View Full Version : Mizuko's 2nd Silicone Tail- Ariel
Mizuko

Hi everyone!
I'm back with another tail project, lol!
I do a fair bit of entertaining work, both as my Mizuko self and as characters. One character I really love (obviously) is Ariel! She's quite easy to portray and I've always loved her growing up, hehe! The appearances I do as her are in 'walking' tails or dresses, but I have always wanted a realistic Ariel tail!!
19255
After everything I have learnt from my first silicone tail, I feel like I'm ready to tackle another one! :D
So, my biggest issue is how to translate this:
19256
Into real life. (sparkles and all, haha!)
I've seen Merbella's and Mermaid Melissa's takes on Ariel's tail, and although I love both designs, I would really like to make her fins transparent!
So my first step in ALL this, is to make a lexan monofin! :)
I'll be buying my sheet this weekend! I am also saving for more silicone- it takes a wee longer than I'd like because I also have to save an extra $200-300 for shipping to Australia! lol!
Anyways, cant wait to share my progress with you all! :D

I'm so excited! Judging on how absolutely gorgeous your ice cream tail was, this is probably going to blow us all out of the water! Can't wait!!

If you have some left over liquid silicone, I would test out a patch that has both some green pigment and a ton of glitter in it to see how well it sets up.

Thank you both! ^_^
I actually used a fair bit of glitter in my first silicone tail, and it works really well! :)

This is so exciting! I can't wait to see the transparent fins especially. After learning about the lexan monofin, I have been all about looking up transparent flukes... Not much luck yet, but perhaps that'll change soon! You make an adorable Ariel, by the way!

Awesome! If you are going to do the Ariel tail literally, are you going to use a monofin? Dottie's new tail has a photo with a Zoomer on top and it looks like you could do a super-flowy tail with a piece of Lexan that size.
I have found that doing a pigmented layer of silicone then overlaying a glitter layer works much better than trying to mix the two together.

Thank you everyone! :D
I purchased the lexan and Poly-Zap (glue) yesterday, so it should be here at the end of the week! ^_^ the sheet of lexan I got is about 10cm smaller than a competitor monofin, but I dont plan on making the monofin that big- probably more like a Finis Wave size.
I was considering doing a very small monofin like a zoomer, Pearlie! But because I would like to use this for childrens birthday parties I still want a nice amount of propulsion. I plan on making the fluke long, so there will be plenty of flow left after the monofin! :) And doing the glitter layer last is how I did my last tail, too! ^_^
Mizuko
03-16-2014, 06:39 PM
I also plan on using Zoomers for the foot pockets XD the way I'm designing the fluke will HOPEFULLY cover the yellow of the zoomers with scales, but I will see how I go once I purchase them! hehe!
Kishiko

I literally just finished my lexan fin with zoomers! (About 6 hours ago:) you don't have to have a fancy plexiglass glass blade for a jigsaw to cut it. I used a fine wood cut blade with staggered short and long teeth on medium speed (the sending for plastic) and it cut perfectly!!! Just sanded the edges and voila! New fin!
good luck with your tail! Maybe instead of zoomers you could find a pair of white or even light green colored fins? Just a thought :P
Mizuko
03-16-2014, 07:23 PM
ah, thank you Kishiko! My only option was to borrow someones jigsaw to cut it with, haha! Please let me know how it swims! :D
I've had a little look around for green fins previously, but in the end I still swayed to Zoomers. lol!

I'm really excited to see this. I loved how the ice-cream tail turned out, so I can only imagine how beautiful this one will be!
I'm so excited for this, not many people attempt Ariel tails, and you make beaaauuutiifull tails. I can't wait to see how it turns out :yay:

I was thinking just yesterday about the possibility of a transparent Ariel fin; I'm glad to see that you're actually doing it! The glitter should do quite well to give the tail that modern-Disney-Princess sparkle!
The Zoomer-covered-with-scales approach seems an excellent idea; a smaller monofin to provide propulsion without drawing attention to itself. The final test of the tail fluke will come not only with the visual transparency but also with its motion; I trust the fluke material will be firm enough to appear to be providing at least some of the propulsion.

just some ideas, would adding a very small amount of macro pearl powder be enough to make it took translucent? as clean silicone will age over time. and what about the glitter nail polish would that work for your application?
Mizuko
04-02-2014, 06:39 PM
I was planning on adding a tiny amount of colour to the fluke, yes :) I still want it to be green (and sparkly... lol), but very subtle in comparison to the scales! :)
I'm not sure how well glitter nail polish will work, as I'd think there would be chemicals in the polish which may inhibit the silicone? I couldn't be sure. But using plain loose glitter has worked very well for me on my old tail, so I will most likely follow the method I used last time :)
Mizuko
04-03-2014, 06:42 AM
Just working out how the monofin will be shaped! :)
19804
It's not very big, maybe the size of a Wave? But it will mean the fluke will be nice and flowy! :)
i also need to trim the wide bit of the Zoomers a little- lol! They make my feet too far apart. Haha!
PearlieMae
04-03-2014, 08:57 AM
Loose glitter is best! Not nail polish. In my experience, thin layers of silicone stay clear, pouring it thicker than a quarter inch will make it milky. If you add any mica powders like Pearl Ex, don't waste glitter by adding it at the same time. You can do a glittery slime coat on top for maximum shine!
Mizuko
04-03-2014, 06:05 PM
Thanks Pearlie! :) Thats exactly what I did last time; the last layer was plain silicone with glitter through it! ^_^
MermaidMichelle
04-05-2014, 01:02 AM
Yes, Mizuko, you don't want your feet too far apart in the fluke. I had a similar problem with my homemade (by fusing two inexpensive swim fins together) monofin. I actually ended up welding them so that one foot was slightly in front of the other, though it didn't make too much of a difference while swimming.

Sorry for all the updates without photos! XD
I ordered one gallon order of silicone last Thursday (its been a week), as at the moment I cant afford the whole 2 gallon orders! lol! The reason I've done this is because I'm flying back to my hometown over Easter, and my scale mold is still there!! So I figured I'll get some silicone and pour the scale sheets while home, to avoid having to ship the molds back and forth! :P I'm getting a bit testy, because its been a week and the order hasn't arrived in the forwarding-services warehouse yet (located in California). I'm crossing my fingers it will arrive today or tomorrow, so they can send it out and it will be in Australia before the 16th!!
The lexan sheet has been dropped off at an acrylic-cutting store; we dont have the right tools to cut it ourselves at home, plus the professionals can give it a 'bullnose' edge (which is pretty much completely rounded!) to avoid cutting through the silicone! :D It should be ready to be picked up before monday! yay! :D

Finally got to test out my lexan monofin! :D I made a little video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbk-iBw-mN8
The only thing I would change would be to put the zoomers further down the lexan sheet, because it gives me a very lovely pointe but loses some propulsion! (luckily ballet has made my feet strong, haha!) But I am still very happy with it :) I know for my next monofin! :D
So tonight I will start sculpting! :D

Did you wear ear plugs when you swam in the video? I'm still trying to get used to the ears when trying to get lower in the water. I have a REALLY hard time sinking and swimming beneath the water. My body can't help but float to the top which is great sometimes cause I feel like I won't let myself drown, but.. I can't get beneath the surface of the water...

Meilyn, it sounds like you are not equalizing in the water! The pressure builds up and it can really damage your eardrums- just pop your ears on the surface and hold your nose at around 7-8foot and pop them again :) I dont use ear plugs or nose plugs because I like being able to feel the water, if thats strange? haha! And thank you! ^_^

I don't know if this can help anyway here in italy there is a man that made a fantastic Ariel's tail (you already know him is Yuri the italian man who made that blue tail that was looking like a coral) here you can see how it looks like (the fins are quite transucent and transparent you can see the mnof he by on the left fin)

Congratulations! You look fabulous! I'm so pleases it's working! I've been trying to destroy my lexan monofin prototype since January and it has held up beautifully! How do you like the fit of the zoomers? I couldn't find anything comfortable, so I devised a strap system.
I would kill to swim in that pool! So deep and clear! The only one I have access to is only chest deep, cloudy and overloaded with chlorine. I can't wait until my lake warms up!

They have stuff called Polycarbonate sheet or Suntuf, thickest is 3mm. Though I don't know if its the same material as Lexan or not. They use it in roofing and making greenhouses.
Its the closest one to me as I live where it is regional.

Ireneho, just watch out with the Fin Fun Pro, I got one and it is very soft. The polycarbonate in there is not very thick, and it also has very sharp edges. I would invest in a sheet of thicker polycarbonate if you can, I am really disappointed with the Fin Fun.

I plan on getting a lexan sheet that is about half as thick. Do you think that will be ok. I'm making a fully sequined neoprene tail (you can see my project in my signature), so it won't be as heavy as silicone. I honestly can't wait to see this come through! :D

I'm honestly not sure if thinner poly-carbonate is better, I'm sorry! It'll be much more flowy than my monofin, though. :) I know Pearlie made one and has had some trouble with it (I'm not sure if it broke or split?) but I've had no issues with mine as of yet! I've only used it 4 or so times, though, so it'll be interesting to see how it holds up with the weight of silicone!

Mine snapped on a test swim, due to my arrogant engineering. I tried to go with an extended design and didn't reinforce a crucial area.

Thank you for the clarification Pearlie! :D I'm hoping mine wont come into similar complications. I wish I'd stuck my zoomers a little further down the lexan- where they are really makes me point my feet and I worry that may cause the zoomers to eventually pull away or snap!

In the DIY part it suggests adding "stiffeners" to prevent breakage. I know your monofin is quite thick so it may not be an issue, but I just wanted to make sure you knew about it :) it would be awful if your monofin broke!!!

Woah, some very interesting things happened since the last time I posted!
Long story short, Disney Australia is having a field day sending cease-and-desist letters to small businesses such as party princesses and costume hire stores. Unfortunately the laws in Australia are very different to the US. Party Princesses in the US are allowed to continue because laws in the US states a company can only own the name of a product, not the image. So as long as the small businesses change the names of the princesses (eg Sleeping Beauty/Aurora is referred to as 'the sleeping princess') they are legally ok to continue business. Unfortunately, Australian laws are different: a company CAN own the image of a product, and it sounds like Disney has decided to crack down on this.
Luckily the business I'm contracted out with hasn't been sent a letter yet- but its been a huge scare for everyone doing princess parties here. The reason its been so frightening is: Disney is taking the party princesses costumes away. Not just taking some money- they are actually asking for ALL the costumes, props, etc that represent that particular character to be sent to them by the small business.
Now as most of you are probably aware, a lot of costumes are hand-made by the owner, so this is a huge blow. I myself make all my Ariel costumes. So yeah... I'm actually rather afraid now.
Guess I will still make this tail, but unfortunately I wont be able to use it for my business. It will have to be a cosplay, or used at non-for-profit events. I do NOT want my hard work being taken away from me. :(
Fifi Tigg
07-21-2014, 08:35 PM
WTF Really that is terrible! I cannot believe massive companies like Disney are so money hungry that they would do this to people just wanting to bring some magic into the world :(
Mizuko
07-21-2014, 09:13 PM
Yeah, its pretty awful. Most of us who do this business do it because we LOVE it, not for the money. Australia doesn't have a Disney store, let alone a DisneyLand/World; the gap was being filled by these small businesses. If anything it was helping Disney in Australia: all the merchandise parents buy for parties is pretty impressive! Most of us were unaware we were even doing something wrong, as we've been in business for years with no issues.
Its been a big blow to the entertaining companies here, we can only hope we fly under the radar :P
Mermaid Kate Silverfin
07-21-2014, 09:53 PM
That's awful, you guys are promoting their brand in Australia, and I think they should welcome that, rather than trying to shut it down! It's not like they are intending to fill the niche!
Aquarianne
07-21-2014, 11:43 PM
That straight up BLOWS. I've been doing this for years in the US, and they're pretty lenient on us with the C&Ds, so long as we don't try hard to make the costumes look TOO much like theirs, or use their names. US still has laws that allow them to serve us for "too closely resembling" their costumes, but as long as we make key differences in the designs and don't use the Disney names, they're fine. Mostly because of the reason you state, that it helps their business and makes way more sales in the long run. And I don't think they CAN legally take possession of your costumes. If the costumes are not their brand and being misused, but are homemade, then you should NOT have to turn them over. Disney is not the government, even if it thinks it is. It can't seize property. A lot of C&Ds make outrageous demands like this that are not exactly legal, hoping you'll go along with it and submit, but knowing they can just drop the request if you call them on their bullshit. Don't let them intimidate you. You can still use your tail for parties...just make a generic mermaid character who doesn't have red hair. Make it brown or blonde or something. Give it a generic name. They CANNOT prosecute you for that, they just can't. Not legally, not at all. Disney likes to make it rain C&Ds sometimes over here too, mostly near the parks, and they often make demands like this, just to legally bully. But they know they can't lawfully enforce it.
A C&D is just a piece of paper, don't let them intimidate you with it. They can't shut down your business, they can only tell you to stop using their characters.
MermaidMichelle
07-22-2014, 04:09 PM
I am with Aquarianne; give yourself auburn hair and tell children your name can only be pronounced in dolphin (I don't think Disney can get after you for using that Splash! idea....)

To me those kind of mails sounds like scam from 1 company who wants to take out all their competition. They write a letter/mail that looks that came from a very big company (like Disney), just to make small companies afraid and shut down their businesses. That way they can have control over what they want and have all the gigs for their own.
I had a scam letter like it before about a 'big' company that didn't want that I did cosplay commissions here in Belgium. I just ignored that letter and trow it away and made the commissions that where asked to make. Later I found out that I was right about that letter, it was just a girl that was very jelly that I made all those cosplay and get paid for it. So she wrote me that letter and hoped that I was afraid and stopped making cosplay.

Thanks everyone!
Thankfully I myself haven't received these letters, but one place locally and a dozen places on the East Coast have. Unfortunately, the letters are legit- everyone who received one contacted the lawyers firm who sent it and it is a legitimate firm working for Disney.
I already have my Mizuko image, so I dont really need to create another character to portray for my business :) I had just been asked by many people if I could offer them a realistic Ariel too!

You can make you (very nice) Ariel-tail, but give her another name and a little differed look on your site ;) I did the golden version of Ariel, that almost nobody knows about. Also when I'm Athena (Ariels mother) kids call me Ariel :) Athena's hair is more ginger than red and her tail is is aqua. ;)

Heck I get called Ariel in my blue and silver tail with reddish brownish blonde hair. Because that so looks like Ariel? Anyway my point, is Disney going to get mad at me for that? I don't think so. If anyone calls you out on it, just say you are in no way trying to be Ariel and then proceed to show them every green tail in existence. Lol

Can you get around it somehow by arguing that it is a parody? Like wear some geeky glasses or something. I know that is one way to get around copyright laws.

The reason its been so frightening is: Disney is taking the party princesses costumes away. Not just taking some money- they are actually asking for ALL the costumes, props, etc that represent that particular character to be sent to them by the small business.
If they try to take your property, get a lawyer. They, in no way, have a right to seize anything you make. They may be able to tell you not to make money off of it (by selling it or using for parties), but they CANNOT take away your private property. Not unless Australia is a HELL of a lot more different from America than I thought. Don't believe what they tell you. No one has a right to take something away that you own. Copyright issues are not about giving the thing to the person, it's about the USE of the particular thing. If I want to make myself a stuffed Flounder, Disney can't say "Hey, I came up with that character. Give me your property that looks like it." That's not how democratic governments work. Copyright stuff deals with INTELLECTUAL property and the misUSE of these IDEAS, not with actual, physical property. Even if you were running a store called "The Disneystore," Disney could legally either get you shut down or force you to change your name, but they could not TAKE the actual store from you. Why? Because brick and mortar is NOT intellectual property, it's physical property and its ownership is not decided by intellectual property rights.
Also, you can copyright an image in America. The University of Texas at Austin trademarked their Longhorn symbol. The Texas A&M Aggies were making a bumper sticker version where the horns were sawed off and the words "Saw Em Off" underneath it. UT went to court saying this was a misuse of their trademarked image, and a court agreed, so the Aggies added nostrils to the image of the Longhorn, which made it different enough from the trademarked image to not be an infringement. But even in that case, UT couldn't say "give us all your stickers!" They could only say: "Stop selling those stickers."

Thanks everyone!
Like I said, luckily I and the businesses I'm contracted out to haven't been 'served' as of yet, so we haven't needed to ask lawyers yet! lol! The one girl who has been sent this letter is, unfortunately, not going to hire lawyers. I wish she would, but really its her prerogative.
I lost my grandfather this week, so there will be another hold-up making this tail. Sorry everyone <3

Wow, that really sucks Mizuko (about Disney and your grandfather). Sending love and hugs
I had no idea Disney would do that though! What about people who sell cosplay costumes? Like if they made an Ariel dress or a Sleeping Beauty dress as a commission thing or through etsy, is that illegal??!! Or even selling mermaid tails that look like Ariels? :O I'm also in Australia, so this is scary :S

I'm sorry for your grandfathers; they are in my prayer! :mermaid kiss:
Disney is, sadly, quite infamous for control-freaking regarding its images and intellectual property. In one incident a few decades back, an American elementary school's children painted convincing images of various Disney characters on its walls and Disney cracked down on that! Hanna Barbara, feeling sorry for the students (and sensing an excellent opportunity for self-promotion), invited them to replaced the washed-away Disney images with their company's characters and organized a party for them. America is far more strict about copyright law than many other nations, though (a notable example being Japan; here in North America we thought of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers as a rip-off of Voltron: Defender of the Universe, yet by Japanese standards they are two vastly different examples of the same sentai form-together mecha subgenre).
I'm really not sure what the situation is in Australia, though....

Ok, I'm back :)
Its been a good month or so since I've even looked at this project. Since then I've umm-ed and arr-ed over what I wanted to do. Ariel is my favourite Disney character, I love her tail, but after all the recent crap with lawsuits, I've decided to leave it for another time.
However, I'll still be making a new tail. Just not Ariel's tail. I figured it would be best to make my OWN design again- especially because I have 1000 designs floating in my head, and half the silicone order sitting there patiently.
Thank you everyone for all your kind words and encouragements! Its been so helpful and I truly appreciate it. I'll post photos once my new tail is made, but it might not be for a few months as lots (oh gosh so much stuff...) is happening for me. :rollover:
