Aah! My fin just arrived. It is so beautiful, not to mention huge. It is absolutely ginormous!!! I am going to have to work my core out a ton. I can't wait to go swimming in it! To bad I am stuck at home due to my post concussive. Holding your breath cannot be a smart thing to do while healing your brain. :/

Just one question. The foot pockets are quite a bit to large for me, any ideas on how I could make them smaller? I think I will probably have to end up getting neoprene booties, but I would like to avoid it if possible. And where is a good place to buy booties?

Surf or Dive stores are your best bet.

Glad you got your fin. You could get neoprene socks, I got thin ones. My foot pockets are actually a tad small, but not uncomfortably so. lol

This is a really stupid question, but I have to ask. Which way do you wear the fin? I keep seeing pictures with people wearing it with both the side with the toe holes and the other side on top. Both seem comfortable to me?

Mermaid Jaffa

I don't know. It does look like a fin you can wear either way.

So I got my oceanika on craigslist. It was the size I would have ordered, but it's a smidge too small. I've modified it a little to be more confortable but it's still a bit tight. I've been wearing neoprene socks, but most of my problem is across the top. I cut it down on top to make it easier to slip into...but it still hurts over the top of my feet.

Mermaid Jaffa
02-13-2014, 07:44 PM
yep. and that's why I rather wait for the adult sizes.

Mary Marine
02-13-2014, 11:16 PM
Coyote, once the adult sizes come out in April you might want to buy a bigger one and sell your current one. Even though it's modified I'm sure it would still sell.

Maybe...i dunno. It was allright with the socks...but they got a hole in them and I tried to cut then and glue them in the pockets but the way I didn't didn't works. I can wear size 4 little girls shoe, and it's the size I would've ordered per the online measurments anyways... hmmm

Mermaid Azira

I don't know about the skins, but I emailed them and asked if they would be offering colors and adult sizes a few weeks ago and they said they would be. I think someone else may have too.

Unrelated: I love how every single merfin is different, because of how the yellow/gold is mixed in.

Haha thanks. I know I need to work on my technique tho. I can't do any tricks. XP So many of the oceanika vids on youtube are of kids tho and you don't really get to see how pretty it moves in the water. Can someone give me dimensions of the large? I'll upload an image in a second with the dimensions I'm looking for...

18873

I know its a lot, but I'd really appreciate it. I'm making a skin to use for a dry performance and I'd eventually like to get a Merfin but for the performance I was just thinking about using a cardboard cutout.

Other option is if you could just give me the overall height and width (1&2 in the image) I could just have it printed to scale and use the picture as my actual template for a pattern.

I found a site that supposedly has the dimensions... Coyote, I'm just wondering if you'd check the with and length against your medium. The site claims the medium is 27.4 inches by 29.5 inches. If it is correct I'm going to assume that the dimensions of the large are also correct and I'll just have a picture of the fins printed to scale.

I don't know if anyone is following Mahina Mermaid on Instagram, but on a photo they posted recently one of their fins looks really orange. It's probably just a pink fin in different lighting combined with a filter but it looks so tangerine. Probably nothing but I figured it was worth posting.

If anyone is wondering about the picture, to look at the fin, it's the one with the blue car in it.

Mermaid Jaffa
03-12-2014, 12:25 AM
Maybe its one of their new colors?

Naiad Rose
03-12-2014, 07:51 PM
I'd love an orangey color a lot more than the pink. I keep hoping they'll start selling the Merfins in the US so I won't have to cave in & do the $65 shipping from Australia. But you're probably right that it's just the photo lighting. Either that or it's Mahina's personal fin. The fin and tail she wears is gold-orange, and her fin is a little more elaborate than what they sell. But I didn't think her fin separated from her tail.

Mary Marine
03-12-2014, 10:41 PM
I finally gave in and ordered my Merfin off the official website instead of waiting for Carla's Swimwear to get them in stock again. Shipping is more expensive and slower, but at least now I'm guaranteed to have it in 2-3 weeks. I can't wait!

Mermaid Jaffa

Even though I already have another brand of fin, I still want one in either red or purple!

Mermaid Azira
03-15-2014, 10:59 AM
So they posted again, this time a picture with lots of little tiny pictures in it, and it is really starting to look like it is a tangerine merfin. It could just be the filter again, but I think she used a different one. Also it's not her tail since two fins and the tail are lined up in one of the pictures.

I dunno. Just thoughts

Well they just posted this on instagram: 19424
If you can't read the caption it says "Are you getting excited?? We are!! Adult size #MahinaMerFins are on the horizon!!"

So what do you guys think? If the size of the whole fin, not just the footpocket is bigger than that of the kids fin, it must be huge! Also I can see a lot more women wearing orange rather than pink. I'm bot sure about the leggings though...

Mermaid Jaffa
03-20-2014, 09:52 PM
It looks way bigger than the Wave!

Mary Marine
03-28-2014, 07:06 PM
At long last my Merfin arrived last Monday! So far I've taken it swimming twice and I am in love with it! It's so much bigger and stiffer than my last monofin, it really propels me through the water. Even the lifeguards noticed it is faster. My lap time is down from 30 seconds to 20.

The only downside is it's a bit big in the foot pocket, so I was struggling to keep it from rubbing against my ankles and giving my blisters. Instead I got a blister AND bruises form how hard I was tensing my feet to keep them in place. Some sock and sock liners stopped the blister from getting worse, but now I have to wait for the bruises to heal. That's a temporary fix though, I need to buy some neoprene socks. Any suggestions? What brands do you guys wear to swim in?

MerEmma
03-28-2014, 08:34 PM
I bought several pairs of neoprene socks for Christmas but I haven't worn them otherwise I could tell you whether or not the brand is a good one or whether to avoid it. My spandex socks prevented it pretty well though. :P

As an adult who got a child's large oceanika, I had to cut the foot pockets larger because it was cutting into my skin, brusing, and blistering. Now that it's cut, I still have a near constant bruise, blisters, and pain, but it's just the price for that fin in my opinion. My competitor cuts the back/side of my heels, and hurt the top part of my foot. Different fins fit differently.

Mermaid Jaffa

Orange!

Side story: On Wednesday of this week, I had just taken off my tail skin. Some kids came into the Wave Pool, I only had my one piece swimsuit on and my merfin. "Look! Its a real mermaid!" They come closer, little girl says to her little buddies, "See? I told you it was a real mermaid!". After that more kids in the pool, cos its after school learn to swim lessons, more shouts of "Mermaid! Mermaid!" 15 mins later, I left the pool as it had gotten a little bit crowded in there and I didn't want to accidently hit anyone.

The learn to swim kids were in awe! Not that I was there to amuse or anything, at least I hope to inspire some kids, that you can do more with swimming, when they can see what else can be done when you know how to swim and float.

I recently found out that Mahina has made the merfin in adult sizes..... I have one of the original "bigger kids size" that I had to cut and alter to wear, it kept giving me cramps sadly.
I totally wish I didnt cut it as I could of sould it to a younger mer and bought the adult one 😕
My tail uses my Hydra monofin though ☺

I definitely love the flowy look of the merfin and used to get lots of looks and smiles from adults when I swam in it ☺

Mine is a green ☺

That would be a fantastic monofin option for fabric and latex tails. I love my current Mahina fin, but something about the shape is rather limiting for future tail designs I have in mind. Its core shape is narrow and boxy save for the little fin tips that flip outward, and I like wider flukes. The Orca fin is exactly what I want, so I really hope they go ahead with production. I can't imagine why they wouldn't, considering the success of their original design :)

Mermaid Jaffa
12-30-2014, 07:39 PM
Yes me too. The current shape is hard to design another fluke around it.

Between an Oceanika and a Wave, which gives most speed?

Mermaid Kelda
01-15-2015, 04:12 PM
I'm almost positive it would be the Oceanika (Mahina as I think they're now called). The Wave is a lot thinner than the Merfin and tbh not much better than no fin at all - it just adds shape to a tail skin.

Yulia
01-15-2015, 04:40 PM
Really? Wouldn't have thought.
The Mahina looks so soft. I have a Wave, and I get some good speed out of it.

Raayvhen
01-15-2015, 04:44 PM
I wouldn't necessarily say soft. Its definitely flexible. Its also really thick and dense.

Yulia
01-15-2015, 04:57 PM
Flexible is a better word yes. I thought a stiffer blade was better for propulsion, but I may be wrong.

Mermaid Kelda
01-15-2015, 05:35 PM
I didn't find the Wave to be all that stiff, though. Maybe it's just because the straps keep coming off, but I find it difficult to get very far in it (I'll have to start wearing socks). Glad yours works for you, though!

Try searching for the Merfin on youtube, maybe there're some videos that'll show you swim power?

If you cut the tips that curves out, do you lose much power, or is it just esthetic?

Aesthetic. Main part of power is the huge space in between the foot pockets and the fluke tips. Sorry I don't know what its called!

They have been promising an Orca fin for sometime, hopefully they start selling it this year, as it was supposed to be released last year. But they were too busy with the Merfins to start the other ones.

I too have both the Oceanika/Mahina and the FINIS Aquarius and though both give much more power than swimming without a mono fin, I would say the Mahina has more power, is more aesthetically pleasing, and also stays on your feet. The design of the aquarius includes a single rubber strap that goes across both feet and when powering through the water/doing tricks it often slips off no matter how tight it is adjusted.

I had to break in the Mahina the first few times - I have lots of nice blisters even in socks!

I finally trimmed off the fluke tips! It bore little corner holes into one of my tails. Though not very visible I became so annoyed at the fin, I thought, "That's it! You two are coming off!"

Which makes me wonder... Has there been accidents? Or is it in reply to that video? You know the one...

I just ordered a merfin, and I still plan on using it in a full tail. I agree with PearlieMae; they're covering their tails in case of accidents. I think as long as you practice good swim safety, like never swimming in your tail without a spotter, it should be fine.

If you haven't noticed the fear of fins is rampant right now and pools are banning everywhere. Many fin makers have had to be more forth coming with safety

I'm thinking I'd like to paint my merfin, and I was considering using Plasti-dip spray, since it's a flexible rubber paint. Is this a disastrous idea? My fabric tail isn't going to completely hide the merfin, and I'd like it to match the tail more or less.

Now I use the neoprene socks and I've never had a problem since.
For sizing reference; I'm tall and wear a women's size 10, so the men's size 7-8 in these fit me perfectly.

I use Sharkskin socks for scuba diving and find them fantastic to wear under diving boots or just by themselves.

"The comfortable 'micro fleece' layer is next to the skin and 'wicks' moisture and sweat away from the body to help keep you dry. The second middle 'technical' layer is 100% windproof yet breathes to regulate body temperature while stopping windchill. The third outer layer is a nylon/lycra blend for abrasion resistance and 4 way stretch. It is also UV resistant for sun protection and has a durable water repellent finish (DWR) to provide a protective shell that 'sheds' water. The three layers of Sharkskin when combined together provide the equivalent warmth of a 2.5 to 3mm wetsuit but unlike a wetsuit the Sharkskin Chillproof material stops windchill. Sharkskin Chillproof is neutrally buoyant, anti-microbial, odour resistant , itch resistant and machine washable"

I also have the long sleeved top.

I think a black mono fin is a great idea, it seems more of a 'masculine' color rather than the orange and turquoise she has out. Granted in my opinion color should not have a gender attached to it, but I am glad that there is a variety in colors now.

RNHime

I'm REALLY excited to see a solid color merfin. Granted, I would have preferred a pale color (opaque white! ♥) but I understand that black is more appealing for most, and pale rubber may have staining issues. Has anyone successfully painted one of these babies yet??

I have happily used my Kid's size Large Merfin all summer but I would definitely consider picking up an Adult Small in black, it would be so much easier to *match*, or design a sequin tailskin for... *secret plotting* ...But I'm also super thrifty so I'm hoping that a US retailer will get them in and they'll go on SALE somehow! XD

Anyone have experience with how Adult Small compares to Kid Large?? The Kid's fin I'm using is an exact fit for me, perfect once it's on and I love the fact that it does not slip, though I need to invest in proper thin scuba socks (burned through the sport socks i was using this summer). Any idea if the Adult Small would be okay for me with thicker neoprene socks? Any suggestion on what brand/size I should try? My feet are about 23.5cm in length, technically a size 6.5US but I generally have to size up because my feet are wider, yet the Merfin has never pinched my picky toes!! Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me with this!

Mermaid Jaffa

The adult merfin measurements from tip to tip is 26-27". Measured and guessed because I trimmed off the fluke tips on mine.
And the height from heel strap to fin tip is 25.5"

Someone else did a comparison, its even bigger than a competitor!

I wear 3mm neoprene socks with my merfin as it is a medium and my feet size is 7.5. Its very loose without socks but it doesn't fall off.

Thanks, I have seen them laid on top of one another so I know it's a little bigger overall. I'm okay with that (though I'll probably swim even faster in a size larger, geez), I was just wondering if anyone was in the same boat as me, able to use two sizes. If so, is it better to have the smaller, snugger size, or the larger worn with thicker booties. Thanks!

Looking at The Merfin size chart I should really be able to use both. I was afraid the Kid's would be too narrow and pinch my toes but they have never bothered or rubbed them!

I'm just so glad I took the chance on a Merfin. Seems like they were made out to have some of the narrowest foot pockets of all monofins, but I guess the rubber stretches enough to accommodate my tootsies. =P

Here is a Q for you, since you own a couple Adult sizes. Is the Medium fin larger than the Small? I'm curious because the kid's sizes are scaled so smaller shoes sizes have smaller fins. Just curious if they did that with the Adult molds as well, or if the fins are the same size and just the foot pockets get bigger. Thanks!

Fin blade is the same size across all shoe sizes. Its the foot pockets that are diff sizes.

This is the same for all monofins. Fin blade is always one size for adults and smaller blade for kids, the only changes are the size of foot pockets.

Thanks so much for that input! I know that is usually the case, and I figured it would be for the Adult sizes anyway. I could be wrong, as I've only seen my Merfin, but I think the SM & M kid's sizes are actually scaled down a teeny bit? It looks that way in Mahina's MerPod videos with the "wild children", and you see shots of the various small fins hanging on poles. Those vids were shot before the "lil" merfin came out, which is obviously a whole 'nother mold of it's own.

I know with other sport brands like Finis the blade is always the same, just foot pockets change.

The website says they're out of black mediums. :( Carla's swimwear has them in but the cost is just shy of their free shipping and everything else on the site is hoorendously expensive. I'm in need of a new top, but not for $40+ bucks I'm not.

Carla's Swimwear has always been super expensive. They're like a boutique shop but with stuff you can get elsewhere for cheaps.

I just received my Mahina Merfin a couple days ago and went swimming with it this morning, so here's a few videos so you can see how the fin looks:

If the videos aren't showing up, you can follow me on Instagram (jellydockter) where I posted a video or look up "Mahina Merfin" and you will find plenty of swimming videos! My quick review is that this monofin is AWESOME. I looked at basically every other monofin out there and I think this was absolutely the best option for me. I was swimming in a shallow pool so it was a little difficult to maneuver at first, but still flow-y enough to work in a small swimming area. It's also large enough and provides plenty of propulsion to swim in open waters. The design looks incredibly beautiful underwater. The only thing with this monofin is that if you're not wearing neoprene socks, your feet might get a little sore after swimming for a long time. I bought the size (large) bigger than my measurements to leave room for the neoprene socks; but even when I swam without the socks, it took a long time for my feet to get sore and the monofin didn't come off at all when I didn't want to (even though it was very large on my feet without the socks). It also wasn't impossible to get on and off, though I had more trouble when I tried to put it on dry. Your best option is to do it while in the water. I swam for hours and it was very comfortable the whole entire time. I love that the heal straps aren't adjustable so I don't have to worry about breaking or them coming loose while in my tail. This monofin is a little pricey, but definitely cheaper than a competitor. It was $118 new on Amazon including shipping and tax. If you decide to buy this, please buy it one size bigger than you need and factor money to buy neoprene socks into your budget. I don't want you to hurt your feet! The socks I got were about $24. I'm washing the fin and socks right now with some gentle laundry detergent in my bathtub [emoji5] Thank you and I hope this is helpful!!!

Woke up to this on my doorstep this morning! The tracking number wasn't working properly so I wasn't expecting it at all, I thought it was in Australia still!

Overall I'm pretty happy with it. I'm interested to see how it swims but I'm definitely going to need neoprene socks, it's already rubbing. It took me a little while to get on but that's probably less to do with the fin and more to do with me hurting my hands when I fell down a flight of stairs yesterday.
Also it feels very different to wear than my hydra so that's tripping me out a bit haha.

I loooove the colour and can't wait to take it for a spin!

I used to keep lotion or lube to help my feet slip in. My mahina wore through socks really easy so eventually I just had to build calluses. :/

It's not too bad while I'm wearing it in the water. It slips on and off easily when it wet.
The first time I wore it swimming it hurt sooooo much but last time I wore it for a good hour and a half with no issues. Guess I'm building up calluses too 😊 Ah well my feet were already munted from years of roller derby no biggie 😂😂😂
