Is mermaiding for you guys playing a character or is it more being your self and saying this is what I was born to do. I don't know how to word this, for my self this is something that I take seriously and I love to do it, I don't need to hide behind a character.
I don't know its late. :)

I totally get you. For me personally, mermaiding is all about letting my true colors flow, and being who I really am. Sure, I may have an alias that I go by, but it's not a character. It's me :)

Most mers are like this, we may have names, some may have 'mersonas' but in the end its really all about being ourselves and spreading our creativity and ideas with eachother. That's what sets us apart from most other communities like this. We don't need to hide behind a character to feel happy!

Most of us take it seriously! Its not about hiding behind a character. :) I am a mermaid whether I am in my tail or not, but if children at a party ask me where I live/what I eat/etc I'm not going to give them a story about how I drive to work everyday and eat a sandwich, I'm going to tell them about my life under the sea. :P

It's like LARP-ing or the same mentality as living history for me.

Still mostly me, but I have a different name (too many reason to not use my real name, and not enough reasons to make me want to use my real name in spite of it) and I behave a little bit more "character/creature" appropriate.

Character atm. I'm still thinking of my mermaid background and how it will fit my personality, likes and dislikes etc.

I need to play around with the idea that I spent my life on land and didn't know I was a mermaid till much later in life.

This is it for me, except replace mermaid with hippocampus. :P I'm a hippocampus parading a a mermaid- it's a lot easier sporting a tail and still being a bit human!!!

Ichthyocentaur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichthyocentaurs)? :) "In late poetical Greek mythology ichthyocentaurs (or ikhthyokentauroi) were a pair of centaurine sea-gods with the upper body of a man, the lower front of a horse, and the tail of a fish."

Looks more like a sea serpent tail to me.

But with the ancient humans, everything that lived in water was called "fish" anyway :p

For me personally I think it's kind of a hybrid of both. I'm kind of becoming what I really want to be, I guess...? If that makes sense...? It's the same with my burlesque persona. Like, it's ME even if I do use an alias, it's just me to the 10th power.

I'm reviving this thread because I have something to add lol
A lot of people call their tail a costume, I personally hate the word costume because its not what it is (well kinda) but for me its more a part of me, does anyone else feel this way or am I just weird? :P

For me, it is just a costume. I can respect that others would feel that it is an extension of themselves, kind of like colored hair or tattoos. Just because you weren't born with it doesn't mean that it's not part of you.

I don't understand this question. Here are some possible ways it can be interpreted and my answers to them.

Do you believe you are actually a mermaid or merman? No. I'm definitely a human.

Do you believe that in a spiritual sense you are a mermaid or merman? This question is too metaphysical for me to answer.

While swimming in a tail, do you imagine you are someone else? No.

Do you consider your interest in merfolk to be a part of your identity? Among other things, yes.

If it were possible to become a mermaid or merman, would you? It's hard to say, but I'd seriously consider it.
