamat Michelle Edgerton Joseph Hart Pesando, though people generally call me either Tia Michelle or simply Tia or Michelle.

I am a hermaphrodite with dominant female traits (above the waist I am entirely fully-functionally female) and, like 75% of all hermaphrodites, was brought up as a male in the desperate hope that that would somehow turn me into one. It didn't work.

I always felt a connection to the water; thus I worked as a life guard for 9 years and, like Daryl Hannah before me, swam mermaid-style whenever the opportunity presented itself (for me, whenever noone else was looking). More recently I have begun monofinning and otherwise practicing to be a professional mermaid, and I am also in the process of becoming the world's first hermaphrodite/transwoman Sister to be recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. Believe it or not, the latter does not actually interfere with the former, for I am staying home to look after my retired parents and in the meantime am only a consecrated maiden. I shall be doing all of my work at least partially for charity, and have a reasonable amount of professional modeling experience.

For my debut as a professional mermaid I want to make a big spla- or rather, impression, so I ordered a tail from who I believe to be the best in the business: Raven Sutter of Merbella Studios! It is a bit of an investment for one in my position, but it should be ready in some months, and I shall keep you updated as she warrants!

So hopefully I can thus enter pro mermaiding with a bit of, what's that word again? "Street cred"...or would that be "sea cred"? ;):cool:

wow! thanks for sharing that you're a hermaphrodite and being so open! It's so very rare and it's great to have someone willing to talk about it so that those of us who are a bit ignorant can learn and be sensitive :) Also, I'm one of the few other Canadian mermaids, so YAY MORE CANADIANS. Over here in Halifax I run Halifax Mermaids and we have quite the pod building up :) Come visit some time!

P.s. I think it's awesome you have aspirations to be a sister! I was raised roman catholic and while I don't identify with it very much anymore, I have fond memories of certain things. The sisters in my life were true lights and gifts to the world. One of my friend went through the discerning period as well as a sister but realized it wasn't what she was called to.

And yes, merbellas rocks. Hehe :D

Merci beaucoup! I shall remember the warm and wonderful welcome I received from the merfolk of the MerNetwork! As for my tail, at the moment all I can say is that Raven was rather excited at the thought that my fluke could be similar to that of her Butterfly Koi tail, which just had its first image put up on her Facebook page the other day!

...Actually I shall say to more things about it: that it appears that it will be shinier than the Koi tail, and that it shall possess something of a spiritual theme related to an experience I had when I was Princess Ariel's age....

SeaGlass Siren, thank you very much for giving me my first friend request, and I dearly hope that we may work together soon (once I have my tail, of course)! Ours is a pod which does not have coastal geography on its side, but I have made modeling-related trips to Toronto before (I lived there for 21 years before my parents retired to London); going there for an appearance or three is quite doable! Hopefully both of our opportunities and exposure shall improve dramatically once Ripley's Aquarium in Toronto follows suit with its fellows and starts to have professional mermaid shows!

Raina, what can I say? Of course I've heard of you, and after having heard from you in such a lovely manner, your magnificent mermaid, I've just bought your book!

I've seen the aquarium, there's not a whole lot of space for merformers and the biggest tank that they have houses small sharks and mantas which is also a petting area on the top level. I do hope to work with you yes :) that will be quite exciting

i'm still practising to swim. i still can't open my eyes and hold my breath underwater :( some mermaid i turned out to be. a friend and i just started a band though, maybe we can do something music related? keep in touch~~ <3

In addition to lifeguarding, I also worked as a swimming/water safety instructor for years, so trust me when I say that it is possible to become quite accustomed to breath-holding and opening one's eyes underwater even if it is uncomfortable at first!
