I was searching for "diving contact lenses" that could effectively replace any kind of goggles or diving mask.
They would have to be secure enough to not fall out, and not have any air space that could cause eye damage at depth.

Surprisingly, such a thing seems to exist:

However, nothing besides this article turns up.
How can such an improvement to large, unwieldy, sight-restricting things like dive masks not be more well-known?!

The date of the article confuses me as well.

Does anyone have an idea what's up with this, or whether something similar (purchasable) does exist.

These would be hard contacts that sit right on your eye, with a bubble of air sealed in under a top dome, like a second contact on top.

In 1963, hard glass lenses were the only kind of contacts available.

Darn! I was hoping for a photo of this "new" swimming lenses!

Some of the prescription ones are quite affordable, especially the ones that don't require a special order or script.

well, in the article it's mentioned they go over the entire eye, not just the retina.

I just never heard of this being developed/available, which is surprising given the unwieldyness of facemasks.
Unless the lenses didn't function at depth of course-
for example by damaging the eyes due to the mini-mini-airpocket between lense and eyeball?

Maybe its just one lens for people who have same power in both eyes?

I've seen goggles where instead of the plastic cover that goes over your eyes, they've used the lenses, so don't have that air pocket between them.
