Using something other then clay for tail mold?

I have a fair amount of styrene left from another project-could I use that and some tubing to cast my fluke mold? Did anyone else not use clay?

I know some mermaids used Foam sheets cut to size for the scales... How would Styrene work? Is it anything like Polystyrene foam packing?

Was it Mike van Dahl who used tubing to make his fluke molds? I forget. Anyway you could probably use anything you like that won't melt in your mold or something. If you have an idea, test it out! It might work just fine :)
