Hello I'm trying to find a good starter fin or monofin. I'm a bit larger, having '47 hips, '43 waist, I'm 5'10 with size 9-10 feet as well.

Hi Myrna! Welcome!
Just search for mermaid tails for sale, and then look at the photos with kids in them, they're lycra fabric tails. Some of the sites do adults sizes too, and their tails have monofins inside. Whilst others you can have them make a custom tail for you if you provide measurements to them. You can also buy tail skins and monofin seperately.
There is Aquatails, The 2 tails, Magictail.de, Fin Fun, and a whole bunch of others I can't remember the names right now, but there are lots! See the Tailmaker Review thread too. There is some listed there too.

I started with a fin fun monofin and it has a thin lexan (polycarbonate) insert for the monofin. Honestly it does not give very good propulsion, esp for someone of our size. I much prefer to swim in my Finis Rapid monofin, which I cut a little fluke shape into (using a tin snips). I got it online for around $60. I might have my fabric tail (from fin fun) altered to fit the Rapid, if I can't figure out a modification to make the fin fun pro monofin stiffer!
