View Full Version : Facebook Profiles for Pseudonyms

(Note: After typing all of this up, Mernetwork logged me out and didn't auto-save. This is my second time typing this. Yay.)

Since a few mermaids have moved their pages to a profile format due to Facebook's habit of cutting down exposure for pages, I've been considering doing the same. I wanted to have a profile from the very beginning, but here's why I haven't made the jump yet:

Facebook's Terms of Service state:

(Under Safety)
"1. You will not post unauthorized commercial communications (such as spam) on Facebook."
Posts which get you seen could be argued to be commercial communications. In addition, comments about booking, etc. could be seen as commercial in nature.

"10. You will not use Facebook to do anything unlawful, misleading, malicious, or discriminatory."
It could be argued that "pretending" to be a mythical creature is misleading.

(Under Registration and Account Security)

1. You will not provide any false personal information on Facebook, or create an account for anyone other than yourself without permission.

2. You will not create more than one personal account.

3. If we disable your account, you will not create another one without our permission.

4. You will not use your personal timeline primarily for your own commercial gain, and will use a Facebook Page for such purposes.

10. If you select a username or similar identifier for your account or Page, we reserve the right to remove or reclaim it if we believe it is appropriate (such as when a trademark owner complains about a username that does not closely relate to a user's actual name)."

This right here is the gist of my concern. Creating an account under anything other than your legal name, or creating another account, is prohibited.

(Under Other)
"1. If we fail to enforce any of this Statement, it will not be considered a waiver."

I'm no lawyer, but I believe this means, "Just because other people have gotten away with it doesn't mean it's no longer a rule."

From their "Community" page:

"On Facebook people connect using their real names and identities. We ask that you refrain from publishing the personal information of others without their consent. Claiming to be another person, creating a false presence for an organization, or creating multiple accounts undermines community and violates Facebook's terms."

This is similar to the "Registration" section of the terms of service, and concerns me. I've known people who have gotten BOTH accounts (character and personal) banned because they created a profile under a pseudonym. I use Facebook too much to connect with family and friends to be willing to lose it.

If anyone has additional information or interpretation, please feel free to comment. Please be nice, I'm not accusing anyone or saying anyone has done something bad. I'd love to find a way to make this work!

I just don't care I know so many people who do it and fb doesn't do anything after reporting even. I have a friend who has his account and a games account. I know legit celebs who use it under another name. Facebook can bite my shiny scaley butt lol

I admit, they make it REALLY hard to care, they've screwed Pages over so many times already...I'm just the type of person that worries super much, so every time I think, "I'm gonna just do it," it's immediately followed by, "BUT WHAT IF I GET BANNED FOR LIIIIIFE?!" XP

they never ban on first offence and from what I've seen it takes a lot to actually get banned from fb anymore, typically it's minor suspension

So here's my take on it:

Just do it.

No, seriously. I had three FB accounts: my main one, my mermaid one, and one I used for gaming way back when before I forgot the password. My cousin has two (one with her real name, one with her Cosplay/Steampunk name), her husband has two (I don't know why, he just up and opened up another one), my partner has three (his regular and two gaming ones), my friend Siros has at least four, and he uses them ALL to promote his business and artwork.... Lol.

If you're not posting porn or actual spam, FB probably won't care. Shit, even hate-speech gets overlooked a lot on FB.

Oh, and I guess now you can't post breast-feeding pics, because of whatever stupid reason people are offended by boobs and babies eating from them. But I digress, because my guess is none of the things I just mentioned are going to be put on your mermaid FB anyhow.

Lol, probably not, Anahita, XD Thanks for the input!

They went thought a purge a while back where they were deleting pages of pirates, mermaids, cosplayers, ect. But if they crack down on you, all they'll do is delete your "fake" account. They won't ban you from FB.

Also, sorry about the errors. It's driving me and Malinghi nuts too. We've actually gotten a few months worth of hosting from our current host refunded cause the downtime is appalling. We're still working on moving over to the new sever where hopefully downtime will be slim to none.

No worries! And that's good to know about the purge. :-)

Anyone know how to put your mermaid name on there? I try and it says they make people use real names. I did but when I tried to change it in settings it said the same thing. I see mermaids on FB all of the time, how do you guys do it?! Please Help!?

They use a page, not a profile. Like for a business or a celebrity where you like the page :)
