well, I been so wrapped up in things I haven't been able to get here. But I am now starting my second tail. I will be using my Tressie fluke design for this one, and adding some new things I think I am ready to try. I am somewhat settled now in Virginia Beach and am so happy to be working on a tail again.

I know the last one I made I did a video series for, but, this time I won't really have too many videos... I will try to take as many pictures as I can as long as my hands are not covered in goo....

This tail Is for my friend Teresa. We worked out the color scheme over 2 templates sheets, which I will post pics of later also

And finally, I will be posting another video of the process of making repairs done to the Bobbi fluke back on the other thread within the next couple days.

I am ready for the fun to begin!

Ahhhhh, LOVE the fluke!

Geez, I envy these mers' umph to just go and make these crazy latex or silicone tails. I've tackled some neoprene but all the molding and this and that seems like such a daunting task >_<

Good luck!!

Well, I finished sculpting out the fluke. i must say, I really like how this one is looking.

I already started making the fiberglass mold. Sadly, while putting on the last coat of fiberglass, it started raining. It turned some of it white. I don't think it will cause any damage though. I will be pulling it free in the morning.

So after the 2 days of sculpting and 2 days of layering fiberglass, the mold is complete. I pulled it this morning and letting it continue to dry. I will post pics of the mold later for all to see.

Trident, I have to work on it nonstop when I do. I use an air dry clay so I have to try to keep it wet while working on it. think working 12 hr days on nothing but clay. It almost didn't make it to the second day and I was worried I would of had to start over.

Second mold is complete. I wanted to show a size comparison of the Bobbi fluke design to this of the Tressie fluke. I love them both.

Here is a pic of the completed mold for the Tressie fluke

Love your progress so far, how many layers of fiberglass did you use? I haven't used fiberglass without gel coating first, did it work out getting the details to show up?

Mermaid Clara
04-11-2014, 10:15 PM
how much paint would I need for a full latex tail? I plan on mixing the Createx paint into the latex (in case I scratch off some outside paint) then painting on all the other colors with an airbrush.
how well does the paint cover?

Mermaid Julz
04-11-2014, 11:26 PM
It covers quite well. I would also suggest ordering some perma wet. i mix it in with the latex before casting just for that reason. After you paint it make sure you heat treat it thoroughly. After that cover it with some Perma wet or if you can find a "clear" latex (its not really clear) you can get a stronger airbrush for it with a wider bore and paint it on too.

Ashton, It really depends on how thick you make your layers... I just use enough to get a base covering that slightly thick... then I go and make the next layer with the cloth for fiberglass, and then finally a couple other layers on top. each person has their personal preference on how to make their molds. I don't think there is any wrong way as long as the mold stays intact and does what you want it to do.

So, i been slow to keep this updated, so i am gonna update in one long post.....

I finally got the mold set and brushed in my latex to do my dirty cast....

http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/2014-03-31161019_zps5f5049eb.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/2014-03-31161019_zps5f5049eb.jpg.html)

Then, after I got 4 layers deep I pulled it off to see how it came out.....

http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/2014-04-05114454_zpsd23f10c7.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/2014-04-05114454_zpsd23f10c7.jpg.html)

I was glad to see most of the ridges stayed, but there were many little spots that drove me nuts so i went back and fixed them with a new idea I tried......

http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/pinkhotgluegun_zps541c70fc.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/pinkhotgluegun_zps541c70fc.jpg.html)

I tested this to see how it would do at filling holes and and how it reacted with latex.... it would not bond so now I had a cheap fix to go and redo bad spots and not have to buy more fiberglass. i love it! best 5 bucks I spent for the glue and the gluegun.

So, then i went and started to fill in my mold with my latex that i had colored....

http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/2014-04-07132733_zpse57e7ac4.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/2014-04-07132733_zpse57e7ac4.jpg.html)

After a few more layers it looks like this....

http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/2014-04-12164412_zps1fb81eff.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/2014-04-12164412_zps1fb81eff.jpg.html)

At this point I was out of my original bucket of latex. I needed more. And lucky for me the god heard my prayers..... This showed up and was delivered to me today...

http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/2014-04-12134419_zps0a6dbfc2.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/2014-04-12134419_zps0a6dbfc2.jpg.html)

thats right another 5 gal bucket of latex. and it could not of arrived at a better time!

So, while the first half of the fluke was drying I had to go and drag out my scaleboard from under my dad's camper trailer.... It was so nasty.... it needed a bath..... so I gave it one....

http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/2014-04-12144830_zps80aa593c.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/2014-04-12144830_zps80aa593c.jpg.html)

After an hr drying in the sun, I got to work on the scalesheet.....

http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/2014-04-12164353_zps524f71ff.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/2014-04-12164353_zps524f71ff.jpg.html)

around 8 pm this evening I had 5 layers down, and 5 more to go.... well maybe just 3... we shall see. I like keeping it durable like my first tail which has 10.

So, you are now all caught up with this tail... and I have pics of my repainted tail going up on my old thread.... so make sure you check them out...

well, I got both halves done and tomorrow we will put them together. I cannot wait myself to see how it comes out..... I really love this fluke design. Now, I had ask a few people ask me why my molds are not super smooth and therefore see the flaws of the mold.

I don't see them as flaws. I see it as a touch of realism and character. Nothing in this world is perfect. from a distance we see smoothness and flow of colors cuz our brain says its that way. But when you get up close, you see the detail and notice its sometimes rough.

Yes, I could go and polish out the molds so everything is super smooth with no defects, but that I feel takes a little something away...

Just think of all the stories someone could think up to describe to someone while in their tail why this looks like that or this. " I got tossed against the coral in a storm" or " I fell asleep on the beach and the crabs started to eat my fluke" ... all ssorts of wonderful magical reasons why it looks that way... it adds to your character.

So, if you see something and go damn, thats kinda rough looking.... ask yourself, is everything always so smooth in nature?

Mizuko
04-22-2014, 08:23 PM
Looking great Julz! :D And I agree with the roughness; my home-made silicone tail has little 'faults' all over it but I like it, it really makes it feel organic! :D

Couple of questions... Do you use anything to make the latex come out of the mold easier? and is the latex really runny??

Can't wait to see more ^_^

Mermaid Julz
05-17-2014, 03:38 AM
the latex pulls out of the molds nicely without anything. its one thing I love about it. As for if its runny, not really, I mean, its not much different in viscosity than paint you would buy at home depot to paint your house.

Hi Julz, I've been watching your tail making and love your tutorials xx
I have a question about the latex;
Could you use latex in a piping bag and hand squeeze individual scales straight onto the fabric? Instead of making a scale sheet? :mermaid kiss:

Mermaid Julz
05-27-2014, 10:06 AM
Fifi, I have never tried that and I don't think I will. Latex starts to dry when exposed to air. Due to this it would slowly start to clog the tip of the pipping bag. But it might work for a bit. If you are going to try that on a fabric tail, rub a layer of latex into the fabric first for a better bond. My tails are pure latex, but I know how it reacts with my clothes. it don't want to come out.

And now to my update....

I've been working my new job, so its cut tail time down alot. I still try to do what I can. I am currently doing seams, and I am trying to make them as hidden as possible. So far, its looking that way, and I am so happy about it. I have also started with some fins. right now they are still drying some before I pull them from the molds.

Here are a few pics. which include the fluke.

Besides one little bubble pocket in the one hip, she told me it fit her great. So, that will be take care of soon.

but back to the sculpting.... I worked hard most the night sculpting out spikes and one other new part that will be revealed when the part is finished. This is the Dorsal!!! Yes, I am attempting fins and dorsal for her tail! First attempt at this, but I feel that it will go smoothly. I don't think there will be issues for me since I have become so relaxed with using latex. Lots of trying new things like I said. I cannot wait till I get it all together. ok, due to how I am doing the complete dorsal, no more photos of it will be shown. I want it to be a big surprise how it looks.

Ok, so here is the latest update....

I've been working on this when I can and my day job is not in the way....

Still got to put on the heel fins...

so, its been alot of work since my last update.... and a few pics to add for people to see.....

First are a couple pics of when I was working on the heel fins.

http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/tail%202/2014-07-04162644_zps616f38a0.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/tail%202/2014-07-04162644_zps616f38a0.jpg.html)

Next is figuring out the placement of the spikes and placing them down...
http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/tail%202/2014-07-04163305_zps03e7ab48.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/tail%202/2014-07-04163305_zps03e7ab48.jpg.html)

Then it was back to covering up those bead seams....
http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/tail%202/2014-07-04220108_zpsb71f13de.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/tail%202/2014-07-04220108_zpsb71f13de.jpg.html)
http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/tail%202/2014-07-04220307_zps232e68d9.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/tail%202/2014-07-04220307_zps232e68d9.jpg.html)
http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/tail%202/2014-07-04220320_zps77c4c991.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/tail%202/2014-07-04220320_zps77c4c991.jpg.html)

Here is a close up of how I am doing it
http://i841.photobucket.com/albums/zz332/blazindizz/tail%202/2014-07-04225958_zpsafaae0e6.jpg (http://s841.photobucket.com/user/blazindizz/media/tail%202/2014-07-04225958_zpsafaae0e6.jpg.html)

And there you have it, I still have 4 of the spikes to cover up, and then flip the tail and finishing attaching the fluke. I am really trying to pay attention to the detail and keep seams to a minimum.

Well, I have started painting the tail. I am still need to get my perma wet for it when I am done, but for now ... paint paint paint.... Its slow and steady and my lighting sucks. I will have to get more pics when I can get it out into the sunlight.

So, we are stuck. Waiting for funds to get Perma wet. In the meantime I've made a few other jewelry pieces...

Ilyena

I might have to resort to using perma-wet if the gloss medium doesn't work out, but so far I'm having decent results on my latex arm bands with the diluted medium :D, now we wait till it dried properly. Plaster molds seem to take the colour out of the exterior in contact with the plaster.

So the tail was finished up yesterday afternoon. A bit longer than i expected to take, but we had a few minor setbacks. Here is a video of her unboxing so you can see the finished product.

well, here is a quick video we did for her testing out her tail. She needs to learn to dolphin kick, but she said she really had fun in her new tail. Now to get her to not rub on things so much so paint flakes(like standing in it creating pressure points). Its ok though.... used a new product on the paint to seal it, so, i can touch it up quite easy..... least it didn't all come off like mine did the first time it hit water....lol

She did lose some weigh from when we took measurements, but I think we can fix that without much hassle.
