View Full Version : Tail or Trip: Need Advice!

So my tax return is due in the mail any day now, after a bit of a kerfuffle with Revenue Canada. I'll be getting about $1250 back, but now I've run into a bit of a problem...

Originally, I was planning to use a big chunk of my tax return to commission Morticia for a neoprene tail, which I can afford. But now, my boyfriend has sprung the idea of a trip to go see a Metallica concert over the summer... And I'd really love to go (I haven't been off this damn island in nearly a decade, so getting away for even just a couple of days would be a dream to me), but... I'm worried that I'll only be able to afford one, not both! D:

My heart has already been set on this tail for a while-- my first tail! But at the same time, my boyfriend would really love for us to go on a trip together, just the two of us. Metallica is one of his all-time favorite bands, too, and he really wants to go see them.

Looking at the cost, the trip and the tail are both within the same price range. The trip would be about $100-$200 more, maybe.

If I did get the tail, I -might- be able to get my parents to pitch in on the Metallica trip later on as an early birthday present for me, along with me saving up-- they've done similar things for my sisters in recent years-- but at the same time... I'm really stubborn. I really hate asking for handouts like that.

IDK, mers... What would you do? I might be able to swing both-- the concert isn't until August or so-- but... If you had the choice between traveling to see a really cool concert, and your first custom mer-tail... Which one would you choose? I don't know what to do! D:

Definitely the custom tail! :D

But that's just my opinion ;)

I seldom listen to music, and if I do, only to real music of course, not that dreadful noise people nowadays label "music" lol.
so I wouldn't even have to decide anything, of course I'd take the tail.

But you're you, so you'll have to choose for yourself ;)

@Caltuna -- See, I'm the same way when it comes to music! And I do really like Metallica (not nearly as much as my boyfriend though), doubt it's not really the end of the world if I never get to see them in concert. Even my all-time favorite band, Poets of the Fall, I'm not crazy about seeing in concert, but that's just because I'm not normally a concertgoing type of person. I mean, if I get the opportunity, I don't mind going-- I've seen Elton John and Chris de Burgh before-- but it's not really a huge deal to me if i don't.

I guess the thing is here that my boyfriend really wants to go, but he'll only go if somebody goes with him. He really wants me to go, because we both know I'd have a great time if I went, and I don't really want to disappoint him.

Still though that tail... D:

I agree. There's a deadline for the concert and you can wait a little for the tail and save up.

My opinion is based on the fact that I'm hard of hearing so concerts are a big NO for me

Hmmm...Have your boyfriend pay for your trip since they aren't YOUR favorite band. $1200 bucks for a trip to see a band that you are kinda of meh about, or a tail you can use for many seasons... I know my choice.

(Full disclosure: My beau is in a Metallica tribute band. I see them for free! Metallica isn't my FAVORITE band, but they aren't going to be around forever, so I can see your boyfriend's eagerness to see them - and it is a kickass show...but we are talking about TWO HOURS.)

I know this will not help but it depends on a few factors. 1) Have you ever been to a concert before? 2) Which one would you prefer to do or have? . If you have not been to a concert an the option is to go or not to go it is just that simple. Now a concert you go to just once an tail you can use many times. There are pluses to both sides of the question an minuses as well. You are the one who is going to have to make the final choice. It mainly depends on which one you would like more. If I had to choose I think I would pick the tail. Even though I have never been to a concert, but that is a one time deal. A tail is a many time deal.

we're kinda biased here, we all want tails haha

but the way I see it, is spend money on experiences when you can, because they're experiences and they don't come around all that often. You may feel like you can save again for a tail. I say this because I ran into the same issue.

I had the money for my new merbellas tail last year, but then I had the chance to go see Lady Gaga in concert in Montreal. I've had a pretty shitty year health wise, and I ADORE Lady Gaga. But because she never comes to my province I never thought it would happen. So I decided to put my tail on hold (and I know, that's easier for me to do because I already own some. But I did save for a super long time). I'm really happy I decided to do lady gaga, I'm going with a best friend, it's going to be an awesome trip and it is giving me something really positive to look forward to. And guess what? 6 months after I paid for that, I got the money again to pay for my tail.

So yeah, it changed up my timeline, but seriously, who says you can't have your cake and eat it too? Just takes creative planning Hahah

I agree. Experiences and time with loved persons are most precious and if the trip was good, memories will last a long time and make you happy. You can always buy a tail later :-)

You guys all have really good points about the trip experience! :D I talked to my boyfriend about the concerns I was having, and he told me that, honestly, he's not totally sure himself about going or not-- He spent a lot of time going back and forth on planes last summer, as well as the last few summers before that, and he's not sure if he wants to go to this concert or just stay home for a summer and relax, do some more localized roadtrips here instead, or something. He's also toying with the idea of maybe waiting until September to go to Toronto for a TCG tournament he's really interested in (which he knows I'm not all that into, either). His personal suggestion was that I should go for the tail, and if he decides on what exactly it is he wants to do, we'll get it figured out and he can help cover my share of the travel expenses and such if need be.

I'm still gonna wait a liiiiittle bit just to be certain, and see how he feels in a couple of days of so, before I actually get my tax return back and decide 100% on whether or not to put in the order. I might also bring up the whole possible-early-birthday-present thing regarding the concert to my parents as well, just to see what they say about that.

Ffffffff this whole thing has me so flustered!

I'm wondering if you can just kind of do the opposite of this? Pay for/secure funds for your trip now and have your parents pitch in for the tail as part of your birthday present later? Its not any more begging than you were already mentally prepared for - and that way you can swing both

Personally I'd pick the tail. I'm biased as hell and have zero desire to see anyone in concert - but I tried my best to give you a nonbiased answer already so thats my real answer hahahah "Tails tails tails tails~ " I hope you end up figuring it out alright

@Cerulean-- I thought of that, but... My parents are a lot more inclined to help pitch in on the "experience" sort of stuff-- going on trips, concerts, things like that. My dad helped my older sister get to Halifax not that long ago to see a Prince concert, and then the summer before last my mom helped pay for my younger sister to go see Radiohead (although she never actually got to see Radiohead after, because while she was in the lineup right outside the doors the stage collapsed, one of the tech guys died and they had to cancel the concert). My parents don't really pitch in money on "childish" things like the costume pieces I tend to go for, whether as a birthday present or not. :P So unfortunately, the parental-donation thing really only works one way in this situation, haha.

So I heard! :D My older sister is OBSESSED with him and she managed to sneak some pictures and videos of him while she was at the concert. She's been to all sorts of shows and she insists Prince is the best performer she's ever seen live!

Apparently he even brought his mom up on stage at one point to dance with him, haha.

@Dan: Oh god, Mertailica! That would actually be pretty awesome!
