Mermaid Trade Market?

I just had a great idea pop into my head while I was working on a top. How would everyone think/feel about a thread or section specifically for those open to trading?

Example: Me, I'm working on making a new tail but have no funds for the sequins I want/need for my tail. Person B has a bunch of said sequins, and wants some accessories. So I offer to make person B an accessory or 2 of their choice in trade for the sequins I want/need.

Ideas? Thoughts? It could be a place where people could list what they are looking for, or what they are offering that they are willing to take a trade for.

I think it could be a great way for people to get things they want/need for mermaiding without having to pay an arm and fin for some things.

(Admins- felt this would be the best place to list this. If there's a better spot, I wont be upset if you move it:))

I think we need ground rules just like secret Santa. E.g
-tracking numbers
-must commit to mailing it ( no backing out after other person mails)
- no giving away anyone's personal info
- take part at your own risk
- not responsible for customs wait times etc

If we are going to set ground rules like that- we need to enforce them with some form of blacklist for users who violate.

Well, to start, use a format something like this, perhaps? Feel free to suggest otherwise.

Example:

I AM LOOKING FOR: 2 fancy Sand Dollar hair clips

I AM WILLING TO PAY: $20.00

I HAVE TO TRADE: Bag of blue sequins, 12mm, appr. 3 oz., estimated retail value: $6.00 US; Custom made gaunlets, silicone, estimated value: $30.00; 2lb. bag of seashells gathered on my vacation in France (see photo)

(appropriate photos will be attached to postings, negotiations will happen through private messages, items/postings are to be removed from thread once transaction takes place)

We're still waiting on finalizing the server move so other things are on the back burner, but it's a pretty good idea!

I think formatting would be good. Especially in the title of the thread. Like "T" could be "an item that's up for trade" and "W" could be "item wanted for trade". So a title of a thread could be "T- Used weight belt" for a weight belt that you have and want to trade for something or "W- Custom hair clip" that you want someone to make you a hair clip.

I agree that there would have to be blacklisting for those who don't follow through.

Open to suggestions and brainstorming :)

Completely agree on having a black list. Even though I don't really like it, there are/will be people who "break the rules" and can't be trusted.

Love the idea of title formatting too. I think the combined formatting for title and post would be good together. Listing what you're open to to trade/take as trade would really help keep people from having to guess, and would make for more successful trades :)

Also I'm thinking there should be a minimum post count to be able to trade. Not sure right now how we'd enforce it, but I could look into it. Maybe have a mod for the trade section. 20? 30? higher?

They have to have posted a certain number of times on the forum before they could trade. 30-40 seems reasonable to me.

Post count is good, but someone could just join and rack up that many posts in a matter of days with a bunch of no-substance posts if they really wanted to...

Or a join-by date combined with activity? Like, someone needs to be a member for say six weeks, have posted an introduction thread, and is reasonably active on the forum (not leaving little, one-sentence or one-word remarks, but actually replying to threads and having posts that seem to have some serious thought and coherence to them - if that makes sense. I tried to explain that as best I could in English, lol. Sorry.)

That's why a mod would be handy. Posts made just to rack up a post count would be a no-go. The mod could look at their recent posts and see if they were actually posting things with substance or if they were just obviously wracking counts. Though you're right, maybe a wait period from the join-by date would be better or could help.

Maybe a week-two week and 40 posts? I dunno I'm just throwing numbers out there ;) It's all on your guys comfort level. Also users are free to put in their own posts "Will not trade with a member that has less than X amount of posts, or has not been a member for less than x amount of days/weeks/months." Like I said, it's all about the comfort level that you guys can feel safe trading at.

I think leaving it up to each persons discretion for now is a good idea. It can always be changed later if issues arise.

Perhaps I should have made that "willing to pay up to"...meaning that if someone didn't have something valuable enough to make a trade, that they could supplement their trade with money. i.e. looking for shell bra, I have earrings to trade - but the earrings' worth is considerably less than the bra. But twenty bucks and the earrings make it a fair trade.

Or, keep money out of it altogether. I just meant to offer an option.

Send things of equal value to what the person has.

For example, PearlieMae has a new shell bra worth x amount of money, then I send an item that's worth that value. Or a few items to make up that value.

Just a thought.

Okay...It was just a suggestion. I was a part of a trade thread on a photography forum, and the option/inclusion of money made trades easier, probably because photography equipment is easier to estimate actual worth than something aesthetic like mermaid-wear.

I kind of like the idea of possibly supplementing with money. Like say all I have trade is a necklace, but I love someone's top and they love the necklace but he top is worth more. I think it's fair to be able to supplement with money, especially since it's the persons decision what they do with their money. Just a thought.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't some of the thread here locked by pod membership? Could we do something similar? Maybe with a trial program (new traders are announced so that everyone knows they are new)- then full membership after a few successful trades.

I'd rather not I am not in the pod I'm supposed to be in because I didn't agree with the zoning so to say. There's so few Canadians we wanted our own Canadian pod. But we have a thread in the union of the north pod.
