Hello, Merfolk of the World!

I'm Nicky. I don't have a Mermaid name yet, but it's not important. I don't even have my fins fully grown :D Everything in it's due time.

I come from a beautiful city of Liepaja located ashore of Baltic sea in Latvia. It is a city of wind and weaves caressing the whitest sands you've ever seen on the shores of Baltics. But I have left this town seven years ago and came to Germany, where I live now in Hannover. Here I study Informatics and... now I swim. I've always been a water child. I loved the waves, the taste of salt on my lips. Despite that I've never been a good swimmer. I'm capable of keeping myself on the surface and staying out of trouble, but now... I'm not sure what triggered my new passion. My boyfriend gave me a pair of bi-fins and off I went with them in an empty non-swimmer pool. Half an hour later I was already in the deeper waters... And a month later my first monofin arrived. It is about half a year already since I've started growing my fins :)

I am currently in process of sewing a costume. Just plan fabric to get a feel of it. Now I'm positive about sticking with Merfolk for a long while! I was in many ways inspired by Mermaid Melissa. I as she also have a passion for all living creatures: not only in the oceans, but on land too. I figured it would be great if I could inspire people to respect nature by getting their attention while swimming around as one of the mystical creatures. It is not a common hobby here in Lower Saxony, so the chances are pretty good :) I'd also like to take part on a water rescue course and join DLRG. DLRG is a non-profit non-government organisation with an aim to aid people in water either by providing lifeguards at pool or coast, or teaching little kids to swim. It is great to have the possibility to train with them: we have a nice 12,5 meter pool and only three or four people train there. The DLRG guys say I'm great with my fins and I'm really proud of it! :$

So... That's about it. I still have a lot to learn: do more sophisticated tricks, hold my breath longer than a minute and so on...

This was taken last Monday by my boyfriend. He said if I'm going to do this longer, I'll have webs between my fingers and gills growing in no time :D

By the way, my monofin is Hydra from SoDive or Sweammer (but it has to be a fake one, because there is no logo on it and it was too cheap, much cheaper then elsewhere).

Welcome Nicky!

There are quite a few mers from Germany here too, and mermaiding slowly gets more popular.

I hope you're not sad you left the Baltic Sea.
While it's very pretty to look at, it's darn cold without a suit on...and there are frequent accidents due to the chemical warfare weapons and other hazardous materials that have been dumped in after WW2, so be careful if you ever swim there!

Your monofin looks like a genuine Hydra. Maybe you got a lucky deal on it.

Hi, Catluna!

I've already found some Merfolk from Germany and even from Hannover! :D It's not a bad thing, that there are so few - one feels exceptional doing something that hardly anyone does :P

I'm happy with my monofin. It does look like Hydra and it does what it has to do, the main difference to the original is the absence of the "Hydra"-inscription on a blade. I've tried one on while visiting a boat exhibition. Anyway, my Hydra-wannabe is there 'cause the main point was not wanting to pay a lot of money for something I was not sure will be used on regular basis. So this fin is for practice and is going to be demolished some day :D

P.S.: I come from the North, so I find it kinda "cosy" when swimming 8° water :D The most pools are too warm for me...

:jawdrop: Holy mackerel!
You'll find ample swimming opportunities everywhere then
All those nice clear German lakes and rivers below 10° all year round...

me, I'm sadly a tropical seasnake. I can't even put my tailend into a pool colder than 27° lol!
Totally fail for an ocean lover :p

Unfortunately I'm a salt water creature and have some kind of fear of fresh water... But since the seashore is so far away... So I'm trying :D
The typical water temperature in summer was at about 15° while air had about 25°, so it's pretty hot for me when air temperature goes up :) But I have nothing against chilling in warmer waters of the south. I suppose I'll grow to like them :D

Hi Nicky,

welcome to the forum. And as NordNixe said, the Baltic sea isn't that far from Hannover (at least from the distance - not counting the traffic jams on the A7 and A1 :p), and in Summer it is quite nice there.

Thank you all for the warm wellcome!

And, yeah! It will be fun going to the shore (it's not impossible! :D ). Apart from that I'm visiting Liepaja from time to time...
