View Full Version : Getting in and out of the water the elegant way

Hi there!
I didn't find anything answering my question, so I'll just ask it.
There are times when Merfolk has to sit on a side of the pool with their fluke in the water. Getting into this position is relatively easy: just push yourself up on your arms and swing yourself on the pool side.
Getting back into the water is trickier: I have not yet figured it out. Swinging the fluke up and going into the water head first is a great idea, but I can imagine damage done to the tail and even bruises. On the other hand, Merfolk doing a cannonball dive... not so pretty.
Any ideas? How do you do it?

Face the water and face plant?
Edge your butt right next to the water and keel over sideways?
Do a handstand and dive in fluke first!

We basicly just flop into the water. There is no easy way to put it. LOL , Or at least that is how I get back into the water.

You mean something like sliding into the water, but minimising the contact surface? Might work.

I might actually be able to do that... will have to wear a helmet though :D

Flop... like fluke first and voilą?
Anyway, my point is I'd like to figure something out that looks a fair deal like diving head first, but without splashing on the water with a whole torso (does not look good and does hurt sometimes). To pull something like that off one has to jump which is a bit hard out of a sitting position.
The reason for my interest is: I will swim in a channel in a small boat harbour and will have to get into the water either from our boat, or from the runways, which are (depending on water level) about half a meter high. Anywhoo... such a trick can be very impressive.

I meant like how this mermaid gets into the water, either in sitting up position or rolling into it like she does!

Or roll over onto your tummy and slide backwards into the water!

I usually sit on the edge of the pool and lower myself down with my arms. The water is cold so I'm always hesitant to get in. Either that or I just roll in from the side after putting my tail on. :rotfl:

Thanks, Eva!
So it's more rolling or slipping inside for the most of Merfolk and less fancy jumping :D

You could always "dive" in. Similar to the way they teach children to dive from sitting on the edge with their feet (or your fluke in this case) in the water. Maybe try stiffening your legs as you "dive" off and use your heels to push out away from the wall?

You're welcome! :D

That's a nice idea. I'll try that and report if and how it worked. Thanks!

Could be tricky, as my human is turning into a merman soon too :D
But thanks!
