Has anyone thought about making a mermaid Polespear? or just a mermaid spear, but actually having it sharp so they can protect themselves from big-ger fish? I've been toying with an idea for one, but I'm still working it out. (Also, I really hope I put this one in the right spot this time)

Eh, I've fiddled with the idea, and have this seal bone staff thing with shells on it (no seals were harmed in the making of this accessory, I found the bone and cleaned it up), but that's for dry use only. And in my opinion, of there are fish that are big enough that you feel like you want protection, you probably shouldn't be swimming there anyway. Theoretically, though, it's a good idea, just so long as you don't actually plan on using it to stab things.

I swim in the ocean, so yeah, barracuda are big and like to get too close, but when you poke them with something sharp, they go away, therefore, mermaid polespear idea was formed. merely for poking abilities only. no blood drawn. I've got the pole part, but I need something sharp enough to scare fish away, but dull enough not to cut somebody

You could probably make something from a kids gardening tools.

yep, I thought about this a while ago (the thread should be somewhere in here).

Like you, I wanted something long and sharp to hold off large predatory fish, to keep them at a distance (going against a shark with a small diving knife or nothing at all isn't very reassuring :p ).
I've been looking into medieval spears, but I'm not sure how well they'd hold up in the water since the shafts were made of wood.
I've also tried finding a useable trident, but no luck (the only trident-like thing is a fishing gig, and that's really small, designed to spear small fish or frogs, ew.)

In the end, I'm still searching, because there don't seem to be simple spears or tridents that are durable, actually useable, and affordable as it would either have to be a replica, or some historic artifact.

I can imagine though making something myself, since for a spear, all you need is a long shaft and something sharp on the end.

A fishing gig? I didn't think about that. it would be good for poking away fish, but how would one go about making that mermaidy?

^wow! Sure it has 7 points instead of 3, but that's a cool fishing gig!

the thing with gigs is; they're tiny.
Not much bigger than a fork.

I think putting a fork on a stick and calling it trident wouldn't look too merfolky.
not to mention it'd be pretty useless as protection against anything bigger than a toad.

.....I'm sorry but...
I'm just too interrained by the mental picture of poking at a larger fish with a little tiny fork tied to a stick :$

but on another note, you could get a pole and tie an arrow head or shark tooth to the end :)
like a under water...spear thing...,
and to give it a descriptive look you could tie some pretty fish netting to it too :)

I'll order the Dragon Spear :D
The reviews say it's a solid weapon (and cool to boot).

You think it will hold up in water?
Hopefully it's not too heavy to swim with lol.

Hehe! It says there in fine writing, it can be custom made too! So you could have just the one prong on it.

It looks like it is quite affordable, ranging from US$135 and upwards.

Now the thing is, is the shipping going to kill your budget?
