Since the tail thread is so popular, what about having one to show off tops? I didn't find one when I searched, so correct me if there is already one out there.

It doesn't matter what your top is made of: silicone, scales, shells, fabric, sequins, etc. If you feel like showing it off, here's the place to do it!

I'll start with mine. I've got a shiny purple top and a plastic seashell top. Both were put together by me.

i have one top i just made to match my new orange tail i just used an old nude bra that i don't wear that often,
its painted with tangerine orange Tulip fabric paint that has Jacuard pearl ex pigment mixed it to make it sparkly...
i might use some glitter fabric spray paint on it if it works on my piece of scrap spandex from my tail

Just finished a Photoshopped design for a Mermaid Galēnē abalone shell top. The shells are on order. I have in hand the blue netting, Iona's gorgeous abalone necklace from Etsy, (https://www.etsy.com/listing/187562162/abalone-pearl-crystal-necklace?ref=shop_home_active_1) and a bazillion aquarium plants from my retired fish tanks. I still need to pick up a (paradoxical :thinks:) Warner's This Is Not A Bra strapless bra, which I'll use for a base.

Looking forward to constructing this! (BTW, that's not my body.)

Glue/sew the shells to a bra?

Mermaid Galene
04-30-2014, 09:09 PM
The shells I got aren't big enough to cover the whole bra, so I'll stack them with smaller abalones. You could do something similar, Merlissa.

I've dome similar things with my lion's paw and foliage, but I just hate how bulky it tends to look, even if it makes my stomach look smaller in comparison.

Great tops everyone! Shimmy I love your abalone top :)

I've only made two tops myself.. I need to make another one. I'm so horrible at procrastinating making new ones, haha :P Is that just a me thing or do you guys have that problem too? I guess it doesn't help that ever since I few from a C cup to a D cup nothing really covers things.. even the abalone make my boobs look smaller than they are cause a good chunk of the lower bit of the cup I had to cover in foliage.

Anyhow here are my current 2

To my eye, this top looks really well proportioned and beautiful. But I wonder if attaching an outline of small white shells, maybe around the inside edge of the lion's paws, would visually offset the bulk of the greenery. It might make the whole top look smaller.

I've got a 75%-80% finished top that's been sitting in my living room for a month now. Sewing on the foliage is just so tedious! And I invariably get frustrated and break a thread and have to start over. Also, I have no gorilla glue, so I can't put the shells on yet, grrrrr.

Yeah, isn't she a cool pony? I got her on Etsy, and the artist is making a smaller version for a headpiece. This horse is really heavy, though; it's polymer clay. Once my mermaid business gets rolling and I have a little more time for making stuff, I think I'll sculpt and cast some rigid neoprene pieces for my costumes. Rigid neoprene is really light and sturdy, and it takes detail really well from a mold. I also want to do some silicone pieces for tops and headdresses. I'm all about critters, so it would be great fun to make and wear mantas and seadragons and whales. (Oh, my!)

Beautiful! Where did you find the large shells?
They are white abalone with slight parasite damage (so a couple of flaws in them) from a shell collector here in Australia. Apparently very few polished shells come that large, and if they do they have a bit of damage but you can hardly tell. So that's why people rarely sell them.

I made this a few weeks ago! I originally ordered one off etsy but the netting was so thin I was afraid it would break when I had it on! And it was really uncomfortable, so I used the same shells and netting and made a new one:) after making it I was like "aww crap! That seaweed on the sides is going to be so itchy!" But luckily it isn't http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/27/2azury3a.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/27/qe2yqape.jpg

Look how adorable you are! I love the top - so creative!

I saw some lily pads at the craft store, but they were huge on my little bewbies! I have a couple of art nouveau lamps whose bases look like lilypads and am going to try and make a mold of them...I like the idea of a freshwater mer!

That turned out great, Wesley! I bought some of those lilypads at Michaels, too, and I plan to make a top from them.

The shells are silicone from Mermaid Atlantis. I'm a 32A (sometimes AA, depending on the cup shape) and I found the size small shells to be too small for me to wear on their own. So I glued them to a string bikini top I got at WalMart for three bucks. I plan on adding pearls to them, but I want to make sure that the top works as is before I go wasting pearls.

I'm planning on swimming in it today. I'm thirty years old and have never worn a bikini in my life, so I'm more nervous about wearing this top in public than I was about wearing the tail!

My first time uploading, forgive me if I do this wrong! This is my swimmable top. I used glue-on foam 'shells' for my Halloween costume, but they are not swimmable. This is my fully swimmable mermaid. The tail is from finfunmermaid. I bought a nude bikini top from Amazon, then added fishing net, sparkles, green, blue & white pearls, a little turquoise bow, and lots of silvery glitter spray. It's all put together using Liquid Stitch, so it'll stay on underwater. =D

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/28/4476f077bfa8b115490edd143fe781bc.jpg

Do I want to cover the shell in pearls, or just the little bits of fabric that stick out under the cup? And I'm not 100% sure about the darker pearls on the bottom of the camera right cup.

Any opinions would be really appreciated, because once I glue on the pearls they aren't going anywhere!

I love those baroque pearls; they look almost like dripping water. What if you took those, put them at the peak of the shell, glued some round pearls in a solid mass right beneath the baroque ones, and then more scattered pearls beneath that? It might look kind of like a pearl waterfall.

I've got my top planned, just waiting for the bra to come in (Fredricks sale 19.99!)
With Miyus permission I'm doing her strap/back, wrap leaves over the cups with netting over that, netting going down a bit. I'm also doing a second top that is going to be a bodice like top with a hood, all in net with seaweed laced through it. It'll go with my mers darker side and I looove the idea in my noggin

Hi everyone! I'm getting so much inspiration from all of these great mermaid tops on here.

I've been working on designing mine but keep running into trouble. I started using an old bikini top but once I glued shells to it, the top became much less stretchy and flexible so that it wasn't covering up as much as it should! Unfortunately I had to remove the shell in the middle between the cups so that it could be more flexible, but this is essentially what my current top is looking like.

I want to keep working on tops, though, and play around with the materials more! I bought a really pretty ribbon with pearls dangling from it (you can kind of see it in the upper part of the picture) but am not sure what to do with it yet. I've been using a combination of sewing, hot glue, and super glue. What glues do you find work best in the water?

My tail is pink/purple so I wanted to have some of those colors in the top, too, which is why I picked the pink/purple shells.

You could attach the ribbon to the bottom edge of a top, on the underside, so just the pearls show, and dangle down nicely :)

E6000 is pretty much considered the best waterproof glue. Hot glue will dissolve eventually, and super glue goes brittle and can crack off because it has no flex. Sewing is a great option, but if you can't sew something, E6000 is usually the best choice. You can get it on eBay really cheaply and easily!

Miyu
12-22-2014, 04:25 AM
I will say that for sewing, I love using clear nylon thread - it's practically invisible, strong, and I use it to literally sew EVERYTHING down - I don't glue anything :p

as people seemed to really like my shell bra at merfest...

26654

26655

the shells were actually ceramic clam bowls (with a flattened out section) that I bought from a shell shop in town (the shop had turned them into mobiles, go figure lol) I used wood filler to build up the flattened sections and holes the shop had drilled, as I knew the texture would be a close match. aaand then spray painted them a satin cream with an outdoor friendly spraypaint. The halter neck wraps around after an initial loose knot, to form a necklace with a chandelier crystal =)

Thanks miyu!

Only downside to the top is... the shells are heavy to wear for long periods of time (especially sat up where it puts strain on my neck) and the shells are hard and rough so for example after wearing it on the sunday at merfest for about 4 hrs, I ended up with bruising and broken blood vessels on the inside of my arms. It's kinda a photoshoot only top lol

the plastic clam shells everyone's finding, where are you getting them and how big are they? Trying to find shells that at 7-8" wide to cover my 40c chest is annoying to say the least lol Considering ordering some silicone shells for my next top otherwise i'll do an abalone top if I can find nice polished ones that go with my new tail X_x

Oh noooo! Don't we all have that one gorgeous piece that's for photoshoots only? :p

I have the issue with weight on my neck as well, which is why I decided to use my back-lacing system for mermaid tops, so I'm not putting all the pressure on sensitive areas (I bruise if I bump something wrong, LOL). The shells I'm using now for Michelle's and mine tops are quite a bit heavier than I expected, but the lacing system completely relieves all that weight and pressure :) My first top wasn't so heavy, but I did wear it all day for several days at a pirate event this past summer, and I had to keep checking to make sure I still had my top on (because it was so comfy, and standard/costume bras are normally almost painful for me to wear).

Seconding the recommendation for Atalon-the-deer! Their deviantart is just so drool-worthy, I spend hours looking through that gallery. They offer some AMAZING vacuum-molded shells for tops! :D Atalon is for sure one of my favorite costume creators!

Laureen, I just love your glowing top! ;)

Looking for some advice...I am less-than-busty. Very much so. As in, I can barely fit an A cup. I have a top that I made (well, okay, kinda. It got left out in the backyard for a long time and is currently covered in dirt...and algae. Oops lol) on a bra that was actually one of my sisters' that got left behind when they moved out. It's small, an A, I believe. It has lions paw shells. Pretty average. But when I swim, water will rush in and it's tiny-boob-a-palooza when the water pulls the top away from my chest. I have it tied up with netting and double knot it and make it tight enough that it actually hurts my neck.
Any thoughts on how to fix this? Add more stuff around the shells so more of my chest is covered? I never thought having TINY boobs would be a problem. :|

I would make sure you have the correctly sized bra first! My bras used to gap a bunch on the top. But when I got correctly measured and figured out sister sizing, bras magically started to fit. I'm not sure if that'll solve everything, but it may help a little!

I always get worried about this as well. It is hard to find swim tops small enough for me sometimes - but especially in the past. I haven't tested my top out in the water yet, but I think it will stick to me well. I was thinking though that if I do have issues, I will use a sports bra. I really think a sports bra will hold on tight to you and you won't have to always be looking down to make sure your top is not gaping open when you bend over or swim, etc. I know how you feel though. I have put on a top, gotten in the pool, then had to tie it much tighter and constantly worry about it. I hate wearing a one piece though so I know that that is not always a fun option.

I am sure that you can make a sports bra look very pretty with shells, fake seaweed, etc. I hope this helps! :)

I have begun making neoprene sea animals for embellishing tops, tails - wherever! These and other items can be found in my Etsy shop, Mermaid Galene's Grotto (https://www.etsy.com/shop/MermaidGalenesGrotto). See the classified section (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?9561-Mermaid-Galene-s-Grotto) here on MerNetwork for more info. Here's my prototype: a Blue-ringed Octopus named Octavia. I wore her, to the delight of lots of children, at our New Year's Eve waterpark gig.

In the next few months, I will be adding more realistic neoprene animals: other octopus species, rays, sea turtles, and eels. Down the road I will also be listing faerie products - perhaps even a neoprene dragon or two!

In DIRE need of that octo. When I get the funds, yessss, more octos in my room.

So I decided to repaint a bra I made last year. I need a top to match a sparkle walking tail I made and I had two pretty turquoise shells, and was going to make a brand new top, but decided to just sell those sells and repaint my other and add glitter

What did you use to paint the shells Shimmy? I was told to use acrylic paint, but that didn't last long at shells and was scratched off very easily :-(

shimmygoddess
03-10-2015, 09:35 AM
That is what I used. Mostly Metallic paints. I also used some Lumiere on some other shells. I added a glitter coat and could probably spray them with a clear coat. I did have one shell chip on the edge, but b/c I banged the shell so I just painted over it. I havn't had any problems yet with paint chipping or flaking. I am pretty careful with all my costumes

Been resting for the past 2 days due to a migraine and cramps and feel shitty, but needed to do something today. So I grabbed my heating pad and put on some scary movies and decided to make my daughter a new mermaid top to match her pink Fin Fun tail :) Still want to add some pink pearls, but overall it is mostly done. Cannot wait until the weather warms up and can do a photoshoot with it.

I do like the side detail. Maybe you could put thin strips of netting on certain parts of the side so as not to cover all of that detail. Or you could sew on a few random pearls.
