I didn't see a thread for this (just someone mentioned it passing once) so I thought I'd post about it!
Really cool product that Daphne posted about in the NC Merfest group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ncmerfest/permalink/477388252388953/?stream_ref=3) is a nose plug product called Sinus Savers! It was created by a surfer who was sick and tired of all the sinus infections he got from surfing. It comes in two different sizes, and is made of clear silicone. You put it up your nostrils, and a small bar keeps everything solid and keeps water from going up your nose- all without the warped look or pain-in-the-fin of nose clips!

You can buy them directly from the website here: http://www.sinussaver.com/about-us.html
Or on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Sinus-Saver-Water-Sports-Plugs/dp/B00GAAJGBS

On Amazon, if you have Prime you can get free 2-day shipping! Be aware however, that if you want to return them, they charge a $6 return fee and $5.74 flat rate shipping (so $11.74). However, if you have sizing issues, contact them directly- they have great customer service!

To determine sizing, we suggest using a group of Q-Tips to measure the size (diameter) of your nostril. If you can fit 6 or more Q-Tips tips into the opening of your nostril, we suggest the larger size. For 5 and under, we suggest the medium.

Be aware that there is some flaw in this sizing method. It's a creative way to measure (I can't really imagine how else you could size a nostril without taking a ruler to it in the mirror :P) but it's not incredibly accurate. I could fit 6 brand name q-tips in my nostril fine, and a large was too large (the base, or most narrow part, was larger than my nostril opening). A few others have had the same issue. So maybe 7 and up order a large, and 6 and below order a medium. Use your best judgement!

Sometimes the sizing is just a tad too large, as Daphne and another customer on Amazon noted, you can turn the cup part of the plug inside out and trim them to help them fit better. Just take a tiny bit off at a time until they fit. Also, note that they're silicone and sticky, so use a little bit of water to help them slide in.

Here's the size differences between the medium and the large (click to see larger image)

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc227/winged_mermaid/th_547E0289-2A09-42DF-BE1A-815EEC926590.jpg (http://s219.photobucket.com/user/winged_mermaid/media/547E0289-2A09-42DF-BE1A-815EEC926590.jpg.html) http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc227/winged_mermaid/th_B9117C65-2F59-49D1-AF8B-A40D01E9499D.jpg (http://s219.photobucket.com/user/winged_mermaid/media/B9117C65-2F59-49D1-AF8B-A40D01E9499D.jpg.html)

The very base (smallest part) of the large is 20mm long and 8mm wide.
The medium has a base that is 15mm long and 5mm wide.

I know a lot of people are ordering these becuase we've wanted a product like this in the community for a long time! If anyone is brave enough to trim the bridging gap for lower visibility, please post your results!

I literally can't do bubble rings or backflips after 4 years of trying without water up my nose. LOL if it's fresh/salt water it doesnt bother me, but Im in chlorine a lot. so it burns

I hope they work for you! I hate the feeling of water going up my nose... I can feel the bubbles slinding and taste it in the back of my throat? I dunno, just not very pleasant.

Huh, I could use something like that! Ime the kind of mer who like doing flips and spins and turns in the water (yeah yeah show off haha) but I always have to blow a lot of air out of my nose, and it can look distracting on video. These could also help for blowing bubble rings on the bottom of the pool, if you haven't yet mastered how to keep the air in your nose :)

I ordered one from the website, not amazon, and got it today. It's a snug fit (got the medium) and a bit big still, so can't wait until they come out with the women's sizes. I'm planning on testing it out at the mer meet up next week, also planning on doing a written and video review. :)

Yeah, these things make my nose look like a cow! They fit and work well but stretch my nose ever so slightly (they're just tight enough to get a good seal). I'll have to take a picture sometime. Functionally they're fine. Aesthetically they're iffy.

Maybe I got the wrong size...

Winged Mermaid
03-21-2014, 05:02 PM
Possibly. I know Daphne trimmed (the cup part of) hers and that helped hers fit better, though she said she probably should have gone with a medium. Maybe if you trimmed it, it would help? I know I got the wrong size- my nose went from narrow to full on Miss Piggy :P Like I said in my post, the base, or most narrow part, was larger than my nostril opening. It was so much so that it folded over on itself (I lubed it to get it into my nose), making it non water tight undoubtedly. But I contacted them directly and they sent me out a medium for free! Awesome customer service.

Morticia Mermaid
03-21-2014, 07:20 PM
Same happens with me iona. But I got the medium. I can get it in fine and such. But it takes my noise and makes it 2-3 times wider than normal. I'm going to order again when they come out with womens sizes. Maybe they will be well encouraged to get to making them when they see they have an even larger market

Ooohh... this could be a literal life saver for mers in the southern USA where the brain eating amoeba has been reported. The way that it gets to the brain is by contaminated water going up the nose. I'll have to look into this.

Kelphinea_Kelp
03-21-2014, 07:46 PM
you know I always wondered.. don't they have thoughs nude colored foam ear plugs? I would personally just instert them into my nostrils and maybe just use some tweezers to pull them out or push them in further. *shrugs* prob doesn't sound to safe but idk... I would give it a try. LOL

Winged Mermaid
03-21-2014, 08:20 PM
That's an exelent point BayouMermaid! This could make people feel safer and possibly even saves lives in the south where it's become a much bitter issue in the past several years!

Kelphinea_Kelp, two things about using ear plus for nose plugs is that you have to have a dry clean nose when you put them in, and even then they're finicky. Also, if they get lodged in there you could end up needing to go to a doctor. Ask any ER nurse, things getting suck up one's nose happens a lot :P But you're welcome to try it out and report back in another thread :)

Kelphinea_Kelp
03-21-2014, 08:35 PM
well I personally can open my nostrils or flare them rather... very wide so most things that seem to fit into my nose in a relaxed state can easily be taken out in its flared state. Not sure if its my ethnicity tbh im black white mix so my nose has a thicker fuller form. LOL

I tried it over the weekend. They mostly worked, though I hadn't realized how weird it would feel having something up my nose. I couldn't leave them in for long cause it was too strange and distracting, but if I can get over that feeling then this could be a really great product.

not very noticeable I'd say.

I have a very narrow nose though, so I'd look absolutely ridiculous with something bloating my nostrils :p
not to mention it's quite unpleasant to have something IN your nose, and the depth-and-pressure related problems that could arise.

I'm going to stick with my translucent noseclips :)

What are they like for flat Chinese noses?

Echidna

they're probably better for flat or broad noses than noseclips!

just as I think noseclips are better for thin and highbridged noses.

AniaR
03-31-2014, 04:49 PM
so I bought a M and they're way too big hahaha Seanny and I had a good laugh trying to get them in my nose. Now that being said, I can trim the excess stuff that hangs down, they do make my nose look funny, but it's the centre septum piece that actually hangs down like a nose ring on me. it's pretty funny if I get a chance I'll get some photos.

If they ever come out with a S I'll try again, but honestly I might even be an extra S!

-jesus, Raina, that picture scared me when I scrolled down-

I ordered one the other day, because I am terrible about getting water up my nose, and I love it. The goggles I use are kind of finicky, and using a nose clip would break the seal between my goggles and my face. I don't have that problem using the Sinus Saver tho. It was weird at first, but after a couple hours of swimming I didn't even notice it anymore.

Whenever I use nose clips they always pop off my nose. >.> And since I have a lot of trouble with preventing water going down my nose, especially because all I really have access to is a pool which means chlorine, I'm gonna give these a try.

So long as they fit right and block out water I think I can deal with the potential nose ring thing. :P

Man I'm glad I didn't order large ones. The mediums don't even fit properly in my nose. They double up on themselves and I can still get airflow in and out. I'm kind of thinking the size chart they've got needs to be altered a bit; don't get if you don't have the roman (or similar) nose type and can shove at least 10 qtips up your nose — for the medium. :/

Kind of feeling like I shouldn't have bought these at all, but I guess I'll find out how good their customer service is now.

Extra small and small now show up as an option.

The description of sizing on their website now states:

"To determine sizing, we suggest using a group of Q-Tips to measure the size (diameter) of your nostril. If you can fit 8 or more Q-Tips tips into the opening of your nostril, we suggest the larger size. For 6-7, we suggest the medium or small. For 5 and under the small or extra small. If there is any doubt, we suggest choosing the smaller size."

Mine just arrived yesterday! I got the extra small on Amazon. I think it is going to work, but only just. I think these are probably more comfortable for someone with more slitted nostrils. Mine are pretty round. I definitely can't breathe through my nose with this in and seated properly though, so that's cool! I feel like the pig shape it gives my nose would be easier to slim down in editing than trying the remove a nose clip, so I'm happy with my purchase. One note- they are still quite big. I have a prominent, hawk-bridged Mexican native nose and the extra small just fits. My bf is 6'5" and African-American, and currently has the medium but is thinking about trying a small. Little cute dainty noses may still be out of luck with this brand, lol.

I got mine awhile back. Honestly I'm torn about them. I want to like them more than I do since its almost easier not wearing them and a bit of water still gets in my nose. I will say they did get me used to having water up my nose by just letting in a small amount so I don't need them any more.

Jaffa, do you have more round or "slitted" nostrils. My boyfriend's are perfectly round with a low bridge and the plug is not really the best fit. Mine are almost too round as well. I really have to stuff it up there to get a seal. I think the designer probably has one of those aqualine European noses where you can see the septum from the side, haha.

Does anyone here that's tried these have a nostril piercing? I have a nose bone (straight post that's a bit wider at the end) and I'm wondering if I would even be able to wear these with it, or would it just push my piercing out?

Unfortunately, I have a tiny nose/nostrils and a medium is too big! Maybe I will try to make a custom pair.

Marijke, maybe someone here can get them and mail them to you? PM me and we can make arrangements if you like.

To determine sizing, we suggest using a group of Q-Tips to measure the size (diameter) of your nostril. If you can fit 8 or more Q-Tips tips into the opening of your nostril, we suggest the larger size. For 6-7, we suggest the medium or small. For 5 and under the small or extra small. If there is any doubt, we suggest choosing the smaller size.

I have a nose bone as well. It can get a bit uncomfortable against my piercing when I first put it in, but I just move it around until it feels better. I've never been worried about it pushing my piercing all the way out.

I love my sinus savers as they have allowed me to do flips in the water, lie down and blow bubble rings, and swim upside down. The super-mild discomfort is worth it to me to be able to do all of those things.

Yeah, but you can't order them direct from their website anymore and the amazon link they do have does not ship to Canada. Canadian amazon does not carry them. I used their contact us link to ask them where I can purchase in/from Canada and still have not received a reply (that was a few weeks ago). Found one re-seller on ebay but they were like 3 times the price. I want to try them but I don't want them that badly.

Woohoo! Mine came in the mail! :yay:

I went by the q-tip method and ordered a small, and it fits great!! The actual plug part completely disappears into my nose and can't be seen at all, and I'm going to try and paint the middle bit gold and pass it off as a septum ring ;D

Perfect fit, never felt even a hint of chlorine up my nose, stayed put no matter how I swam. I cannot recommend these over regular nose clips enough, they're wayyyyy more comfy and I didn't have to adjust it every three seconds! So long as you can get the right fit, totally worth it! ;)

If you blow hard enough you can get some air around them, but it does dislodge them quite a bit and then you can get water up your nose.

Swam for the first time on Monday. They worked great, but I did have to readjust it several times before getting it into a good position. Towards the end of the swim (so after 45 min) I did find that if I dove to the bottom of the deep end I'd get a sharpish pain in my right sinus and right ear. Not sure if it just shifted up too high or what but it hurt. Since it didn't hurt most of the time I was there I'm pretty sure it's something I can avoid.

Why would you want to blow out of your nose if you have nose plugs in? I always thought you did that to keep water from going up your sinuses.

I like my sinus saver but it feels like there is always stuff draining down my throat when I use it. Maybe it is a hair too small? I can't really tell if it is chlorine or just my sinuses draining from being plugged. I agree, a (faux or not) septum is an easy way to hide them, but they aren't too noticeable anyway.

I am awful at "closing" my sinuses when swimming. I can close my throat so o dont swallow water, but I sinuses still flood when going upside down or doing tricks.

When I discovered SinusSaver I was beyond thrilled. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM! They make my life so easy. I bought the XS small size and they are just a tad too small. Water doesn't leak too much, but over time if I'm not paying attention. So I went a size up to the SMALL size and they are perfect. No leaks, secure, and comfy. If I had any complaints it would be that the inside of my nose is ticklish and after taking them out i tend to sneeze several times.

I will try to find video/photo where I am wearing them to show what they look like. But for me, they are pretty inconspicuous. There's a small bit of silicone across my septum, but it lays flush against my skin and isn't super noticeable.

I will edit this post once I find photos/video where you can see the SinusSaver in action

Great to hear a good review of the smaller sizes! I use a regular clip because I seem to be physically unable to close my sinuses... Doesn't matter how I do it, water finds it's way in!! I'd love to try one of these because it seems less conspicuous and the regular clippy doesn't fit super well... doesn't stay in the right position and eventually starts slipping off. Things need to be SECURE for super-fast merswimming!

Looking forward to your update!

Mer-Crazy

I bought one a little while ago (I'm pretty sure it's an extra small, might be small I'll have to double check) and while it feels like it makes my nose huge I've looked in a mirror and it looks fine and it doesn't hurt or feel uncomfortable.

Khaleesi Daenerys
04-22-2017, 05:54 AM
Maybe I'm just doing it wrong but the package says extra small. The first time I tried I couldn't get it in my nose at all. The second time I was able to get them in but not all the way, and it hurt. Not just a little bit it hurt. I looked in the mirror and it did make my nose look bigger. :(
Maybe I just need an extra extra small? Which they don't make. Or maybe there is something wrong with my nose. There was no bleeding when I took it out, so that's good. I'll try it again after googling it.
So I guess I'm the only one with this problem then.

Mer-Crazy
04-22-2017, 05:38 PM
I feel like it'd be near impossible to do it 'the wrong way' since you're literally just putting it up your nose. Is your nose smaller than average? From what a lot of people have been saying about them the 'average (medium)' size is way too big for most of us, so everyone was getting the small or extra small just to be safe so if the 'extra small' is only just fitting people with normal noses (I like to consider my nose normal anyway) then if you have a smaller than average nose then it stands to reason it may be too large for you. I know some people (I think it was Raina) talked about cutting them down a little bit?

theMerFanc
08-20-2017, 04:16 AM
I got a medium awhile ago and it was too large so IO just stuck with the crappy nose clip I had. Well last weekend I lost my clip int he pool so I sucked it up and bought another sinus saver. But I over compensated and got an XS. I tried it today and its too small. Water still gets into my nose and the plug does a great job of making sure it stays in my brain. When I pull it out its this gorgeous waterfall of snot and chlorine... Toats attractive... So, this might be gross but does anyone have a small that they would like to sell or trade? I have an XS and a medium, the medium has never been worn because I couldn't get it in my face and the XS was only worn for about an hour and has been thoroughly cleaned. HALP

Ordered mine recently! Flipping expensive compared to nose clips and I'm supposed to be trying to save money right now XD but the clip kept falling off -_- so really hope this thing will be the right size and work way better! I've heard good things.

UPDATE: Tried mine today! It was the small and I probably could have done with a medium so it leaked a tiny bit, but I don't go too deep a lot so it's not really an issue, I just didn't want a massive puffy nose o-o' but it worked great otherwise! Happier with it comfortwise than a nose clip and it doesn't fall out. Tho I often pull it out when having trouble talking without sounding like I've got a cold.
