View Full Version : The Trident Thread

While there are threads on making trident items (in the accessories section of tailmaking), I haven't seen anything about trident items we might find. Most mer things are not that hard to find- shells, sea life themed decor, etc. But tridents aren't nearly as common and are too often only plastic, cheap costume props that don't look all that great.
I started this thread hoping that whenever any of us come across trident items, we can post them here.
Here's what I came across today, all on medievalcollectibles.com.
This pretty trident ring (http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-24400-silver-trident-ring.aspx):

Trident earrings (http://http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-24447-silver-trident-earrings.aspx):

And trident bracelet (http://www.medievalcollectibles.com/p-24440-trident-leather-bracelet.aspx):

I'm looking for a nice trident to hang on the wall- when my bf and I move in together, so I'm not in a hurry, but it's disappointing to not find any currently available.

A quick search of 'trident' on etsy turned up a lot of cool stuff, due to the newest Hunger Games Movie (One of the characters, Finnick, wields a trident).

I almost mentioned that the only tridents widely available right now are from The Hunger Games, and those are very much not the traditional Poseidon or Neptune type that I associate with the sea. I'm not sure how others feel about it. But that character's trident, to me, doesn't count. It actually has four 'forks' or blades, counting the center, and I don't even think it ought to be called a trident.
*I don't know if the book features the same trident design as the movie, I haven't read it.
Also- yes, I just looked at Etsy's designs, there are quite a few, mostly Hunger Games and Shiva. But by all means, I hope if anyone comes across some beautifully rendered designs which have the traditional sea-trident look to please link them here. I do see a few that are what I'm talking about, but nothing that stands out to me personally. If they stand out to you, share them here! :)

I'd like an actually usable trident.
Like a sturdy polearm or spear, but not too heavy to take swimming/diving.
So I have something to ward off predators.
Probably not very functional, but a lot better than a small knife (which one should have anyway, in case one gets tangled up in a net or something!).
And it sure would look good with a tail ;)

If you search the party city website, you can find costume residents with black plastic handles and tines sculpted out of gold plastic with a spiral, scaly, coral design. That might work for you. I found one last Halloween at a Party City store near me.

I want an actual trident, like Caltuna's talking about. There used to be some really nice, heavy ones on Museum Replicas.
It's a bit aggravating that most of my searches on 'trident weaponry' and such garner only plastic costume props, brimstone and hellfire designed pitchforks, things with two or four tines, and items that actually are virtual but look really great in the image search until you click and discover they're for Second Life and such.
These are closer to what I'm looking for, but still designed with too much demonyness (yes, I made that word up) to them- the one comes with the plaque and the other is stainless steel.

I don't want it to look like a Hell guard should be holding it.
Just a basic replica in steel of what this staute of Poseidon shows him holding.

Or what this artist drew, produced in stainless steel, and about six feet long, would be perfect.

How's this

some spearfishing equipment still has steel tridents instead of guns.

On Etsy, I ordered this OOAK (One Of A Kind) necklace yesterday in the evening.
I asked the seller to remove the white pearl before shipping to make it more manly though.

If you want a real and useful trident, try looking up 'frog gig' or 'fish gig'. Not sure why, but that's the technical term for a fishing spear. Many of them have multiple points, and some look very much like a traditional trident. http://www.chaarly.com/fishing/34614-3-tine-fishing-fish-barbed-stainless-spear-gig.html And as for etsy, when I searched trident, I turned up a lot of stuff like the necklace Merman Arion just bought. That thing is really cool!

And that is why when a mermaid says she's got a gig I reply "Bring back flounder!" ;)

Ah yes- I had not thought of that, probably because I have so little exposure to it. I also would love to have an antique harpoon on my wall. Remnants of the past. I love whaling antiques.

Oh, Arion- that is so pretty. I actually find the pearl a little out of place on that. I think you made a good choice.

Isn't that funny- I've heard of 'frog gigging' and the people who do that use a spear or a narrow trident, from what little I saw. But I never knew that the thing itself is where the frog hunting got its name from.

That is brilliant! I'll have to grind down the barbs and the tips to make it less lethal, but that is exactly what I want for my mertender! Thank you so much for the tip off!

Ooh- thanks, it's nice to see it in the hands of someone. Gives a better idea of size and scope.
And actually, makes me realize for certain that it isn't what I'm looking for. I might not find what I'm looking for, and finding someone to make what I am looking for might end up what I need to do.
Glad I've got some time!
