Hello everyone.

I'm interested in building an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in Seattle and would love to hear from anyone who has gone through the process. Specifically, I’m curious about the zoning laws, permitting requirements, and potential challenges when it comes to construction.

Are there specific neighborhoods where ADUs are easier to get approved, or should I expect to face resistance from neighbors? Also, what are the costs associated with building an ADU, and are there any local incentives or programs to help offset those costs?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Building an ADU in Seattle is possible with up to two units allowed per lot. Detached ADUs can be up to 1,000 sq ft on lots as small as 3,200 sq ft. The permitting process may take a few weeks, and costs range from $100,000 to $300,000. Accessory Dwelling Units Bellevue (http://evergreenremodelers.com/Accessory-Dwelling-Units-Seattle) are generally supported, but some neighborhoods with active associations might present challenges. Overall, the city is in favor of ADUs to help with housing demand. There are no direct incentives, but impact fees are reduced, and financing options like home equity loans are common. It’s important to review local regulations and consult professionals to ensure a smooth process.
